Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

This art gallery unfortunately was closed and not just because of corona but because of lack of funding and eminent ex politician Barry Jones AC makes a passionate please for people to give funds. It looks like it has been closed for much longer than the corona period. It is not for profit theatre and art gallery and as the name suggests it is downstairs in a brick 1800s building. It show cased independent visual art, theatre and music. Hopefully it should be up and running soon. In the same building is also Arc One Gallery at the back of the ground floor which seems to be not so dire straights of funds.

Came here in July 2017.

I booked a weekend to Melbourne and was looking for things to do and stumble upon this place. Booked a ticket to see a theatre show.

when i arrived i went down many flights of stairs and realised they also have art exhibition, but i ran out of time. Hopefully will go back next time :)

the whole place is really cool. i think its a converted warehouse?
the show was a bit out there tbh. some kinda gothic alternative theatrical performance with singing, talking, costume, live music, eeerie mist, nudity… Its not something i see all the time so its fairly interesting.

they serve drinks in a bar at the back

seats are reserved too with usher and you seat around the stage, the stage is like a catwalk.. so you can see well no matter where you seat. i paid $25 which i thought was reasonable.

Overall - interesting experience if you're curious with modern art

This is a venue for progressive visual arts, music and theatre performance. It is independent and not-for-profit, so pretty unusual and special. Theatre shows are usually on in the evenings, starting at 7.30 or 8pm, and on Sundays at 5pm; check and book in advance if possible. Art exhibitions are generally open Tues-Fri 11am-5pm and Saturday 12-4pm; but check ahead. Music events: various times.
You'll find fortyfivedownstairs at the east end of Flinders Lane, between Spring and Exhibition streets. The building is old, high-ceilinged, industrial-warehouse style with board floors, painted brick walls. The stairs down to the venue are old too. Phone ahead to ask for disabled access.
I visited to attend the openings of two art exhibitions.

This is a brilliant little boutique venue that attracts some great independent theatre and art exhibitions. The theatre space is craftily located in the basement down several flights of stairs giving an edgy, alternative vibe as you literally head underground into an intimate space where anything may await you. I saw Tony Kushner’s ‘Angels in America’ and the venue helped give the illusion you’d moved downstairs into another world. There are bar facilities in the downstairs area and a flashy restaurant upstairs at the main Flinders Lane entrance. Fortyfivedownstairs is a great staple in the Melbourne arts scene landscape. You should have no problem catching an event as there is usually always something on (independent theatre, music, or visual art exhibition).

If Art is your thing make sure you take a visit to this place. You have to go down some stairs and it's not very well signposted. The staff are uber friendly and the exhibition I saw was excellent. Well worth a look. And it's a whole complex that is community funded. A little hidden gem in Melbourne.
