Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

Went down and had a dip at the cairns esplanade swimming pool. It was busy with tourists and just what I needed to get out of the muggy heat. There is a store next to it that you can buy food and sunscreen. Lots of places to lay for a tan too!!

Lockers avail for $2 and kiosk for ice creams on site. The only problem I had with it was that it had rained heavily the night before so the grassy area was soggy and muddy. Otherwise, it's a great way to cool down in a town with no beach. They even had a market and live band playing on the... More

There aren't many cities or towns around with a huge lagoon pretty much in the middle of it. Cairns has one. It's basically an enormous swimming pool with a sandy beach on one side, water sprays, gazebos and a view out over the bay, where you can't swim because of the huge mud flats (teeming with bird life!) full of... I was looking forward to a dip in the lagoon and was not disappointed. The water is clean and not heavily chlorinated like I expected. It was like swimming in fresh water. It does get busier as the day goes on so I would go earlier if you don't like crowds. A lovely place to relax and swim in the... More

It is an outdoor swimming pool and great for sunbathing. Would recommend high sun factor as it is a sun trap. Lifeguard on duty and areas for the kids to swim safely

The esplanade lagoon is a great place to watch people go pass, have a swim and chill in the afternoon. One of my favorite place on earth, I love the atmosphere on the esplanade, it is like being permanently on holidays when I go there.
