What a wonderful Opera. Firstly the set design was magnificent. The costumes divine and the cast just brilliant. I could not think of a better way to spend an evening then taking in this funny, cheeky and fast moving Opera. Mozart's music is dramatic and breathtaking.Opera Australia puts its heart and soul. in to making this a rich and vibrant opera,From the exquisite wigs, costumes , sets and cast and orchestra. If you want to see what in my mind is such a great Opera I would highly recommend this breathtaking gem.

We saw Faust last night at the Sydney Opera House. Although our seats were way in almost the last row of the stalls, we had excellent views and the acoustics were excellent. The opera was well performed by both the orchestra and the singers. The costumes and scenery were wonderful. If you're coming to Sydney, going to the opera here is a must.

My wife and I attended the performance of Don Juan and it was excellent! We had restricted view tickets on the side which were very good and a bargain at AUS$48 with pretty good view. The bar was excellent particularly as we arrived late and they kept the opened bottle for the first interval. The only negative is the air conditioning which is too efficient... Fortunately we learnt from our previous visit to bring warm clothing!!!

As a great opera fun, I was shocked that the performance of Aida was allowed to proceed in extreme wet weather on Saturday 4 April. I turned up at the venue fully expecting that the performance would be cancelled, given it had been raining heavily, without a break, all day and the forecast was for rain, rain and more rain. In these circumstances it was impossible to enjoy any aspect of the performance. Throughout the time we managed to stay, the conditions varied between unceasing heavy rain and torrential downpours. We observed people departing from the outset, and my friends and I left at interval, along with just about everybody else, as far as I could see. At this point the announcer was still pretending there was nothing out of the ordinary, talking about a thirty minute interval before the next half; I'd be surprised if anyone remained. Despite coming dressed in wet weather gear (which, as it turned out, was not designed for hours of exposure to an onslaught of torrential rain) we were all completely drenched, through every layer of clothing by the time we left. We felt very sorry for the performers on the open stage, some of whom carried umbrellas, while others were draped in rain capes, and yet others simply dragged their sodden garments around through the streams of water running down the stage. In my view, this was a very disrespectful way to treat the artists as well as the audience members, who had paid dearly for an experience they could not actually appreciate in the circumstances. If you are considering going to this event, be aware that Opera Australia's "wet weather policy" means that the performance will proceed notwithstanding a constant heavy downpour, and the prospect of gaining any enjoyment from the evening - let alone any refund for your expensive outlay on the tickets - is NIL. I have enjoyed previous Opera on the Harbour performances in good weather, but this wet weather disaster has really put me off any future events of this nature.

I am a patron of Opera Australia for the past few years, ex Syd sider. Yes AIDA in the right conditions is fantastic but 4 april was not the case.

. We flew up interstate for the Opera on 4 April for the outdoor opera. We had looked at the weather forecast and knew that it was raining. The temperature was 16 degrees, breezy and cold and the rain was incessant and did not start - not a passing shower in summer!. We had brought serious wet weather gear and spent the arvo looking for tarpaulin and ended up with a shower curtain to put on our legs from Myers. We were told that no decision for cancelling opera would be made until 7.30pm. Well the organisers went ahead with the performance which was very very disappointing given the extreme weather conditions. The Randwck races and the open air cinemas were all postponed. The performers had umbrellas and spray jackets on while performing. Yes it was commendable, however we had to sit in the rain and no umbrellas were allowed. There were also some gymnastics done in the wet. We had to leave at half time as it was so so cold and we were drenched, our underwear et al. We were very cold and walked back to our hotel. Half time most people left in droves and I can say that the place was quite empty as they put their health ahead of the cost. it is not about the money it is about building goodwill and looking after your customers.

The decision to go ahead in such extreme weather conditions was unreasonable and unprofessional. I contacted Opera Australia and they said that you cannot swap tickets from 1 month from performance. Basically this experience has left me quite disappointed with the Handa Opera organisers as it appears to be financial considerations ahead of the goodwill, well being, and enjoyment of your customers and patrons. Yes there was no refund or exchanges or reschedules. Who does that?. Handa is a joint collaboration between City of Syd and Opera Aust yet the decision not to cancel has reflected poorly and has a bad taste for me and my partner. Yes it was bad luck the weather was crap however we had thought that common sense would prevail and they would cancel.

I for one WILL NOT be buying any tickets to the Handa performances anymore. I have also shared my views with my opera friends and they have agreed and will not buy any of the Handa tickets. The show cannot go on a the expense of your customers enjoyment and health!!.

Please reconsider your policy and apply a reasonable man test as no one would have gone out in this extreme weather conditions. Opera has sometimes been viewed as a snob value but your patrons and audience should be put above everything else. No one can be expected to fully enjoy the performance in the cold and wet.

It is about your audience, customers and goodwill!!. Please reconsider your policy as it is totally unreasonable. It has been a missed opportunity to the right thing by your customers & patrons!,

Hi sparktoflame, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. I'm very sorry that your experience was so heavily impacted by the rain on Easter Saturday. We do tell people that the performance will proceed, regardless of the weather, as long as wind and lightening don't pose a danger to the artists or audience. We take OH&S very seriously, and have a wet weather plan that is enacted for our performers on stage in times of rain, and for our audience. We are always reluctant to let down our audience by cancelling a show, particularly when so many people travel to Sydney specifically for it. Please be assured that your feedback will be passed onto our event organisers. Kind regards, Lara, Customer Service Coordinator

I love the opera but we have friends that needed an introduction before commiting to a full Opera. So when an event came up by Opera Australia called 'Great Opera Hits' we thought this would be such an opportunity.
At $49pp it wasn't an insignificant cost but much cheaper than a full opera. The advertising read 'Great Opera Hits is back at the Sydney Opera House for just $49 per person. In A-reserve seating, listen to some of opera’s greatest hits, including arias from Bizet, Puccini, Rossini and Verdi, performed by some of Australia’s top opera stars.'
Unfortunately it was dire. Second string singers accompanied by a pianist/master of ceremonies who obviously fancied himself as a comedian and failed abysmally.
We were embarrassed in front of our friends, and I was appalled at the offering. The audience, on a Sunday afternoon in March, seemed to consist msinly of retirees. Perhaps I should havd known...
I have been to a few operas by Opera Australia but after this catestrophy I won't go again, the experience still angers me four months later!

Dear Albywon, I’m sorry that you were disappointed with ‘Great Opera Hits’. The concert is designed to be more informal than a fully staged opera, with some explanation of the arias being heard. Thank you very much for taking the time to review. We have taken on board your feedback. Kind regards, Lara

The show had no bearing on the atmosphere musical style dance style, costume authenticity or anything else much of the SIXTIES!! It was just an exhausting 'gym routine' for these youngsters who clearly had no idea of how we were in the sixties.! The cast worked themselves into a dizzy spin with acrobatics galore...but this was NOT sixties related. The show was a nod to millenial ideas of dance routines that are merely showing off gymnastics...there is a difference.,..rockn'roll ruled in the sixties, guys!! There were rope petticoats, tight waists, beehive hairdos for girls, sleeked back brilliantine 'Fonze' type hair cuts and leather jackets for the men!! Not a single whisper to the best of the sixties...just trying to 'modernise' the show means it FAILED miserably for anyone under 50.. Make sure the adverts for West Side Story include...the notice :For audiences under 30 who never experienced the REAL original version and therefore won't mind what they are missing'.

Dear Chris, Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy the performance and the costumes of West Side Story. I passed your comment on to the Executive Producer and the artistic team. I’m sure they will appreciate the feedback. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts. Kind regards, Aude
