Located in North Hobart, the State is a local independent cinema that has entertained generations of Tasmanians for over 100 years. In addition to eight cinema screens, we also have a boutique bookstore, cafe bar and rooftop cinema. Our cinema is licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying a movie!

I am a regular at The State and love the atmosphere of the theatres and the café, but sad to say the customer service is severely lacking in courtesy and friendliness with sour faced young women finding it hard to smile or say hello either when selling tickets at the front or selling coffee in the café. If you work... More

Boutique, thoughtful cinema, comfortable seating and eclectic film selection. Makes cinema a very enjoyable experience and the bookshop is a great bonus - it should be bigger.

The cinema cafe is a trendy spot, classy and a great spot to meet friends and enjoy a coffee or light meal! Getting a park not so easy! Coffee was perfect! Staff friendly!

State Cinema in North Hobart serves delicious meals and a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. I chose a meal of shepherds pie with a home-made relish and this was a substantial mid-day meal of moderate cost. The apple cider was from a maker in the Huon Valley. Needing an early lunch due to flight times, we were able... More

I really love that the state cinema is thriving after a re-vamp, that there is access to alternative movies where you can enjoy a glass of wine and even a platter or meal before or after your film. However I would avoid seeing a film in the 'screening room' which is essentially a glass box with the restaurant to one... More

We went to this cinema to see a family movie. The setting is beautiful, staff friendly and helpful and the cinema was lovely. Not a cheap night at the movies but worth a visit. Highly recommended.

I so love the State Cinema and am a regular ... the cinema's are quaint and cosy, the cafe has great food and there are nooks and crannies to have private conversations in. Always a great night out!

Caught an entertaining Italian comedy in the very cosy cinema 8. Probably only holds 20 or so people, but great ambience and comfort on the two seater lounges. Was able to purchase a glass of wine from the bar and take into the movie with me which added to the relaxed and welcoming vibe. Lots of good restaurants only a... More
