Ewaninga Rock Carvings are about 30 km south of Alice Springs beside the road to Chambers Pillar off the airport access road. This was the old road south from Alice beside the railway line and telegraph wire and is suitable for 2WD, except after rain.

This site seems to be off the beaten tourist trail and you are unlikely to meet too many people there. There's an easy circular walk which takes you past the best of the ancient rock carvings and to the claypan lake which attracted the aboriginal inhabitants of the area because of the plentiful water and food. They spent their idle time carving their stories into the hard sanstone.

As well as seeing the carvings, at about the 20km point (marked by a white car bonnet with "20" on it), there are several tracks leading due west off the road that go to the telegraph wire and the intact remnant of the old Ghan railway line. The road also passes the National Road Transport Museum and the Ghan Museum closer to the airport.

Definitely worth a half day visit to see all of these.

The Ewaninga Rock Carvings are not far from Alice Springs on the road to Chambers Piller (before Maryvale). Enjoyed the carvings near the clay pan most of all!
