Top ways to experience Sydney Opera House

The area

Address
Neighborhood: Central Business District
The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.

Miss Saigon at the Opera House
My husband and I saw Miss Saigon in the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Opera House. The production in this amazing space (seating capacity 1507) was second to none. I can’t imagine it being bettered anywhere else. The Opera House itself is an incredible building but seeing a show here was a dream come true. It’s expensive but worth it.
Dear guennie3, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us this 5 star review. We are thrilled that you enjoyed Miss Saigon in the Joan Sutherland Theatre and will be sure to pass on your fabulous comments to our friends at Opera Australia. We are so glad you had a once in a lifetime opportunity seeing a performance at the Sydney Opera House. Thank you again and we hope to welcome you back very soon. Kind Regards, Team SOH

    Icon of AU
This past month, on our way back from seeing our children in New Zealand, my wife and I stopped in Sydney for five days. My wife is an avid opera fan, and thanks to our good luck, we were able to purchase tickets at a price that was quite affordable for her favorite opera, Carmen. In addition to that, we participated in the pre-performance picnic, which had charcuterie, cheese, and sparkling wine. It was a delightful addition. The entire event was fantastic, despite the fact that the audience members were somewhat less well-behaved than one would generally anticipate and that there was some distracting chatter throughout the performance. Despite everything, I had a fantastic time, and it's definitely something I won't soon forget. The location of the opera house is breathtaking, and the structure itself is beautiful enough to warrant its place as an iconic landmark. In general, a night to look back on with fondness.
Hi Bethany G, Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review. We agree, our heritage listed building is an iconic landmark, breathtaking and beautiful! And we're so glad you enjoyed the entire experience with a pre-performance picnic and some bubbly. We are just a little confused by the location and timeline in your review, as Opera Australia's Carmen took place at Cockatoo Island late last year... But nevertheless, we are so glad that you had such a wonderful time, and sorry to hear about the chatterboxes who were sitting near you. Kind regards, Team SOH

    So beautiful
Visited on a sunny day - beautiful architecture! Underneath there are some cool bars and cafes. Free toilets and also the tickets for the performances aren’t too expensive so we’re looking forward to seeing Twelfth Night there in a few days time!
Dear Stay50852488426, Thank you for your review, we are so glad that you enjoyed your visit to the Sydney Opera House. We agree, the architecture is beautiful and the precinct sparkles on a sunny day! American architect Louis Kahn once said that 'the sun did not know how beautiful its light was, until it was reflected off this building.' We hope you enjoyed Twelfth Night and we hope to welcome you back one day! Kind regards, Team SOH

A testament to the power of design and creativity
Its gleaming Danish design has made it a symbol of cultural excellence and inspiration. From the moment you set eyes on it, you can feel the grandeur of the building and the possibilities it holds. Inside, you can experience world-class performances in a variety of genres, from opera to ballet to musicals. The building itself is a marvel of engineering, with a series of curved shells that are perfectly balanced and designed to capture the light and create an awe-inspiring atmosphere.
Dear meioestreichv, Thank you for leaving this wonderful review of your visit to the Sydney Opera House! I agree, this is a magnificent building and I'm glad you appreciated the high-quality and wide variety of performances we host here. Thank you for visiting and we hope to welcome you back to the House again one day. Kind regards, Team SOH

    Magnificent 'sails', Iconic Sydney
Walked the whole perimeter of the Opera House, Sydney's famous & iconic building. Magnificent 'sails' of the Opera House gleaming in the sunshine - just awe-inspiring. Enjoyed Harbour Bridge impressive views. On Manly ferry, had different stunning vistas from the ocean back towards the Opera House, also gorgeous dusk photos. We haven't been to Sydney in a long while - now revisit; we'll definitely be back soon.. (I have gait/walking challenges (stroke), wear a legbrace.)
Dear jacquitohc, Thank you for your lovely review. Welcome back to Sydney. We are so glad that you enjoyed your visit to the Sydney Opera House. We couldn't agree more it is awe-inspiring! Walking around the outside and then seeing it from a ferry gives you the opportunity to see it in all its glory from all different perspectives it's almost impossible to take a bad photo! We look forward to welcoming you back soon, perhaps to see a performance. Kind regards, Team SOH.

