The museum is currently being refurbished and re-opens in 2017 with new displays but the collections are still available for research. The society has one of the most extensive photographic collections of any regional museum/ historical society. The range of other documentary material is also impressive for local history buffs. Volunteers do an incredible job at helping gather material.

Super engaging historical stories, the script was interesting too - my favourite part though were the animation and movies. Something for visual learners. Thumbs up.

We were walking past the interesting old building but noticed that it's completely empty. There was no sign of where all the displays went or if they were coming back. I hope they recreate the museum someday.

The Cairns Museum is currently closed for renovation and we are working as hard as we can to get it back and running. The new museum will definitely be reopening and we hope we can share it with you when you come back to Cairns! We will advise the Trip Advisor community of our opening date as soon as we... More

The Museum has a very fine collection of histori photos of Cairns and the way it developed in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Visiting it was a nostalgic trip for me as there were photos of Cairns in the early 1960s. My first visit was in 1962. There are many displays devoted to the timber and other industries, its port... I had nothing to do so I decided to do a bit of a cultural experience. It was really reasonably priced and I loved the exhibits. The only down side I would have to say was that it was pretty small. I could've walked around it all day long if there were more to see. There was also a questionable... More

Went along as a chaperone with a primary school group thinking this will be boring. Pleasantly surprised. This little hidden gem is well worth a visit and learn all about the regions history!

The Historical Society Museum is a great place to find out the history of Cairns and the surrounding areas. They have a vast number of artifacts on display and a research library covering all aspects of historical Cairns. The staff are all volunteers and have a great deal of knowledge which they love to impart. Unfortunately only the research section... More

It was a little warm in here but good information and the staff was helpful. If it was a little cooler I would have surely stayed longer.

If you would like a really authentic museum experience this is where you will get it! The tour guides are as old as the exhibits and brimming with actual knowledge and experience of the pieces they love to educate about. Volunteer run, they are there for the love of it and if you are not in a rush to 'tick... More
