Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

The best public pool ever

The lagoon was a very large 'infinite' swimming pool right by the harbor. It had a very lively atmosphere. Our kids had great fun.

It's very busy, great for kids of course, life guards on stand by and great for the hot days, weekends have local bands playing on a stage near by, market stalls on Saturdays, and sun bathers on the surrounding grass. There are also bbq free to use through out the day and a super market not to faraway to buy... More

The Esplanade boardwalk and swimming lagoon are truly gems in Carins, especially in the summer when it's quite hot! My friend and I decided to spend a few hours here before our flight back to Sydney. There are various different depths within the lagoon, so great place for kids to swim and play in as well as for adults. It... More

Great if your accomodation does not have a pool. This is a very large, irregularly shaped public pool with enough space and different areas to accomodate all - kids, couples, senior, etc. Several water fountain features please kids. Even a sandy beach on one end. Lifeguards. Free of charge. The surrounding park often has live bands on weekends. Free bar-b-ques... More

Located on the waterfront this is a safe place to swim as they have nets to stop the stinging octopus- because of the reef the waves are gentle

This is right by our hostel so spend most days here! We can't fault it, it's very clean and a great alternative to the muddy beaches of cairns! We even got to do a free aqua class one night which was super fun and got everyone involved!

Get accommodation along the Esplanade so that you can enjoy all that the Esplanade has to offer. Cool sea breeze, leisurely walks, swim in the Lagoon plus more. Its the best part of town.
