The Savannahlander is a unique train journey that starts from Cairns, Australia. Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. There are side visits to the Chillagoe caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes available.

Words scarcely describe the great experience we had on the Savannahlander in early November 2016 The ever changing scenery from coastal rainforest to open farm country then wild granite gorges and again to more open country is simply awesome To a self confessed train nut, the track the Savannahlander runs on is something special For any one with even a... We commenced our rail trip at Forsayth with morning tea at Café Bloodwood, lunch at the Einasleigh Hotel before travelling to Mt Surprise for an overnight stop staying at the Pioneer huts Undara Lava Tubes. You see a variety of scenery from the outback countryside to the rainforest. The drivers of the rail motor Will & Leigh provide plenty of... More

I took this train from Cairns travelling in an old Queensland diesel rail motor into the remote outback Queensland. We stayed 3 nights in outback accommodation where the hospitality was amazing. The drivers were friendly & very knowledgeable about the surrounds, wildlife etc..as I travelled alone, i really appreciated the friendliness of fellow travellers.

We have just returned after a trip to far North Queensland which included the amazing experience of the four day, three night Savannahlander train journey. From the 6.30 am departure from Cairns Station, up through the rain forest route to Kuranda and on eventually 425 km inland via the Queensland savannah to Forsayth and back to Cairns this was an... We picked up the train in Mount Surprise and rode to Einasleigh to explore Copperfield Gorge. The train is a four day tour but the one we took was from Bedrock Village Park, they take you to the station to pick up the train and pick you up in Einasleigh and take you on a walk around the gorge while... We booked a 4 day tour on the Savannahlander Rail Motor which travelled from Cairns to Mt Surprise with side tours along the way. The trip leaves Cairns Station early on Wednesday Morning and travels through the back blocks of Cairns and suburbs (always fun to peep into people's backyards and see what they're up to), stopping at the beautiful... We travelled from Cairns to Forsayth and return on a four day tour on the Savannahlander. It is a wonderful tour on an iconic old rail car and as it rattles along the track the drivers, Lee and Will, carry on with very interesting comentary about the area. You can walk to the front and sit with the driver and... More

An excellent short trip on the train with a return bus trip to Forsayth. A great experience on this iconic train especially when it was not possible for us to do the complete trip to Cairns. The driver was also a great guide giving us plenty of relevant information on the way and actually stopping the train for photo opportunities... More

We really enjoyed our four-day excursion into the Queensland Outback on the Savannahlander. First and foremost of course is the train itself, a rattling rocking old beast which makes the journey a whole lot of fun . Our drivers, Lee and Will, were of course highly skilled and knowledgeable about the places and wildlife we saw, but all with the... More
