Neighborhood: Darlinghurst
Home of the small bar revolution in Sydney, Darlinghurst has more bars per capita than any other suburb. Themes range from American whiskey bars and 1950’s theme bars to hidden bars requiring secret passwords. Oxford Street is the "Gay Capital" of Australia, where gay and lesbian-friendly venues feature “diva shows” and dancing until the morning. Vintage lovers flock to Crown Street, and small designer boutiques can be found along Victoria and Bourke Streets. Dining in Darlinghurst is a gastronomic adventure. Food from all over the world is on the menu, from American ribs to tapas, sushi to gelato and every ethnicity in between.

This is a brand new theatre for Sydney located in one of the back streets of Darlinghurst, Burton Street in a corner position which gives the building a very dignified street presence. The building is old for Sydney, over 130 years. It used to be a Baptist Tabernacle. All of the old stained glass windows and gorgeousness of architectural touches remain intact. The interior has been tastefully converted into a playhouse which seats about 200 people, including wheelchair access. The building's interior is all about the timber. The toilets are easy to access. The foyer is warm and welcoming. The bar is conveniently located in the space. I was so delighted when first I set eyes on the building. The Playhouse has only recently opened and its inaugural production, one of Arthur Miller's most famous plays: "All My Sons" was playing. The Playhouse has done a deal with a nearby parking station. Because street parking in this part of the city is almost all 1 Hour zones, this was a really smart move. If you take your parking ticket to the box office for stamping you get to pay $13 for what may have been a $69 park. They have also done a deal with a great nearby restaurant, The Commons, and you can have a pre-theatre dinner from a special two course menu for $29. If you want to have a glass of wine, add another $5. So all up they have thought through the needs of their patrons and provided some very attractive and easy options. The seats in the theatre itself are extraordinarily comfortable and easy to get to. The wrapped row arrangement of the auditorium is designed so that every seat has a good view of the stage. You can buy tickets on line and print them out or collect them at the box office up to 15 minutes before a performance, you just need ID. The online booking option also tells you how many metres you are from the stage. All up a fantastic new addition to the Sydney theatre scene.

Amazing theatre in what was once an old church. Clean, impressive design. Great staff, and a lovely restaurant on-site for dinner before our show. Would definitely recommend. The show was great too!

We went to see a performance of All My Sons at the newly renovated theatre. Great performance and what an amazing job they have done renovating the old Baptist Tabernacle.
Hope to see many more Great performances from the Darlinghurst Theatre Company here.

Great theatre for small and intimate shows. Loved Once a few months ago, such fun and so uplifting.
I'm With Her is so different, a group of 9 women telling their individual stories, so disturbing to hear them, so many questions on what type of world we live in but thankfully so much resilience by the women telling their stories.

Attended a wedding at this venue and found the whole experience very moving, not just the service but the venue itself added to the proceedings. Seating very adjacent to the stage and really enjoyable atmosphere!

Just love this theatre, small and intimate and all seats are close enough to feel part of the emotion of the show. A lovely building that has been well converted into a quality playhouse.
Apart from the physical aspects of the theatre, the choice of plays is more realistic than plays chosen at the STC and becomes more enjoyable.
Saw Once, the most enjoyable show I have seen in years - fun and rolllking, the music is infectious but at the same time, very emotional and when "girl" sings, it almost brings tears to your eyes.

Experience this little gem for the first time and was blown away by the standard of the show and the amazing space it is houses. A renovated church offering now theatre goers a very intimate theatre experience.
The show we say was Maggie Stone - an excellent production with a very hard hitting and very relevant message
Will certainly keep this venue on my must watch list.

This theatre is fabulous and the standard of shows are always of high standard. They have a great local deal where if you live in the 2010 or 2011 area you can get a membership card which gives you $10 off tickets. They have a bar and restaurant there, but the restaurant doesn’t open on preview nights and they only serve by the glass on preview shows as well. They do have a lift there if you need. Seats are really comfortable and the venue is very intimate so there are not really any bad seats. Recently saw Torch Song Trilogy and can highly recommend it. It’s just a great venue.

I always enjoy coming to this theatre. What an amazing job they have done in keeping much of the original church windows and ceiling decorations etc, while blending in modern aspects as well. The theatre itself is one of the best in Sydney. All seats have very good views of the stage and none are further than nine rows back.. I’ll be back! D
