What a fantastic week in Longreach. For such an out of the way place, it sure had a lot to see and do.
I absolutely loved the wide open plains and endless blue sky, such a feeling of freedom compared to the claustrophobic high rise of a city.
It was hot, a bit too hot for my personal liking but you have to expect that.
Hire a car and get out to other places near by.

If not for COVID there is no way in hell I would go to longreach. A hot dusty drive dodging Roos , road kill and flocks of birds and sky high fuel prices.

Accommodation, food and attractions are ridiculously expensive.

But

Qantas founders museum is amazing (dammed expensive), outback attractions are good and there is heaps to see and do and we have totally enjoyed the experience

But

For the same cost I could do three weeks overseas in a five star hotel after departing from the Qantas club and not driving.

A great attraction but not cost comparative compared to OS

Longreach is on the Tropic of Capricorn. The town although small has many intersting shops, a RSL club and several hotels. we syaed at the Saltbush Retreat out of tow. There is a nature walk gpong frpm the Australian Stockmna's Hall of Fame to Town, a 30 minute walk. The people are friendly and welcoming. There is a multitude of accommodation and many caravan parks. many tourist attractions.

OK it's a small outback town. This review is only to warn of an arrival after 1 pm if you're looking to eat. We arrived on a Sunday just before 2PM, and despite advice from the hotel, we found that NOTHING is open for food after 2PM on Sunday, until dinner time. Google may say otherwise, but when we rocked up they were closed, or closing. I don't know what the other days of the week are like.

I use to live in Longreach and have been back many times to one of my favorite towns. Unfortunately this trip I found the people working in the tourist attractions to be rude and very unfriendly. I saw many instances of older visitors being treated badly. I doubt if they are locals, more likely people employed from outside the town for the high season. I drove away not wanting to return.

I was pleasantly surprised by Longreach. Most of the people I met were helpful. They gave me information about places to see - other than the big obvious ones, e.g. the Qantas Founders' Outback Museum. There were the little places, e.g. the Railway Museum and the Power House Museum. They also recommended places to eat, especially when some popular ones were still closed because of decreases in custom as a result of fewer people travelling.

There's an interesting well kept cemetery for people interested in such things. No one but a council care taker was there for a litle while when I called in. There are markers placed near graves, mainly of historic significance to Longreach.

The end of winter is a good time to visit. I'd go back, but not in summer - too, too hot, especially if you come from the coast!

Boring. Qantas Museum expensive. Everything is expensive. Accommodation limited and expensive. Was looking forward to a cheap steak or lamb but just as expensive as Gold Coast. Save your dollars and go to Bali

Considering this operation is a Government Department it is very well run
My wife and I holidayed recently in Longreach and decided to go by rail..Spirit of The Outback
We purchased a first class sleeper
It is a 24 hour trip and included all meals which are served exceptionally well with white tablecloths and fresh flowers
The menu is varied , of excllent qualaity and generous
Not so the wine list which listed ONE WHITE , ONE RED AND ONE SPARKLING!!!!
First things first though..we departed the Transit station but it was a struggle to find the right carriage , berth etcetera as no staff were there to help us..not a good beginning
If you joined enroute , passengers were shown to their seat or sleping berth as we found out but not at the main station
The cabins are small and the beds are bunks which are made up at night
If you are elderly or of large build you will struggle to even turn around in your cabin let alone clambouring up the temporary ladder to the top bunk
Toilet facilities and showers are located at each end of the carriages
Do NOT request a cabin at the end of the carriages as these cabins are right over the wheels and trust me you will hear and feel every lurch of the train..plus it is so noisy..take ear muffs!!
When you arrive at the Transit Centre , ignore the signs for baggage check in..they are for bags that you dont need in the cabin.
We almost got caught out as our bags contained clothes etc for the trip and we carried them on board
Overall though we both enthoroughly our trip

Stayed at Longreach Caravan Park for 6 nights. A very pleasant place staff were very helpful. Amenities clean tidy and well maintained. The restaurant was a inexpensive place for a lovely meal and a bottle of wine was not out of the question.
Plenty of room for a van we had a camper trailer.
Will be revisiting this place again in the future

What a vibrant town Longreach is - well worth a visit. Stockman Hall of Fame; School of the Air; Qantas Founders Museum; Cobb & Co coach and a day flight down the Cooper Creek to the famous Burke & Wills Dig Tree, over Lake Eyre, back to Birdsville for lunch and up the Diamantina channel country - and more. We visited in early May 2012 and loved this vibrant outback town.
