The military museum is very close to the Archer Rail museum and is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm. It is staffed by wonderful volunteers and is an incredible experience from sitting in a small boat to listen and view the story of a Gallipoli veteran who was sent back following injury and his subsequent short life to excellent displays from all of Australia's involvement in various battlefronts. Very well set out with a variety of different information: Uniforms, facts and figures. dioramas, communication set ups, trench cutaway etc. Spent an hour there and probably could have spent longer. Used to be 42 Battalion training grounds where my husband's father had been based before being sent to Africa where he was a former Rat of Tobruk. Reasonable entry price with discount for seniors.

Staffed by friendly volunteers. We had a lady volunteer who was passionate about the displays, explaining the layout and what to see. She was very informative, especially about the origin of the emu plume in the slouch hat. Museum has heaps of information about the Australian War times. Well worth a visit and browse for at least a couple of hours.

We like to support these local museums, particularly when staffed by volunteers, however have mixed feelings about our visit last week. There were a number of older gentlemen there who made us feel as if we were intruding on a get-together, not returning our greetings and turning their backs on us when we walked in. Thank goodness for the friendly, bubbly lady who took our entry payment and explained the layout of the museum, she was worth her weight in gold and made up for the awkward start. The museum holds a wealth of information but we found it all a little disjointed. I particularly liked the stories of individuals from the area although these were scattered throughout various rooms and not easy to locate. The displays are a little tired and could do with some new labels. I also found it disconcerting, when in the Ladies, to hear a conversation at a table setting just outside the window, about why the local Masonic Lodge had gone into receivership, including names and monetary amounts. I'd suggest that this setting be moved further along the verandah. Overall, we did think it well worth the visit and time spent, with a little more tlc required.
