Gangsters & Candy Stores (night tour with laser projector)

Utilising the latest in handheld laser projection technology, writer and historian Michael Shelford, beams images of notorious characters from the 1890's to the 1930's onto the buildings and streets they once inhabited. Take a walk through downtown Melbourne and learn of an era in which there was much more on offer at the local candy store than just sweets and soft drinks. Explore Melbourne’s underworld c.1870’s to 1930’s, an era in which Melbourne’s downtown slum district, ‘Little Lon’, was mostly run by women. Learn about the battle for supremacy, madams who stood their ground against well-known gangsters such as Squizzy Taylor, and an all-female crime syndicate known as ‘The Combine’. Stop outside buildings which were once brothels and sly grog shops (speak easies), and hear the stories of what occurred within their walls and on the streets and laneways around them.

Shootings, bombings, bashings, brothels, robberies, opium, cocaine and sly grog (speak easies).

A very informative and entertaining tour .... will certainly look at Fitzroy in a different light after Michael’s excellent commentary on the crime in Fitzroy from the 1890’s to the 1930’s. Michael’s knowledge is extensive and this combined with a well planned walk and a brochure of photos of the crime figures of the day was both interesting and an excellent way of spending a Sunday afternoon. Additionally, Michael was very helpful in answering questions as he has researched extensively this era and is passionate about historical crime in this area. Thanks Michael for a good afternoon last Sunday .... would thoroughly recommend the tour to others. And a postscript; as last Sunday’s weather was meant to be very inclement, Michael informed us via email the day before offering us the option of cancelling - we are pleased we did not do so as we would have missed an excellent walking tour!

An insight into the underbelly of the crime gangs and goings on around the turn of the century. Michael gave an interesting narrative into what life was like on the streets of Fitzroy at that time. Fascinating characters and a great history of the people, times, and place and how it all evolved into the suburb of today. If you are a history or crime buff, this is the tour for you. Well done.
