Neighborhood: South Melbourne
South Melbourne hosts the city’s oldest continuous market, founded in 1867. Rows of neatly arranged fruit, vegetables and flowers splash yellows, greens and reds along the entire perimeter, where the whole neighborhood gathers for Saturday feasts. Inside the hall, shoppers hover over the mouth-watering displays of delicatessens and specialty food shops. Further in, a bazaar full of giftware, clothing, and kitchen utensils completes the scene. Take a break to walk the wide and shady streets and stroll along the Victorian-era heritage terrace houses. But return to the market in time for some paella, simmering in three large frypans on the footpath and served straight onto your plate.

Loved it here. Very busy and popular but a great vibe. Plenty of food both fresh and cooked on offer so plan to eat. Good coffee. Variety of other stalls from books, to flowers to decent clothing. Well worth spending some time here to watch the stall holders at work, watch people and enjoy the atmosphere.

Very busy market, lots of food outlets, produce and other stalls. Nothing out of.the ordinary from other markets but still a nice atmosphere.

We came here via tram 96.
We first ate the goat curry with rice & pho with duck drumstick @ BABA Vietnamese stall at the corner of the food section. It is by far one of the best food we eaten after Max@ hardware lane.
The goat curry is really tasty n the drumstick is juicy!
We also ate the pistachio almond croissant at Pickadeli which is below my expectation. Long black & cuppacino is ok.
We also bought a set of nice coasters for our friend here.
We find the fruits, seafood, other food items are well displayed, neat & appetising.
Fruits & vegetables all look so fresh, neat & 😋. We bought a freshly squeezed pineapple juice, baked almonds @5.
We may come again tomorrow since its only few stations from our Movenpick hotel. However remember to tap your myki card since South Melbourne Market is out of the free tram zone.

I went in with high hopes and we had to park a distance away, so the expectation had built, but when we got there it was terribly crowded and nothing to write home about. There were some nice clothes and things but everything was so overpriced! Much better markets in Sydney.

My pick of all the Melbourne markets. Get there early! Free rooftop parking for 2 hours. Excellent food, friendly stall owners. Great for a rainy day outing. Not many seats to sit n watch or eat, the only downside. We love visiting!

We stopped off here to grab some snacks for a day trip to Phillip Island. This was a fun, eclectic market. A bit of a different vibe to the Vic Market. You can find clothes, beauty products, flowers, produce, cheese, meat and seafood, pantry staples, baked goods, and other takeaway.
We checked out Mama Tran Dumplings. You pick the dumplings and preparation and they'll finish them on the spot. We also stopped by the Tea Drop. You can buy containers of looseleaf in brightly colored containers great for gifting or taking home. For snacks we got mixed nuts from Delinuts, croissants from Pieno di Grazia, and fresh fruit from Rod's. With more time, a tarot reading at the Cupboard Under the Stairs would've been fun! And we would have browsed the Merchant of Fairness bookshop.

This was my first visit to South Melbourne market. As compared to Queen Vic Market that more tourists are familiar with, South Melbourne market is the market that many locals visit - I could see many of them bringing their dogs for walk and stopped by to grab a cup of coffee while others pushed their marketing trolley for their weekend marketing.
There are many many kinds of things that one can find here - food, drinks, deli, homeware, clothes and even books!
My family and I had a great time exploring the market and tried quite a number of good food and coffee.

Diverse range of stalls with fresh Australian produce and imported deli ingredients from around the world. Fabulous quality so of course not cheap food but good food. Everyone is super friendly. Able to stuff our faces with treats that we can't get back home. 2 hours free parking on the roof. Not liking this market is a 1st world problem. Only thing I would say is that stall owners need to move away from plastic packaging, there's way way too much plastic.

Such a great place to try all kinds of food. They also had a section for other things too. Was clean and fun. More seating would have made it better. Be sure to come earlier as we got there a bit too late around 2 or 3 so was abit rushed. They close early.

You cannot take dogs inside market , however you can visit numerous shops on outer rim with a dog
Some owners tie up dog outside and go inside
This may not be advisable on a busy day especially if hot

Hi, would anyone be so kind to enlighten me the difference between South Melbourne market vs Queen Victoria market? In terms of product offering and price, which is better ? (as I may only have time to visit one)
Also, does the free tram bring me near South Melbourne market?

My wife and I prefer the South Melbourne Market. It is more compact hence easy to get around. There are less clothing shops than at the Vic Market, but a sufficient choice for us. Equally, the food stores especially the delis, in my opinion, offer a better range - where else do you find Matjes Herrings these days, ot Swiss Roesti, or other specialities in one shop? Or a separate little chamber for these tasty French cheeses for the special occasions? Slurp your fresh oysters right there at the stalls (all is missing is a glass of champagne with it !), before heading to the second-hand book store (I haven't seen one at the Vic). Good news for motorists: parking is free the first two hours, but I believe the area is not accessible by the free red tram. But let me not discourage you from visiting the Vic: I believe there are the best food bargains to be had before closing time.
