About
The Anzac Memorial, in Sydney's Hyde Park, is NSW's principal memorial to all Australians who have served in the Defence Force. The Memorial building in both its original and its extended form is a work of art and remarkable piece of architecture. It is a physical expression of the spirit and legend of the Anzacs and a place of comfort for those who have lost loved ones. Exhibition and interpretation spaces allow the Anzac Memorial to illustrate the evolution of Australian military service while focusing on NSW stories. The detailed storytelling within the new Exhibition Gallery complements the quiet spaces and symbols of the original Memorial building. The Anzac Memorial is open everyday except Good Friday and Christmas Day, please visit the website for further details. Admission to the Memorial is free.

Neighborhood: Central Business District
The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.

It’s not huge; the top floor is mostly a space for silent contemplation and the names of various battles and locations where ANZAC forces operated during World War I were carved into the walls. The docents were both talkative and informative. The ground floor had very interesting exhibit about the royal Australian Navy (RAN) with photos from veterans, lots of ships’ crests, and some uniforms. The lower floor, which I ran out of time for, was fascinating. I needed another hour there and will try to go back. They have a very large exhibit of Australian forces throughout the ages up to current times; they were involved in places I never would’ve thought of like Fiji, what looks like desert storm, and desert locations. Lots of uniforms with explanations; stories of individuals; medals; a great photo video section of the forces in action from the 1960s forward. I had to hurry through this section. I was about to head out because they were closing in 10 minutes and realized I had missed probably one of the most significant aspects of the memorial – the circular area of the lower floor contained samples of soil from every Australian town where Australian military who had died during World War I lived. The circle is filled with narrow marble slabs engraved with the name of the town and set into the marble is a clear circular disc maybe 3 inches wide by 1 inch deep that contains the soil. And they’re in alphabetic order. The soil differences in color, graininess, etc. was really interesting. Then in the center of the room on the floor was a large circle with the names of battle locations where Australians died and a soil sample from each of them; some of them have no soil, and the docent explained that was because the governments of those countries said (in essence) “you invaded us, we didn’t ask you here, our people died, and we are not giving you any soil (Vietnam and Afghanistan)”. I would’ve liked to spend more time there, so will try to get back.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten April 18, 2024
- Skeney57Sydney, Australia25,051 contributionsA Moving ExperienceHaving lived in Sydney all my life I'm ashamed I've never been inside the Memorial before. I actually visited two days in a row and wonder why I never had before! I was involved in a WW1 remembrance being held there so had to quickly explore the site. The Anzac Memorial is a fabulous 1934 built building in an exquisite art deco style, the architect Charles Bruce Dellit doing the theme justice. The interior is made up of several Halls, of Memory, Silence & Service and each has a particular story to tell. There is the Well of Contemplation with marble balustrades and myriad motifs dedicated to various WW1 battle sites. There are also display areas with RAN and AIF history on show. The sculpture, Sacrifice, by artist George Rayner Hoff, is particularly poignant and dominates the space. The newer addition is the Hall of Service where soil samples from 100 Military sites are presented and 1,701 samples from NSW Cities, Suburbs, Towns & Villages are in surrounding wall sconces. Thoroughly recommended if you are near Hyde Park or have an hour or so to visit. Visit at 11am to experience the Last Post & Ode Service, a true Sydney treasure to enjoy.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 29, 2024
- MuzzamuzzamuzzaWellington, New Zealand149 contributionsA moving experienceThe free tour is worth doing. It takes an hour, which is surprising because at first glance the memorial does not look very big. However, the building is rich in symbolism, and the guide explained the meaning of the architectural elements that a visitor might otherwise miss. The museum display in the lower ground area has very interesting displays about the Australian Anzacs and Australian military in general. It was nice to see a New Zealand flag flying beside the memorial to recognise the "NZ".Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 14, 2024
- Armağan 🇹🇷🇦🇺🇻🇳Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam9,048 contributionsWar Memorial is a must see …I now live mainly in Vietnam and decided to on this short trip back to Sydney to visit the Anzac Memorial while in the city. This is one of the most striking buildings and is in its totality a memorial to all ANZACS who lost their lives in war. I have visited Lone Pine in Gallipoli as well and although both are very different places, they both have that incredible sense of a place imbued with a sacred aura for sadness and bravery of countless lives lost. Here, the architecture, the eternal flame & the central statue combine to create a somber mood and invite reflection. The new additions completed in 2018 add a sympathetic modern element to the memorial.Visited February 2025Traveled soloWritten February 12, 2025

