The barracks have some excellent historic rooms and a museum.

Unfortunately, the Defence Department no longer open them to ordinary visitors.

You need to be part of a special tour; no advice was offered on how one might be arranged.

Very disappointing

Victoria Barracks is still a working establishment for the Australian Defence Force. Unfortunately it is not open to the public, which is such a shame. There is so much history in this place. The War Cabinet Room and Annex is where the allied effort in the Pacific during WW2 was planned. Still a few gems to see from the outside along St Kilda Road.

This beautiful bluestone building in St. Kilda Road is opposite expansive parkland and the Shrine of Remembrance. Unsurprisingly it is not possible to enter the barracks. During the Second World war Australia's War Cabinet Rooms were here.
Interestingly in some parts of Australia supporting a football team is often called 'barracking' for the team. It is said that in early Melbourne football was played in this area and the public watched from in front of these barracks, hence the term 'barracking'.

Some Melbournites are unaware of this gem just across the road from The Shrine of Remembrance.

Many couples love to have wedding photos taken out the front on St Kilda Rd as it is quite beautiful, only to find they are quickly moved along by security as it is a secure Commonwealth site. It is possible to get permission to take wedding pictures etc but must be applied for in advance. See the security guards at the gate for more info.

The Barracks sit on St Kilda Road just south of the National Gallery and were built in the 19th century to house the troops involved in putting down the Eureka Stockade rebellion and has been used by the Defence Department until today. Although entry is not possible it is worthwhile visiting just for the old architecture.