Exceptional acoustics and seating, lousy management
My wife and I and another couple were lucky enough to get the last few seats available for the Chinese National Symphony Orchestra tour at the Sydney Opera House. We sat in what would normally be the choir loft, but let me tell you they were superb seats. I wish other venues would make the effort to put seats there like Sydney Opera House does. The only down side is the restrooms are on the ground level and it’s quite a walk from the choir loft to get there. The concert was supposed to start at 2030, but didn’t till 2045 because they wouldn’t open the seating gates till 2015. No way you can seat that many people in 15 minutes. The concession stands didn’t open till 2020, causing more people to be late.
Dear JohnWMillsIII, Thank you for your valuable feedback! We agree that those seats in the choir loft are wonderful seats, especially when an orchestra is playing as you'll be facing the conductor. Unfortunately, in a heritage building like the Sydney Opera House it is very hard to make structural changes which make the nearest bathrooms from where you were seated a 5-minute walk to the main Box Office level. During our last renovations more bathrooms were fitted, however the location did not change. As for the opening of the 'seating gates' at 20:15, the Front of House staff need to wait for 'permission to open the House' which is given when the hirer (in this case the Chinese National Symphony Orchestra) is ready. As this was a visiting orchestra from overseas; they might have needed a little more time than usual. We hope you enjoyed your visit and look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. Warm Regards, Team SOH

    Wow!
We took an hour tour of the Sydney Opera House yesterday and we are enchanted! The guide was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate about the history and the architecture, knew the inside and out of theatre, concert and opera techniques, sounds producing, acoustics and set up. We learned so much about this fabulous landmark!!! I rarely had such an enjoyable time taking a tour. It was supposed to be a small group (we were 35 to 40!), but it did not matter. Our guide answered all the questions, we entered 4 venues, including the concert hall and the opera hall. We just loved it!
Dear lynnb509, Thank you for your lovely review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your tour and visit to the Sydney Opera House. We couldn't agree more, our tour guides are world-class and their knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for our iconic landmark is just contagious. We hope to welcome you back soon, perhaps for a performance. Kind regards, Team SOH

We did the tour of the Sydney Opera House and were thrilled by the insights provided of the building process and the visit to three of the six concert halls. Well worth the money. We then booked one of the events, songs for nobodies, and received a 50% reduction for the ticket fee because we had been on a tour. The pack of pictures taken were outstanding. We never normally accept these package photograph packs but these were outstay

While in Sydney recently, we arranged a "tour package" at the famed Sydney Opera House. This started with a late afternoon tour of the Opera House, visiting several of the performing venues, backstage areas and public concourses with a thorough presentation on the design and building process. The Opera House is an iconic building which truly merits the praise it has received. After the very interesting tour, we had dinner at the Opera Bar with a choice of three possible dishes. We each had the steak which was excellent, even if it wasn't one of the prime cuts of beef. OUr package concluded with tickets to a performance. They have operas on a rotational basis every night they're open, but they also have other types of shows. We chose to have tickets for the musical "Six" which is about the six wives of Henry VII, though it uses very contemporary music to have each wife present their story. I had seen this show in London, England a year previously but my wife hadn't and I thought she would enjoy it. The production in Sydney was possibly even better than the one I had seen in London's West End. Overall this was a great visit and one I would heartily recommend to anyone visiting Sydney.

Dear Paul Z, Thank you for taking the time to leave us this wonderful feedback. We're delighted to hear that you had such a comprehensive Sydney Opera House experience, taking in a tour, a meal and a show, and by the sounds of things you and your wife enjoyed each chapter. You crafted a perfect package for yourself, so perhaps the only possible addition to improve things even further would be to see our Badu Gili light show. This is a free light projection onto the Bennelong sails of the Opera House that runs for seven minutes a few times each night and showcases indigenous artists. Perhaps you can save that for next time! We hope to see you again soon. Kind Regards, Team SOH

Just barely pre-COVID, we spent five days in Sydney. We bought tickets to see the opera, Carmen, months before because...Sydney Opera House. It worked out that we were booked for a backstage tour earlier that day, so we picked up our tickets while we there.

