The foundation of St Francis Xavier was laid in 1856, construction went on for many years, the massive tower remained incomplete until 1996. The Cathedral is huge, it will absorb a large congregation, in which the Jesuit Order participates. The Cathedral is very attractive internally, it's worth exploring this Cathedral, it's not far from the city of Adelaide. It is a notable feature of the progressive Catholic Church.

St Francis Xavier was a founding member of the Society of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits.. He is regarded ass being the Apostle to the East. He is also a Patron Saint of Australia. This magnificent church is a fitting memorial to a man of great faith. It took years to build the cathedral, but it was worth it.

A calming place. The interior is filled with dark amber light in the mornings and afternoons/evenings. Walk down to Our Lady's alter and look back at the bell-ringers' chamber - the bell ringers can be seen through a large glass window. The Cathedral is very close to the Adelaide Central Market - an Adelaide must - but not open every day. The nearby architecture in Victoria Square is wonderful and challenging.

We've been to a couple of functions at this church now and it is truly grand. Magnificent architecture throughout the inside AND outside makes it well worth a visit if you like old churches. Good competition for St Peters!

We go to mass at St. Xavier for each of the big holidays (Easter, Christmas, etc.) and love the big church feeling that it has. The only drawback is that occasionally tourists will walk in during a service and take pictures.

Look for the bronze statue of Mary McKillop with children outside the cathedral on Victoria Square side. Very touching, beautifully created.

This is the central Adelaide Catholic Church and as most churches, very beautiful. The side garden has a lovely bronze statue of Mother Mary McKillop now Saint Mary holding hands with small children. It is a lovely piece of art.

I was married in this Cathedral, so there is sentimental feelings for it, however since the bell tower was finished some some years ago, it now dominates the Square and is a worthy center piece for Adelaide.
