Just metres short of a mountain, Castle Hill is the giant pink granite monolith that stands proud in the centre of Townsville - a perfect place for visitors to orientate themselves. As well as offering vehicle access, Castle Hill provides a number of popular walking tracks, which are frequented by more than 2,500 locals a day! The 360-degree views of Townsville at the top are well worth the journey. Be sure to have a camera on hand, particularly for sunrise or sunset as these are photo opportunities which shouldn't be missed. As well as offering an iconic centre piece for the city and spectacular scenic views, Castle Hill has a significant history. The Hill's vantage was used by visiting American soldiers during World War II. According to local legend, the visitors famously offered to demolish the hill and use the rock to build a bridge to Magnetic Island. A World War II observation bunker sits on one corner of the Hill reminding visitors of Castle Hill's military history. Castle Hill facilities include car parking, public amenities, drink fountains and shaded seating to enjoy while taking in some of the best views of the city and across to Magnetic Island.

Always loved going up the hill and taking in the surrounds of Townsville. Can't wait to visit again so I can walk up again.

This is a steep road but well sealed for cars and just wide enough for two to pass comfortably. Need to be fit if you want to walk it, but either way, the views are fantastic with 360 degrees vistas all around Townsville and out...More

We were advised to visit Castle Hill at night and im glad we did. The drive up was a little perilous due to pedestrians ( we couldn't see them die to lack of lights). Once at the top the view was spectacular. Townsville all lit...More

Chose the goat track. This track is currently being upgraded but still accessible. I would suggest an early start especially if not used to the climate. Runners are ok no requirement for any rugged footwear. Water and toilets available at the top. Many tracks to...More

My partner and I visited in September and the weather was perfect for a walk up the cudtheringa (goat) track. We went mid morning and it was excellent. The views are so beautiful.

Windy drive up the hill (dont walk unless you are an Olympian) but well worth it for the multiple lookouts.

Quite a steep drive to the top but surprising, quite a lot of people were talking up for exercise. Plenty of parking space at the top. Several lookout spots give good views over the city and surrounds
