The Savannahlander is a unique train journey that starts from Cairns, Australia. Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. There are side visits to the Chillagoe caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes available.

We really enjoyed our four-day excursion into the Queensland Outback on the Savannahlander. First and foremost of course is the train itself, a rattling rocking old beast which makes the journey a whole lot of fun . Our drivers, Lee and Will, were of course highly skilled and knowledgeable about the places and wildlife we saw, but all with the... More

you do a day/overnight trip. The issue is not the capacity of the train, but the capacity of the accommodation in the little outback towns it visits. So if you are hoping to do the full four day round trip from Cairns booked well ahead (talking months here). So if your time and money is limited and you are keen... More

First let me say that we really enjoyed our trip on the train though we would have liked to have had more time at Chillagoe & Cobbold Gorge but this could have been down to the trouble with the train, arriving late, leaving early. We started our trip from Cairns Station at 6.30 am and were greeted by both Leigh... More

What a great way to spend 4 fun filled days travelling on the Savannahlander. Wil & Anthony kept us entertained from the moment we left Cairns until we returned 4 days later. And the side trips should not be missed. This trip should be on everyone's must do list.

We did this trip taking the Outback Odyssey starting on 22 June. If you want a relaxing four days moving through the Outback in the way trains used to be, this is the trip. Starting early from Cairns you move up through the McAlastair Range to Kuranda in the early morning light, well before most tourists are up – definitely... More

Having always wanted to ride this Railcar since seeing it several years ago, we were back in Cairns early May and found that although the 4 day trip didn't match our travel dates we could ride on a Wednesday morning to Mareeba. This was delightful and the early morning air was lovely. For around $66 each we rode up at... More

From the very start to the very end this train journey was excellent. The drivers Will and Leigh are passionate about their jobs. They have so much knowledge. They are very friendly and helpful. It was such a privilege to travel with them. The train was very comfortable and all the accommodation was very good. The guides for the Chillagoe... More

A fabulous way to experience the outback. Will, and Anthony were thoroughly knowledgeable in all aspects of the journey. Will's stories are guaranteed to inform and entertain you throughout. The leisurely pace allows frequent halts at anything of interest, and the journey is the destination on this character train. Passengers can take turns sitting in the front seat for the... More

This 4 day trip has been on my “to do” list for some time. The time finally came. The entire experience is quintessentially Australian in every respect. From the variety of the environments; rainforest to dry savannah with variations; the country hospitality along the way; to the varied wonders nature has provided; and the railway equipment used. Even the language... More
