A 40-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay will take you to the famous northern beach of Manly. The beaches here are perfect for learning to surf or spending the day sun-tanning. The walk from Spit Bridge to Manly is a great way to experience Sydney Harbor Bay and the Australian bush land. Along the foreshore, there are plenty of watering holes and wine bars with excellent cuisine. There are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants as well, especially along the family-oriented areas like Shelly Beach. An excellent way to experience Manly is to rent a bike and explore the dedicated bike paths and off road trails. The North Head National Park is another must-see. Located on the southern tip of Manly, North Head National Park offers great bushwalks and panoramic views of the city.

- Philip_and_Anne13 contributionsEasy beach trip from Sydney for snorkeling. We took the Manly Ferry from Circular Quay for a 30 minute trip through the harbor to Manly Beach. When we arrived, we stopped by the information station, where we got very helpful suggestions and directions, including the best places to snorkel. A short walk across the island took us to the beach. We looked for umbrellas or chairs for rent, but did not see any. There was about 1 - 2 meter surf and many surfers. We walked some more to Shelly Beach for snorkeling. There was a little surge and visibility was 2-3 meters. Water was about 18 Celsius, so we wore wetsuits. We saw many fish including blue groupers, wrasses and several other types. There is an ID board at the beach for the different species. There is not much shade but a few places to sit or picnic. A rinsing area is near the path back to Manly Beach. We had dinner at Wahlburgers and took the ferry back to Sydney. It was a beautiful beach day during our stop in Sydney.Hi Phillip_and Anne, We are so glad you had such a lovely day at Manly and saw some interesting sea life when you went snorkeling. Countless shops, restaurants, fast food outlets, Gift shops and shops of all types are everywhere. On the day we visited there was a street Market with many lovely items to choose from. The beach itself is wonderful. There is also a trail where people can walk along the shore and enjoy panoramic views.Hi 750dimitrisl, Thank you for sharing your experience of your visit to Manly. - CodyDCWashington DC, District of Columbia7,139 contributionsDuring my first visit to Sydney - took a ferry out to Manly for a lovely morning at the beachWhile visiting Sydney for the first time, decided to take the Manly Ferry to Manly on an early Sunday (to beat the afternoon crowds) on a nice sunny day. The ferry ride was nice and relaxing. Upon arriving at the Manly Wharf, I just followed the crowds that were heading to the beach. The beach was pretty nice, especially with the crescent moon coastline and the tall pine trees along the beach. There is a walking trail that runs along the beach for a nice walk. There are several shops and restaurants between the wharf and the beach, so plenty of things to do. If traveling to Sydney for first time, I would recommend a ferry ride over to Manly, it was about 20 minutes on the fast ferry.Hi CodyDC, Thank you for writing a lovely review. The walk on the promenade is very nice too. We spent a couple of hours on the beach after hiring a beach canopy from a beacfront surf shop for 15 aud which was very convenient and shaded us from the blistering heat. Loved watching the surfers.Hi Garrali We're pleased to hear you enjoyed your afternoon with us. Great town with plenty of shops and restaurants leading down to the seafront. Really odd seeing Christmas Trees mixed in with the palm trees! The beach was lovely with designated areas for swimming and surfing, quite busy but still plenty of room to wander and paddle.Hi smiler1956 Thanks for taking the time to share your experience of Manly, where you can have yourself a very merry - and beachy - little Christmas. While Northern Hemisphere Santa traverses snowbound landscapes, here on the Northern Beaches of Sydney the sun shines bright and hot while we celebrate all the holidays traditions with decorated trees, carols and plenty of amazing light displays. Even our winters don't put paid to beachside enjoyment, with surfing and other water sports enjoyed year round, and our crisp weather perfect for enjoying waterside walking and scenic bushland hikes. To the left when you walk out of the Manly ferry wharf is the protected kids beach that was a hit with the kids.. we than walked down The Corso to the main Manly Beach. The kids had an absolute ball here with nice waves and beautiful golden sand. Amenities: outdoor beach showers near kiosk and indoor showers in change rooms. Lots of shaded shelters along walkway as well. We ended up sitting on one of the benches nearest the store Coles on the Corso for food etc or lots of excellent eateries.Hi ET3121, Thank you so much for your kind words! We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your day at Manly. It's truly a place that captures your heart. It's great to hear that both the protected kids beach near the ferry wharf and the main beach with its inviting waves and golden sand were such a hit with your family. Walks on beach or promenade are great and there are nice shops on the Corso and South Steyne Rd. Better not to bring your car.Hi smoothsailing5 After 45 years of visiting, we'll take your very experienced word that the Manly experience keeps getting better, and thank you for it. Great advice about leaving the car at home, too. - daddy00Northern Virginia, Virginia194 contributionsGreat beach, just a 20-minute ferry ride from downtown Sydney!I am sure things might have been busier on a weekend. But I find it quite amazing that from downtown Sydney, you can take a $6 ferry ride to Manly Wharf, and be at a terrific beach after a 5-10 minute walk. We were there on a Wednesday in March, and the beach was not very crowded. The water was surprisingly warm! (we thought it would be California Pacific chilly). We walked around, had a coffee and some breakfast, and just took in the scenery, then took the 30-minute ferry back to downtown Sydney (the ferry system is AMAZING). Lovely day at Manly.Hi daddy00 Did you know the advertising slogan for Manly from the 1920s was "Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care"? It's great to hear that 100 years later our visitors can still experience that same sense of relaxation and distance from life's hustle and bustle. Caught the ferry over which was lovely. Spent the day shopping and going to the beach. Lots of good shops and good food choices not to mention a couple of good pubs that you can just people watch for hours. We ended up catching the fast ferry back as it was only slightly dearer and only took 15 mins. Would recommend visiting Manly, not as crowded as Bondi!

