Salamanca market is the place to be on a Saturday. The crowds are incredible. Very difficult to manoeuvre your way through and difficult to see any stall in great detail. There are some shops around the Arts Centre area and these are best to be seen any day but market day.

This is a valid alternative to Salamanca Market the other days of the week when the market it's closed.
We visited some boutiques and there are some original products. So it's a good experience have a look and see some artisanal products in some shops.
The prices are quite high anyway.

Great to see the artists in some instances. Some very good pieces/shops/galleries.
But go on a Saturday and do the Salamanca market too, and as a combo a great experience. My time suggestion is enough for both. Added on time for snack lunch too.

Fantastic collection of fine arts and crafts that are really top end and handmade. Rare and unique woods such as sassafras made into jewel boxes are precision pieces and well worth the money. Art shops a plenty. One-off jewellery is common and other trinket shops abound. Some very good restaurants in the area with the Rockwall Bar and Grill and the Blue Eye Restaurant being some of the best. Plenty of cheaper eatery's, cafes and coffee shops for the budget minded. Spent 2 days looking. This is all within the ambiance of colonial buildings which have be lovingly preserved. This is a must see

The address of 77 Salamanca Place Hobart Tasmania includes performance artistic venues as well as craft shops. These are not "Made in China" mass-produced craft products, but the expression of local crafts people who are passionate about their originality, in using locally grown timbers and fibres and producing exquisitely crafted unique jewellery items.

Travellers are well advised to allow plenty of time to visit and meander through the many little shops in alcoves that comprise the street address 77 Salamanca Place while absorbing the ambience and high quality craft offerings.

One little shop in these alcoves is "The Spindle Tree", an outlet for the Designer Crafts Co-operative Society Limited (from their business card). As the name implies this shop offers all kinds of wool and mohair fibres. Most is hand-spun and hand-dyed. Finished items in the shop include soft toys, but my choices on 2 visits this year have been the skeins of hand-dyed mohair. Costing about $25 for 100 grams, this is enough wool (mohair) to knit a nice scarf on bulky needles - A fashion statement in warm autumn orange-brown dyes or in racy lolly pink, to set off a lady's winter clothes.

Other shops nearby and facing Salamanca Place are in these unique and old 19th Century Ships' Chandlers buildings. Some offer beautifully crafted wooden souvenirs starting at about $10 for a Huon pine drink coaster through to $2000 for a individually crafted coffee table made of Huon pine (become rarer each year) or Celery Top pine or other Tasmanian timbers.

Recommended area for all tourists and visitors coming by air or by the frequent cruise ships calling at Hobart and docking close by, about 150 metres from these clusters of craft and art shops along Salamanca Place.

Spread over several buildings with a small theatre in the middle, the centre embodies the character of Hobart- laid back, informal and friendly. Everybody says hello and smiles- a great place to spend time.

Visited here on Market day which was excellent timing. Much to look at and have a relaxing time. We walked from accommodation which was only 10 minutes away.

Salamanca Arts Centre oozes in Australian History. Formally old warehouses , later created into the cultural hub of Tasmania. There are numerous Art Galleries, craft shops, exhibitions, music and theatre performances.
