Having taken my share of online classes, it came as a surprise to me to learn that SOTA will be celebrating its 70th anniversary next year. From its early days communicating with kids throughout Australia via ham radio to more modern satellite-based internet connections today, they have an impressive program, and the tour is, dare I say, educational. Worth a visit if you're in Alice Springs.

Thank you for taking the time to visit Alice Springs School of the Air. Yes, School of the Air was officially opened right here in Alice Springs in 1951. And in 2020 we have answered questions from around the world on how to successfully teach children remotely.

Don't miss this experience, in observing the students in far away station properties, learning all about life and education in the world's largest class room, 1.300,000 square kilometres, it was a real eye opener for us city residents. Don't forget to donate some books to the distant students.

I honestly wasn't expecting this to be such an interesting tour, but I'm glad I got the chance to visit. I think this is an especially interesting place to visit for educators and radio equipment nerds (I am neither), but worth checking out.

The concept for the School of Air dates back to 1951 and its mission was, and still is today, to provide education to children living in remote areas. Our guide was Chelsea and she was very knowledgeable and friendly. She provided a presentation and we also viewed a video, saw a homework pouch that is delivered to the students and were able to see teachers interact with students having a course on-line. There were also many pieces of art on display that were created by the students that are part of the program. At the conclusion of the presentation we had the opportunity to visit the gift shop and purchase a book that would be sent out to children that are part of the program. Tip - Take fly nets and place the fly net over a wide hat so the netting has separation from your face. THE FLY'S ARE EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE AND AWFUL. Someone mentioned that Skin So Soft works and the fly’s stay away. This is not true. We also bought fly repellent and that did not work. Our tour guide, who resides in Melbourne, indicated that there is nothing that works, except the fly nets make it a bit more tolerable.

Karen, thank you for visiting Alice Springs School of the Air. Yes school of the Air began in 1951 by radio but went completely to IDL (interactive distance Learning) online in 2005. We have a wide range of products available in our gift shop, but during the summer months our fly nets are popular.

We did a tour of this centre as part of the “A Town Like Alice” tour. We had a great presentation of the history of the school of the air & were able to watch live classes in progress. A fascinating use of technology to give all kids access to quality schooling. Well worth a visit to help support this organisation.
