Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

- Gael H13 contributionsState Library is not what you might expectWhatever millions were spent revamping this old stone Duchess of a building, it’s been recouped in spades. In every room, at all levels, crowds are involved with reading, looking, learning, playing. The main hall dome, filling the huge space with natural light, has everyone taking its photo. The children’s space is enchanting. 2 chess games at the entrance had parents teaching youngsters how to play. The current “Illuminated” exhibition until 4 April, shows written Hebrew books from over 1000 years ago, on loan from the British Library as well as local artifacts. It’s an amazing collection, with interesting sound track backing. And everything is free.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 4, 2024

- An1ta069Melbourne, Australia238 contributionsHistorical State Library in MelbourneOne of our bucket list places to see, the State Library is an amazing historical Melbourne building housing some amazing exhibitions. Currently running Melbourne Out Loud, the works of Australian photographer Rennie Ellis, take the time to visit. so many things to see and experience, hard to believe this is where the Melbourne Museum was housed before moving to its current location. Such beautiful architecture, when in Melbourne it is a must see. The historic reading room is amazing, and take the time to go up to the top of the dome to look down and reading about the restoration of the dome. I have lived in Melbourne my entire life and hadn't visited the State Library, please take the time to see this truly incredible landmark.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 6, 2024

There is a classy formal area that's obviously the main attraction and original area and there is also the modern study space available too. This building and its contents are truly amazing! I was so impressed with the design and architecture and the fact that visitors were made to feel welcome. The book section was so comprehensive that I could have spent hours there. This is so much more than a library! At first we had gone inside to escape the intense heat outside but once inside we realised that we had hit upon a real gem and stayed for 2.5 hours. There is a lovely café with great food and friendly service. Highly recommended!

Allow plenty of time here, there is so much to see and do. There is a great collection of art work some very old, Ned Kelly's armour is there! The libary building itself is so interesting you will find yourself investigating so many different levels and rooms.
The main reading room, with its high vaulted ceiling is awesome, and well worth the climb to the top level.
You can go and sit at the reading desks, I found one dedicated to Dame Nelly Melba!!
They also have a gift shop and a great little cafe, which serves lovely coffee and light food. My whole family loved this visit.

Behind the statue of Sir Redmond Barry, the mastermind behind the creation of this libray, is a neoclassical portico with Corinthian columns. dating from the beginnings in the 1850's. After entering one comes to several reading rooms like the 'Newspapers Reading Room', or Arts Collection, Heritage Collections, Genealogy, Chess or the Redmond Barry Reading Room, mostly built in later stages.
Most spectacular is the 35m high, octagonal La Trobe Reading Room with a wide concrete and glass dome from 1913. The whole construction is best seen from level 6, while on the two levels underneath it are interesting exhibitions. On level 4 the collection 'World of Books', on level 5 an exhibition about 'The Changing Face of Victoria^' with many old books, but also artefacts from Ned Kelly, who got his death sentence from the founder of this library, who mainly worked as a judge: Sir Redmond Barry.

Lovely building. Free entry. A quiet escape in Melbourne CBD. Wonderful exhibition spaces with historical, cultural, social and educational displays. The painting gallery was well worth seeing and the displays of books under various themes are set up on several levels in The Dome. Historical natural history books and atlases to pulp fiction and children's education displays. The place exudes heritage. Enjoy.

The State Library of Victoria (SLV) contains the collective memory of the State of Victoria. In front of the SLV stands a statue of the founder of the SLV, Sir Redmond Barry. The SLV has recently been undergoing renovations, which will bring it into the 21st Century.. Some of the SLV's treasures, like the Rare Books Collection, reward inspection by scholars researching the State's history,. First editions of books such as Frank Hardy's Power Without Glory are irreplaceable.

The official tour of the State Library of Victoria is worth doing if you have some free time. The tour is completely free, as it is offered as a public service. For context, the library itself is located in the heart of downtown Melbourne, and is accessible by about 1,000 light rail routes that stop directly in front of it. The tour provides an interesting mix of history, architecture & design, features, books, and art contained in the building. The architecture & design element covers different facets of the library including murals, staircases, windows, and desks – all of which have interesting stories behind them. The tour also covers the small-ish art museum located in one of the newer wings of the library complex. Interestingly, the library contains the homemade armor of the legendary outlaw Ned Kelly, which forms the centerpiece of a small exhibition about him. The tour also covers the archives & records wing of the library, which is the official repository of state records such as newspapers, magazines, and other official documents, and which is experiencing a surge of genealogical and family history interest. We definitely enjoyed this tour!

Sir Redmond Barry (1813-1880), a prominent colonial-era jurist, was instrumental in founding the State Library of Victoria, which became one of Melbourne's great civic institutions. Anyone can visit the SLV to read, research or just look around. Following the SLV's refurbishment, there's also a children's play area. The SLV is a repository of the history of Victoria, including many fine paintings. Entry is gratis.

The State Library Victoria building dates back to the mid-19th century. It is an architecturally beautiful building and the library is one of the most popular and busiest around. We did not get the chance to go inside but hope to do so in a future visit.
