Great tour of the Walter Taylor Bridge and apartment with Gerry from Brisbane Greeters. The history is fascinating and I’ve always wanted to go into the apartment in the bridge - there aren’t too many bridges with living quarters! It must have been an amazing place to live. The apartment is surprisingly roomy and the views are great. The children growing up there must have had a fabulous time. Highly recommend the tour, which had a good smattering of local history too.

Alison was our greeter and she was very knowledgeable. Great to learn about our own history. I remember this bridge as a youngster and wondering if people lived in there! We learnt a lot including about the Green family (toll master), the cable, and much more. Imagine raising 6 children without a yard or barriers on stairs and balconies!! Highly recommend this tour

I have always loved this bridge with its deco era feel and look.... to konw there is a residence at one end and that there is a museum or sorts at other is cool....

Our Very knowledgeable guide, Peter, informed us of the history of the bridge and the described the life of builder, and the 1st toll collector. Very interesting.

Whenever I crossed the bridge formerly known as 'The Indooroopilly Toll Bridge' (until the sixties were swinging and you could buy plastic Beatle wigs and make love not war), I was intrigued that people still lived therein. I craved to see their living quarters. What does a bridge 'house' look like? I felt all the frustration of a tourist locked out of a museum. I still want to look.
It was rightly known as, 'Walter Taylor Bridge' after an amazing resident who saw the need for a bridge connecting Indooroopilly and Chelmer. He designed, constructed and funded one. That's what I call community spirit! It has classy Harbour Bridge connections; some of the supporting cables are genuine surplus ones from the Harbour Bridge another Art Deco number finished earlier.
A suspension bridge, in engineering terms it is both vehicular and pedestrian and opened in 1936, which makes it Art Deco. I've seen a black and white photo from the 30s of a mighty fine group of fit men in suits and hats striding across the bridge. One day I must walk it and try the doors of the two now empty lovely looking apartment buildings. Any important person reading this who has the power to get me in, be my hero and do p;ease contact me. xx

We went on a tour of the bridge during the Brisbane Open House. You can book anytime though, through the Brisbane Greeters. It's free!
They took us on a walk through the bridge, providing stories as we went. It is amazing to think people used to live in this bridge. It's pretty tiny in there! The history behind this place is really interesting. I would recommend a visit, to see the inside and hear the stories for yourself.

Kind of a strange little bridge. What makes it strange are the apartments in the towers. They used to rent them out. Now I think it is just staff use.
You can get a tour of the bridge some times too. Not sure when though.

Even though we are locals of Brisbane it was a very informative and interesting tour. Recommend others to do it. The Brisbane greeters tour guides were very knowledgeable and happily answered everyone's questions.

Great views of the homes along Indooroopilly River. Nothing much to see otherwise and a quick walk from end to end.

The bridge is pretty famous, to Brisbanians at least. One of those things I always wanted to do (go inside) though never had a prompt to do. I finally decided to go and it was outstanding. The tour, which you need to book online in advance, was a little slow to get going. You walk over the adjacent ped/cycle bridge, under and then finally over the Walter Taylor. The history of the bridge is fascinating and going inside is a rare experience for Australia and I dare say the world. This should be one of the biggest attractions in Brisbane, yet the council do a few free tours a week. I highly recommend, it is something that really sets Brisbane apart.
