About
This true replica of the historic huts in Cape Denison - Antarctica - constructed in 1911 by the men of the Australian Antarctic Expedition, led by Dr Douglas Mawson. Constructed by heritage architects and builders, the replica was only made possible by a federal government grant and the generosity of many Tasmanian businesses and individuals who donated time, goods and goodwill. As a part of the Mawson's Huts Foundation, all profits are toward the conservation of the historic huts, located in Cape Denison, Antarctica. Run by staff and volunteers, it is a step back in time to the "Heroic age" of Antarctic exploration and gives you a fascinating insight into the life of these Antarctic pioneers. The museum is well set up for groups as well as individual visits. Private tours are available on request. We also have a wonderful gift shop with unique items. We look forward to welcoming you. ** Please note due to current COVID restrictions our opening hours may have changed **

Great visit! The staff & volunteers here were fantastic! Had a wonderful Pre-talk before going in, all the way down to the wood used to build the hut and why and interesting facts on the boat and what they took down to Antartica, amazing bit of history and such a great replica, makes you want to visit the real thing.Thank you to the staff/volunteers for sharing their passion and knowledge on the hut!

Replica hut gives great insights into the privations of Antartica

Good explanation of the trips made by Mawson (and crew) to Antartica - the museum is fairly small put packs in a lot of information.

Set aside no more then 45 -60 mins to see everything, but well worth the visit as it all helps to support the restoration of the actual hut in Antarctica.

A nice tribute to Mawson and his team

Great small museum to learn more about D Mawson and his team who set the hut up in antartica. We even met someone visiting who had actually been to the hut to help with it's conservation in Antartica in the last 15 years. It was all really interesting. Well worth a visit.

A must do!

Another gem located near the docks, the Mawson's Hut Replica is a great little museum. Its easy to forget Australia's connection to the Antarctic & this is a very authentic replica of the 1911 expedition hut. The brutality of the climate was extraordinary, its no wonder so many lost their lives and to stand in a room and contemplate how so many men lived in that space is extraordinary. Tasmania seems to use a lot of knowledgeable volunteers and this little museum is no different and its worth having a chat and hearing the stories.

A friend recommended this to us, and we are so glad we hunted it down to visit. A fantastic replica of Mawson’s team’s 1911 hut and a fascinating insight into the scientific team’s trip. Really really well done. A highlight was the knowledgeable and incredibly interesting information given by two enthusiastic volunteers who “work” in the museum. They really brought it all alive.

When you are visiting Salamanca Place or

Well worth a visit

Worthwhile and very interesting, but make sure you take the time to read the information posters and watch the videos and talk with wonderful volunteer guides. It’s not a rush through exhibit. If you do you won’t understand the enormity of the expeditions and the associated history . We loved the bio’s of all the members and the detailed diaries of each days happenings.
Great books available to purchase.

History brought to life
Mar 2021
The Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum is well worth a visit if you are in the Constitution Dock area. The experience of being inside the hut makes tangible the experience of expedition leader Douglas Mawson, photographer Frank Hurley, and 16 other men, some of whom who spent two winters in such a shelter in Antarctica. Look at the artefacts, read the history and ponder about human resilience.

History of the Antarctic
Apr 2020
A very interesting and well-presented museum telling the story of the Antarctic and Mawson, with demonstration sleeping quarters and kitchen, and various artifacts and tales of the explorers and their trials and personal stories. Very interesting, very informative.