We took the Manly Ferry across from Sydney Harbour. You can either get an Opal card and load it with some money or just swish a credit card at the barrier. It costs $8 each way. However, if you do it on a Sunday it will only be $2 and any further public transport will be free on the same day. The crossing takes 30 minutes and the ferries run every 20 minutes. You can do a lovely coastal walk, but away from the main ferry area there are no opportunities for refreshments. Beautiful scenery and coastline. Well worth the trip. Highly recommended.

Hi CardiffMaddie
Thanks for your 5* review and helpful info on the transport system. Next time you visit Manly, make sure you cross over the main road, away from the Ferry terminal and head down the Corso, where in 5 minutes you will reach the main beach of Manly. Here you will find may restaurants, cafes and bars (we have over 150 in Manly). Don't forget to venture down the back streets and alleyways as well.
There is also a wonderful walk which incorporates both the harbour and ocean beaches. Make sure you call in at the Visitors Information Centre where the friendly staff can give you free maps and helpful tips!
Cheers

Having been to Sydney many times before, I thought it was time I ventured out of the CBD this time and so I visited Manly. I’m not that much of a beachgoer, so it was great there were hiking trails available that I could do on my day trip there.
Getting to Manly was incredibly easy; the Manly Ferry from Circular Quay is quite regular with the ride taking about 30min and costs less than $10 one-way on the Opal Card (and you don’t need to touch off at Manly). Note, there is also the Manly Fast Ferry which I believe is a bit more expensive and I don’t think the ride to Manly is that much faster than the normal ferry.
There are toilets onboard the ferry, otherwise there is one at Manly Wharf. Head towards the wharf exit and then on your right side look for a sign that says “Carpark Toilets”. You can take the lift down but the stairs are faster. The toilets are cleanish a bit like those I would expect at the beach. If you’re along The Corso shops (the main shopping area in Manly) there is also another set of toilets opposite the Fishmongers Manly restaurant.
I started off at The Corso and made my way down to Manly Beach, going clockwise. Many stops were made during my almost 3hr hike including Cabbage Tree Bay, Shelly Beach, then following the Shelly Beach to Barracks Precinct Walk path, visited City Lookouts, Third Quarantine Cemetery, North Fort, Memorial Walk, and unfortunately North Head was closed during my visit early December even though the signage said construction until November.
Arriving at Q Station, I followed Scenic Drive which becomes Darley Road and walked all the way back to The Corso. Overall, it was enjoyable hike, got to see a different Sydney but remember to bring sunscreen, hat and water.
=TIPS=
• There are 2 ferries that go to Manly – one normal, cheaper and the other is the Manly Fast Ferry which is slightly more expensive and I think maybe 5 or 10 minutes faster than the normal ferry.
• There are signs throughout the hike but why not drop by the Information Centre just outside the Manly Wharf to have a chat to staff to find out more and also grab a map to see where you’re going?
• A short while after Shelly’s Beach, if you keep hiking up, you’ll come across a little gate with a sign that says no dogs. This is the gate you can go through to continue your hike. The guy at the Information Centre told me people are hesitant going through the gate but it’s open.

Spent a day at Manly Wharf and Beach. It was a fantastic day and experience. The waves were real good (between the lifeguard flags of course) for body surfing. There were currents pulling southwards but not too strong. Water temperature just right. Many good feasts around the area too! I strongly recommend (takeaway, battered) fish and chips with salt and vinegar or tartar sauce!

We took the regular (slower) ferry across from the main harbour and the express ferry back. They run very frequently and you can pay for this with your Sydney version of the oyster card, which typically costs $20 AUS and will cover about two ferry trips and a short ride on the monorail, good value. Manley is lovely, quite a picturesque main street leading from the ferry terminal to the principal beach. Lots of interesting bars and restaurants, lovely sand, clear water, not too much traffic. Quite busy but not crammed with people so it's just nice. well worth a run out from the city, even if just for the ferry trip across which is super. Do it, you won't be disppointed.

