Neighborhood: Newtown
A Bohemian inner-west suburb known for its alternative music scene, Newtown is a diverse community offering a multitude of restaurants, art galleries, performance spaces, thrift stores and bars. Home of some of the best live music venues in the city, shows can be found everywhere from the official theaters to the neighborhood pubs. From its humble beginnings as a neighborhood primarily known for its many Thai restaurants, Newtown has evolved into a foodie's paradise with a delightful array of highly innovative cuisines from around the world. It is still possible to eat on a budget, but if you crave a more sophisticated menu, Newtown will not disappoint.

I wandered up and down most of King Street between the University of Sydney and Sydney Park at the bottom. There are quite a few businesses that have closed down or moved away and the street has a feel of getting a bit old.
The positives are that it’s still in a nice part of Sydney. There are lots of businesses across a multitude of categories. It’s the sort of street where a person could find anything. There are book shops, hardware stores, antique and second hand shops, banks, retail outlets, bars and lots of places to get a bite to eat.

Go there by bus or train , good idea is to get off at St Peters station and walk up from the very bottom of King street , enjoying all the funky second hand and small designer boutiques. I love the button shop. Even if you don't need buttons go for a look . There is Leo Monk the bag designer . A great number of hairdressers . Cafes of all ethnicities . A turkish caravan shop . Or it might be Afghani , who knows its full of eclectic stuff you can live without , but might not want to.
There are jewellers who make their own stuff , tattoo parlours, sushi shops , the newtown SUSHI TRAIN is the best in sydney in my book. Then there is a couple of garden shops , flowers, bakeries , pie shops ,fish and chip shops , Thai restaurants galore and the home of THAI POTONG. There are Vietnamese restaurants. The turkish place called funnily enough Istanbul makes the best vine leaf rolls , a little spicy but unctuous and divine slopped in some baba ganouge . There are beer shops , SARAH JANE , a nice dress shop with a lot of silk and comfy dresses . She has lots on sale always so try her out. Ice cream shops , the DENDY CINEMA and the dendy cafe who makes the best eggs benedict in the world. There is PENTIMENTO , with its selection of exquisite cards and coffee table books , and a great selection of cooking books. CLEMS CHICKEN , has been going for eons, I love the stuffed chickens , a bit of cauliflower cheese on the side and a tub of mashed potato with gravy. YUM ... There is pizza , smash sausage kitchen , a new fave of many. Around the corner theres Oscillating wildly a well awarded restaurant that is great. Vinnies for all your pre loved clothing is still going strong.
I remember Newtown when it was full of butcher shops and greek milk bars , it was forty years ago . The same pubs are there but now they are super pubs . The Marlborough, is just one who has taken on a new persona in this upgraded part of the world. King Street makes for a great place to do a pub crawl, weekend nights there are bands playing everywhere. Its a lively place Its wonderful , its NEWTOWN

This street is the life line of Newtown, it has so much to offer the visitors, many many restaurants to satisfy any palette, from thai, to vegan eateries it is all here, the murals add to the gritty ness, as do the colourful characters that live in the area, our fave places was earth thai, dendy cinema and the many op shops,. Definitely a must visit to see a different side of Sydney

I was shocked at all the dog poo on the pavement it was everywhere, we came here looking for some good restaurants but all I saw was lots of "burger chains" Ice cream shops, Mexican Chains.. I remember the kicked out Mc Donalds in the 90's and now King St is full Fast food franchise's go figure? also be careful of the beggars they get quite angry when you ignore their requests for money

King St, Newtown is one of the more interesting and eclectic precincts of Sydney. Bohemian, even. Lots of smaller, independent businesses and not a department stores, big-brand chains or franchisee in sight. Instead you'll find a myriad of often cool and/or quirky establishments including cafes, pubs, bookshops, record bars, tattoo parlours, clothes shops (some second-hand, some retro), and purveyors of bric-a-brac. And there are some more regular retailers, too, though the overall tone is definitely 'alternative'. Big variety of restaurants, mostly inexpensive, serving up cuisine from all corners of the globe, with vegetarians well catered for. Newtown is famously where McDonalds went broke (years ago) for lack of patronage. Its quiet early on in the day, but the footpaths get busy about after midday.

Newtown is a pretty cool little suburb that I had the fortune of staying in during my time in Sydney. My favorite part was the amount of delicious vegetarian friendly restaurants in the area. If you like vege food then you really will be spoiled for choice here.

The whole place is always full of large cars, large trucks , large buses, makes you feel unsafe, people hanging around there are creepy, dunno why....really unsafe hanging around there, and no reason to hang around there anyway, no good restaurant, no good cafe, boring clubs, no good pub, no good shops

for those needing a bit of "outer edge CBD" entertainment.. Newtown is in the top 2 locations to enjoy this feeling.

pubs, clubs, bars cafes... everything you could ever want is here... and a bit cheaper then those CBD locations.

keep up to date with the festivals and happenings and make as much time as possible in Newtown.
