The Cairns Museum tells the story of Cairns, right in the heart of the city. Housed in the award-winning School of Arts building, the Museum reopened in 2017 after a major renovation. The Cairns Museum now contains five galleries that showcase the history of Cairns, including Aboriginal Traditional Owners, sugar cane history, WW II, tourism development, local architecture and cyclones, as well as the inside story of living in the tropics - amongst crocs, toads, jellyfish and snakes! Our friendly local guides are on hand to assist and give you genuine advice on what to see and do in Cairns.

Museum closed for reno. Went to library to see old photos which they had in many old travel books/brochures available to handle in reference area. Helpful lass in Reference, lovely old building. Good alternative for history buffs whilst museum closed.

Currently being renovated and is not open, except their library services (in another location). By the look of things, that is an optimistic date.

Not originally planned on the to do list but glad we made the effort, full of local history which gave a great insite into the area, hardships and achievements. It contained many unusual items from the past. Worth spending an hour or so here.
