This Cathedral is a beautiful building with wonderful stain glassed windows, some very modern indeed, the colours of which are projected on to the walls and floor as the sun moves round, a lovely sight. The wood carvings are so intricate. The whole place was peaceful and bright on the day we were there. A lovely place to sit and contemplate, whatever your religious beliefs or non-beliefs.

The building dates to 1901 with the laying of the foundation stone by the Duke of Cornwall and York, later crowned King George V. My guide advised that the Cathedral was constructed in three stages, 1906-1910, 1964-1968 and the final stage 1989-2009. A floor plan of the Cathedral shows the three stages in colour gradient. It was designed in the Gothic revival style although the construction is claimed to be French Gothic. Walls are constructed from sandstone with granite foundations and the building has the distinction of having the only fully stone vaulted ceiling in Australia. The workmanship demonstrates the skill of the masons employed on each stage. Beautiful stained glass windows, baptismal font, pulpit and lectern. The organ is one of the largest in Australia with over 4,000 pipes.
Glad that I visited to see this architectural masterpiece.

My second visit to the cathedral but my first to choral Evensong. As a chorister myself in England I thought the singing was excellent. Unfortunately the acoustics do not do justice to the choir (my personal view). I did not get the opportunity to walk around the cathedral but will do so on my next visit,

With her 2 spires and 12 bells, St John’s cathedral is the perfect host for the candlelight concert’s that have become a part of her monthly calendar of events. From Hans Zimmer and Tchaikovsky to Coldplay and Vivaldi, these hallowed halls bring in the sweetest sound. The stone walls carve a rich depth to the acoustics from the instruments being played and the flickering of soft light is accentuated along the stained glass windows. Walking along her sandstone floors with the many candles to light your way, you can see how it is these very simple touches that create a soft mood, a stunning ambience to lift the sounds heard all around. No thought to anything else, for no other noise can be found. Here, in this beautiful place- St. John’s cathedral and her intimate candlelight concerts will herald a new way of appreciating the classical & modern genres loved by all and a way to find space.

The building is more impressive on the outside but still interesting to view on the inside. It was our only cathedral visit on this trip. It was near our hotel.

We happened to be walking by this cathedral and something drew us in. We are not religious people but we went inside anyways. The building was fantastic but more importantly we met a retire physician that gave us a historical run down of the cathedral which was quite enjoyable. If you have a moment even if you are not the religious type stop by for a visit you will not be disappointed.

we had heard about all the restoration work - loved the new stained glass windows and the stonework, particularly in the front entrance ceiling.

Attended a service. Very high Anglican. Stayed for a cuppa afterwards but noted worshippers were not very friendly towards visitors ie no one approached us.

We had our wedding at this cathedral and it was amazing. We captured incredible pictures with the sunlight streaming through the restored stain glass windows and the gothic style architecture provided the perfect backdrop.
The only negative aspect is that they are in the process of replacing the beautiful old pews with 'architectually designed chairs' and while they might be comfortable, they are an eye sore and don't do ANY justice to the building. Such a shame.

Pearson designed this and it is similar to his other great work Truro Cathedral in the UK. Beautiful Brisbane Porphyry exterior with a clean Helidon sandstone interior. One of the great Cathedrals of Australia and certainly worth a visit. Bowen House which is the Deanery beside the Cathedral was originally the residence of the first Governor of Brisbane George Bowen.

Thanks Heather. Apologies for the lack of welcome on your visit. I am a member of the parish at St John's and in early 2016 our Council moved to introduce a specific welcoming of all present at services. We publicly announced this, mentioning it twice monthly at services for the whole year and I think you would find a ready welcome should you return, as the congregations have embraced this important outreach activity - and basic courtesy to visitors. We continue to publicly promote the ideal of welcoming newcomers, and each other both by comment and written form.
