Not to be missed!

Even better than our visit in 2013. Two typical homes of the 19th century: a cottage and a substantial Queenslander. Furniture typical of the period is attractively displayed and guides are excellent. Also have info for kids.
Thanks Bruce for the interesting and informative tour of the houses.

Excellent Way to viewhistoric Townsville

Very friendly staff, ended up getting a personalised tour through the houses by on of the very knowledgeable volunteers. Two of the three houses on display were open to view and were well laid out in period furnishings. Beautiful grounds also.

Beautiful homes with so much history, and well kept gardens. Fascinating place tucked away so close to the city

A treasure!

This is a wonderful place to visit. The main house is a stunning piece of colonial Queensland architecture and most of the rooms are set up authentically with a few real treasures amongst them. The miner's cottage gives a good contrast and shows the ingenuity of these early pioneers. A shame the National Trust doesn't put some real dollars into preservation and presentation. A little bit hard to find but worth the effort.

Surprise gem
Jun 2016 • Couples
I love old houses, especially ones that have been restored to reflect the period. My husband not so inclined, but he was happy enough to come along for little history of life in FNQ in the late 1800's.

We were greeted at the door by 3 lovely, shall we say, elderly gentlemen. We payed our $8 each, and thought we would be just left to wander through. No, this lovely man, who I now regret not getting his name, gave us a full historical tour of the 2 houses, it's owners and the years until where they are located today.

This lovely man's knowledge of the era, the history of the house and the families who lived there was amazing.

I don't even know how long we spent there. The time passed as quickly as the years, but it was well worth the visit. And as for my husband, even he enjoyed the experience.

A great insight into historical North Queensland
Sep 2015 • Solo
The two historic houses are beautifully preserved. A great insight into the North Queensland of times past. The guide was very friendly and interesting.

St Marys church which adjoins the properties is also a beauty worth a photo or a look if open.

The War Memorial arch at the school across the road is also worth a look, it was the first war memorial in Townsville

A lovely trip back to the past

A delightful insight into the history of Townsville. Bruce gave us a very informative guided tour of 'Currajong', it's history and the owners. It made such a difference having someone explain the history so you have a clearer understanding, instead of just looking at photos and artifacts. For anyone who loves history, this is a must. A lot of love and hard work has been put into relocating and recreating this beautiful building. Well worth the entry fee. Thanks Bruce for the history lesson.

Great tour from excellent tour guide of two very different 19th century homes. Houses are furnished with items from the 19th century which have come from the Townsville area. A rare treat and not to be missed. Easy to reach by public transport.

See a few historical buildings in one visit
The Heritage Centre is actually three buildings which have been transported to the site. Guided tours are offered and whilst we only visited twop of the buildings they afforded an opportunity to see early Townsville life through the eyes of a middle class family and a poorer mining family.

The buildings are very well maintained, with lovely gardens. theyt contain many interesting artifacts and the guides are a wealth of knowledge.

Finding the heritage centre can be difficult and I wouldn't say its a place you could walk to in the Townsville heat. Not a place to take young children. Don't forget to walk to the north of Castling Street and see St Mary's church
