About
The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

I’ve been wanting to visit Theatre Royal for the longest time, and today I attended a 2pm play. There is a large new entrance, so there are no lines or crowds and everything is COVIDSafe. The theatre is small but charming. In future I would not purchase tickets in the front (row B) as it was a little too close to the stage.

We really enjoyed our tour of the Theatre Royal. The development is a most interesting blend of new and old. Hobart is so lucky to have kept the old theatre and its history intact. Our tour guide Kathy was enthusiastic and informative....she took us to all the nooks and crannies that, as a theatre goer, you would normally never get to see...she was also generous with her time and didn't rush.

Had a wonderful tour of the theatre, old and new; the stalls, stage, backstage, dressing rooms, old dressing rooms below the stage (including the one used by Laurence Olivier & Vivian Leigh - much in need of restoration.
I was also taken into the new studion space, then back to the gallery and circle of the old. For a former Drama teacher this was GOLD.

We have given this place a shot a couple of times, as we usually really enjoy going to the theatre.
But we aren’t going to throw good money after bad. We won’t be back.
It’s a dreadful little theatre with a tiny stage, super cramped, basic and in need of repairs. And the productions were so average ..... obviously anything of quality agrees with us - i.e.. best avoided.
And quite frankly, the theatre goers surrounding us leaved a lot to be desired as far as common theatre etiquette. NEVER AGAIN!

No more waiting outside, plenty of room inside to wait for people, with a large area for ticketing, bar and cloak room now added. Been to see a few things recently- ballet, live music and comedy, all were good, temperature within the theatre was excellent and staff helpful.

The theatre royal is the oldest theatre in Australia, it is absolutely stunning with all the old period features and beautiful chandeliers. The only thing if you are going to see a show some of the seats in the upper stalls have restricted views and the wooden seats get a bit uncomfortable.

Fantastic theatre, amazing decor. I prefer the dress circle front row if I can get it. If not go the third row (it has a better view than the 2nd row).

Over the years I and my wife have attended many events at this wonderful historic theatre which is located in the midst of Hobart. The seating arrangements are a little quaint - from a previous century and whether from the stalls to the "gods" the views are excellent as indeed are the acoustics - there is the odd seat that sits neatly behind a pole! To be there is an experience worth the price of admission.

It is without doubt the most intimate, charming and well preserved theatre anywhere in Australia. A "must see" when you are in Hobart. It's exciting to realise that this lovely old theatre has been kept in such a beautiful state. Even if you are not a regular theatre patron you will be surprised and thankful that this wonderful gem has reinstated to it's former glory. Highly recommended.

Hi, were there any British actresses performing in this theatre in the 1940s? I'm an author, living in Australia, but writng mostly in Czech. I need to know before I use it in the plot of the novel I'm writing. It's a fiction, but partly based on history, so I want it to be reasonably accurate.
Thank you very much!

Yes, as you can see from the previous comment, we are very proud that Vivien Leigh performed here in 'The School for Scandal' with the Old Vic Company in 1948.

Hi there,
We are booked Friday night to go to the ballet on a short trip to Tassie, can anyone recommend a good place to eat beforehand nearby?
Cheers