You can travel to Manly beach by taking a ferry from Circular Quay. Depending on if you have an Opal card or paying for a single ticket, a will cost you $5.65 to $9.40.
The journey to Manly wharf is nice and takes you past the Sydney Opera house.
Once you get to Manly wharf, it's about a 5 to 10 min walk to the beach past a number of food, souvenir, clothes and other shops.
The beach itself is beautiful smooth sand and warm water. There are life guards who duty. When I visited, they had the southern end set up for swimmers and the other areas for surfers. This was due to some strong rips on that day.
You can also hire some beach gear. Along the other side of the road, are eateries that you can sit at and enjoy the view.
I can imagine how busy this place can get on the weekends.
You could spend a lot of time here or just a couple of hours.

I booked 7 rooms and was not told that the Sebel Manly did not have 24 hour check in. My guests arrived to find a locked up hotel room and an answering service that would not provide the name and contact number of the duty manager. If this wasn't bad enough for a hotel that pretends to have an international standing, when my guests finally were able to check in one of them found their bed sheets covered with semen stains. Totally disgusted with the whole check in service.

I always love coming back here.
The beach is amazingly clean and the water clear as day.
It’s a great place to either chill or go mad in the water, there is something for all.
If you go away from the beach side rests you’ll find some great local family owned place with good quality and priced food.
It’s worth the trip from Sydney just to see this place and I would love to take my close friends from the UK here as it’s as good as the beaches in Hawaii

This beach is long and beautiful. Usually very busy during day time. If you are a traveller and like to see the beach rather than swim in it then just go to Manly at evening time. You will get to see the beach. Then you should return back after its dark to see the bautiful city lights in night. Or just go there in day time, drink and enjoy.

I don't know the answer to that question. We were just in Manly for the day.

Hi Jack,
It certainly is! It is very close to Circular Quay/center of the city (30 min with the iconic big Manly ferry and only 18 min with the fast ferry), relaxed and beautifully located (with not only the impressive Manly Beach but also a lot of smaller and more secluded beaches and amaaaazing scenic walks). There are around a 150 cafes and restaurants around Manly area, nice shops and boutiques and a variety of accommodation options.
You will LOVE it!
If you decide to stay in Manly please pop in a say hi to us at the Hello Manly Information Center located at the wharf. We can give you great tips about the area and help organize any trips or attractions you might be interested in :)
See you soon, Jack!

If staying in Sydney for 3-4 days where is the best place to stay close to beach? Is mainly beach good place to stay?

Manly Beach is an excellent location. In addition to the beach there are some great restaurants and bars and a whole coastline of beaches. The of Sydney is only 30 mins by ferry or 15 mins by fast ferry. Several great walks are around. The tourism office is at the wharf. Also have a beer/meal at the 4 Pines Brewery across from the wharf and or the 16’ Skiff Club.

We'll be visiting Sydney in early Nov, and are considering also staying several days in Manly. What neighborhoods would you recommend for cafes, not overly touristy and near beaches? Also, we would like to kayak. Beach recommendations?

The beauty of Sydney and it’s suburbs, is you can simply walk out of your hotel - and find little communities, neighbourhoods where all the locals are which have great cafes and dining options. It’s safe to say any hotel or Home you stay at - there is something nearby. Plus it’s the fun of exploring.
Manly has a great kayak hiring place on its wharf on the esplanade there - which would be a better area to kayak, as Bondi is a surf beach.
Enjoying!!

@Pat S. I am visiting Sydney at the end of the month and was wondering, did you book ferry tickets in advance or did you take a ferry over there spontaneously? I am also planning on visiting Taronga Zoo and I found a website that offers a combo pass on the manlyferry website. I am wondering only because we are vising during rainy season so we are unsure of whether or not to book things in advance such as zoo tickets, GBR diving, and harbor cruises due to daily changes in the weather.
Thanks!

The Manly ferry is worth the trip.
Come for the day, and have a sunset dinner over the wharf.
Bring your swimmers, as the water may still be warm for snorkeling.
Recommend bike hire to see more area, in a shorter amount of time.
Travel around Sydney can be done by purchasing an opal card at any transport station with a booth or newsagency. All trains, buses and public ferry’s are swipe on and off.
Zoo will be cheaper to pre-purchase. But you can do this on the day of travel from the Manly Information Centre, or booking booths at Circular Quay.

Hi..
I am visiting Sydney in last week of May. Would like to know which part of the day is good to visit beaches?
Will it be sunny throughout in Sydney?
Written May 13, 2017
It's beautiful anytime on Manly beach and Shelley beach. Weather should be OK we are still having sunny days and mild temperatures. Ride the ferry over from Circular Quay.

Anyone knows how much is the cab fee from Kingsford airport to manly?
Written June 26, 2016
Hi!
Taxi fare is estimated at approx $80 when you include tolls. Could be more if it is peak hour, or traffic delays.
Dependent on how many people are travelling with you, and amount of luggage, it is easier and cheaper to do public transport.
There is a train terminal under the airport, with a direct link to Circular Quay. Here you go jump straight onto the Manly Ferry or Fast Ferry.
Total travel time approx 45mins, cost $25.
FYI - Uber is now available from the airport if you'd like a private vehicle.