This is an imposing and impressive memorial dedicated to the service and sacrifice of Australians in peace and war. It is also regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of art deco style architecture in Australia. Great accessibility for all visitors. Wish that I had known in advance of the guided tours. The buttresses have sculptures mounted atop and there are sculpted figures above at each corner. The Pool of Reflection is located to the North of the building in the park.

The ANZAC War Memorial commemorates those men and women who served their country in time of need. The memorial is a handsome building, it is one of Australia's most distinctive remaining Art Deco structures. Sydney is the principal city of New South Wales, which is the most populous Australian State. The ANZAC Memorial has kept up with changing times, it's an interesting museum of war in days gone by.

This memorial is an absolute credit to those who have been instrumental in its construction, setting up and upkeep. I have never been a history buff but was enthralled for every second of the three hours we spent there. A fitting tribute to those who were in anyway part of our country’s involvement of past events. Well worth a visit and allow plenty of time. There is a remembrance service each day at 11am which is not only very moving but so appropriate.

If you’re tourist which we were, we stumbled on this place by accident whilst out exploring. May I suggest better marketing of what’s inside being given outside as there’s little information showing what’s inside which is a shame as it’s well worth a visit and it’s a lot bigger than you may think.
Great informative place offering Australias role in conflict across different wars. A good insight into certain individuals, teams, infantries and the parts they played in several conflicts.
Lots of things to see, read and listen to. Well worth a visit

It's hard to be in Australia and not be aware of the Anzacs, the Australian and New Zealand young men who went to fight in the 1st World War; many of them never to return. Australia is filled with memorials to them; the one in Hyde Park is probably yhe best known.
The memorial also houses a small museum, which tells the story of some of the Anzacs. Some of their personal belongings are on display, with their stories told. It's a moving place for sure. One can spend a good 45 minutes here, taking in the majesty and solitude of the place. It's well worth visiting.

We visited the ANZAC Memorial recently. It is an impressive monument, originally built in the 1930s to commemorate those who participated in World War I. However it now honours all those who have taken part in the various wars over time. Unfortunately at the time of our visit it was closed so we were only able to view it from the outside.

This was opposite our hotel so we popped over to have a look. I’d been there before but was totally unaware that there was access to the bottom level .. we were fortunate that a gentleman in the WM was able to point out things to us and explain meaning and give info or we would have missed so much.

The ANZAC war memorial in Sydney's Hyde Park is not only a memorial for WWI but also a museum which honours all those lost in wars. Recently renovated, it is truly worth visiting and the building itself and landscaped surrounds with pools and fountains easily enables the visitor to move about and reflect in a peaceful environment. As with all war memorials, it is more for quiet self-reflection and remembrance rather than to glorify. In this, it is very successful and a very moving experience. I stay at the Pullman hotel on Hyde Park regularly and on my last stay, I managed to get day and night photos which I will attach.

The Anzal Memorial is in my humble opinion a MUST SEE if your in Sydney. It is not merely a memorial but a museum and heritage centre which all Australians & New Zealanders must be extremely proud of. From the eternal flame burning in the heart of the building to the cascading water features outside this structure does not glorify war, it reminds us of the lives that were lost and certainly brought things home to me. Nearby, there is now a new memorial in honour of the indiginous Australians and New Zealanders who also made the ultimate sacrifice.

The ANZAC Memorial commemorates the 60,000 young Australians who fell in World War I, and those who fell in later conflicts. It is an imposing structure. It also houses some 6,000 artefacts connected to WWI. It was paid for by public subscriptions.. The Memorial is in Hyde Park.
