Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

Yesterday we walked along the Cairns esplanade to check out The Lagoon and it was stunning! Yes it was a beautiful day but the water was so blue, the sand was so white and it looked clean and fresh. It wasn't overcrowded and we loved our time here!

This is the best free family ay out and the kids will love it but so will mum and day, the scenery is just breathtaking and great lifeguards and the water is warm. You just can beat this day out and Maccers is just across the road.

Fantastic spot for the whole family to swim, picnic, have a bbq or play. Lifeguards on duty while open and various depths to suit everyone.

I often think, how uninspired one must be to have conjured up this drab of a swimming pool in a tropical location that beckons the soul to unfold itself in the natural beauty. There is no natural here. Just cookie cutter mouthwash.

The ocean was so far from the path and swimming lagoon, the pool looked like it was facing a gross swamp. They had some love music in the grass area.

Amazing that this place is free. Great for little kids as it has really shallow parts too. With a small fake beach that leads into the pool, you can have a beach day without going to the beach. Probably my favourite place in cairns.

This is an excellent example of forward thinking councils and what they can do to promote their area and provide great facilities for locals and tourists. Due to the very real issue of crocodiles in the waterways, this safe alternative offers an attractive location and a free swimming experience. The facilities are first class with life guards, lockers to store... More

The problem (and frustrating thing) when visiting north Queensland is the impossibility to swim in the ocean because of crocodile shenanigans. This lovely lagoon offers a great alternative. Next to the shoreline, you can swim or just get your feet in depending on your mood with the various depths of water. Also features some sand patches for complete beach day... More

We made the most of the gorgeous esplanade every morning! The view, lush vegetation & mass plantings, along with a constant, lively vibe made it the place to be. One only has to spend 5 magnetic minutes there, to gain a warm, wonderful perspective of the type of holiday you're in for in Cairns. ...whether it b relaxing or full... More
