Neighborhood: South Melbourne
South Melbourne hosts the city’s oldest continuous market, founded in 1867. Rows of neatly arranged fruit, vegetables and flowers splash yellows, greens and reds along the entire perimeter, where the whole neighborhood gathers for Saturday feasts. Inside the hall, shoppers hover over the mouth-watering displays of delicatessens and specialty food shops. Further in, a bazaar full of giftware, clothing, and kitchen utensils completes the scene. Take a break to walk the wide and shady streets and stroll along the Victorian-era heritage terrace houses. But return to the market in time for some paella, simmering in three large frypans on the footpath and served straight onto your plate.

It’s not just fruit and vege. The French baker here is incredible. Many different food options here from different nationalities ready to eat. Including a Intl bottle shop......

No value
May 2021 • Couples
Market way over priced and not value for money. Meat too expensive, just about all items too expensive, overcrowded and unpleasant atmosphere. I will be shopping in my area from now on.

This market is just lovely. There is something for everyone here. Lots of places to grab a bite to eat, a large food market and a general market area where there is just about anything you can think of. A great place to do the shopping.

Plants, Fresh seafood, fruit and veg. Delicious coffee and so much variety of food cuisines to try. The village juicery was a favourite of mine as well as Gozleme. Not to forget also fresh grilled fish and salad.

lovely market

A really nice market selling lots of lovely fresh produce and fresh flowers, to hand made soaps.
I must admit I have visited The Queen Victoria market as well and slightly favour that one, but this has its own special appeal.

Smaller market with its own charms
Mar 2020 • Family
Part of my itinerary while in Melbourne was to go to the market for fresh seafood - there are two main markets 1) Queen Victoria in the CBD and 2) South Melbourne Market.. and if you read my previous post, it was closed when I went there on Thursday (blamed myself for not doing research on this). This time I was going to make up for it.

Even before I came to Melbourne, I'd asked around on which market to visit... Queen Victoria is definitely larger in size, vibrant and more varieties, but South Melbourne has its own charms and not as packed. That was why I decided for the latter - and we had a good time exploring part of the market after the breakfast in Dead Man Espresso.

While we were there, we bought some handmade artisan soaps, honey and hat. Then we headed to the fresh seafood sections - our objective? To eat the freshest seafood on offer. There were many stalls selling seafood and we chose the one that had more customers.. just to be safe as we did not know which was the best.

Since we had breakfast earlier, we thought that we wouldn't be able to eat a lot but we were wrong - half lobster, sea urchin and one dozen of oysters were nicely placed on the table not long after that. The kids?? Not huge fans of seafood so these were portion for two (2) adults only. Forget the sea urchin unless you know how to clean it like the Japanese. The lobster was good but the oysters took centerstage... Small, succulent, briny and sweet!! So good that we added another half dozen to be eaten with a squeeze of lemon.

Scampi, king crabs, abalone, prawns, fish and others are available at your fancy too... But by then we were stuffed to the max. If traveling a bit far is not your thing, Queen Victoria Market offers similar seafood. For me, South Melbourne Market is small yet not lack of products to offer.

We Uber to Sea Life Melbourne after that where we spent the next 2 hours++ for the kids to enjoy.

South Melbourne is one of my favourite place to visit in Melbourne with great selections of food, cafes, shops and restaurants. You can get everything here from the market. It's highly recommended to visit the market early, plenty of parking.