The tour was fantastic. Our guide was knowledgeable and so helpful. He managed to get the headphones working for two members of our group who had hearing problems, His insights on the architecture, history and politics were witty and entertaining.

The building is beautiful but the seats we had were very uncomfortable. With nearly a foot difference in height, both of us were uncomfortable. The acoustics were wonderful, even detrimentally so, as one of the leads had quite a screeching voice. We decided to leave at the interval and spent quite a while sitting outside of the opera house, enjoying the harbour lights, the parade of life around us, and the wonderful balmy night. It was quite magical.

Other companions on the tour discovered that they could reserve seats to the opera and got a fabulous deal on seats for the next night. I think they could choose from any available seats in the house for $99, which meant they saved about $300 on the seats they got! They also decided to have the set meal and raved about the food. We had decided to go to one of the outdoor restaurants along the esplanade and thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered there. Frankly, we couldn’t get enough of the views and the atmosphere.

The opera house is a world icon and we'll worth the trip to view onsite. The one hour tour hosted by the opera house is well worth the time and money as you get to see the opera house inside and out. Our guide Danny did a great job as he told us the history and inner workings of the theater. You also get discounted prices on most purchases after the tour to include the restaurant and bar, both of which have great food and service.

You can pay for a tour to see more inside and hear of the history. Buying a ticket to see something is also a great way to see inside and experience such a famous iconic building. I was amazed that there was a cost to see inside the Paris Opera House and wanted to remind people that you can go inside the Sydney one for free and use their toilets for free but there are lots of free toilets to use in Sydney so that doesn't really seem as special here. You also can't see as much inside as you used to unless you have a ticket or a tour.
The entry is either from the low level or middle... if you walk up to the top, those doors are closed so you'll need to walk back down again but it's still good at the top for a photo.

‘Ello chaps!

Few buildings in the world are as famous as the Sydney Opera House. Located on the southern point of the Sydney Harbour, it is impossible to miss.

Taking a stroll through the large royal gardens or come from the dock side, there is much to see around the Opera House itself. Many people like to climb the steps and take a quick peek inside. NOTE: You can only really get to the heart of the inside of the opera house by taking a ticketed tour or seeing a ticketed show. Beyond that it’s still possible to go inside and get a taste of what the interior architecture is like. There’s also a fancy restaurant on site giving you stunning views of the downtown city and of the harbour.

The building was formally opened October 20, 1973 by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. There are multiple performance venues inside, which combined provide space for more than 1,500 performances annually, attended by 1.2 million people per year.
It is a build that truly impresses in person and in photos.

Overall I give Sydney Opera House five stars out of five.

Really don’t bother with this patronising tour unless you have never been inside a theatre and know nothing about the performing arts . Yes the building is interesting inside, but the outside is better and there is nothing you are told on this tour you can’t find out on the internet - and our guide, who gushed like a poor primary school teacher, knew precious little about opera, even saying there were five operas in Wagner’s Ring Cycle. The guide seemed more interested in selling tickets for less popular shows than in providing any insight into the building. Save your money and put it towards seeing an opera or ballet on the main stage.

We were unable to enter the Opera House, but walked around it caught ferries to see all sides of it, and looked at it from the window of our hotel in Circular Quay. Originally the cost of building the Opera House infuriated the people of NSW, but now everyone recognises the genius of the Danish architect.

Mind you, I've read that the main theatre inside is not really suited for performances of opera! The stage is too small and the wings and fly space above the stage lack space. As a consequence,Opera Australia has to make sets fit the Sydney venue but they are too small for Melbourne's State Theatre. That's what trying to cut costs does!

Dear nocatnow, Thank you for taking the time to leave us your review of your recent visit. We're pleased to hear that you were able to take in the Opera House from every angle. We always recommend viewing it from every side and at different times of the day to really appreciate it's true majesty. The reason we have a smaller opera theater than most is actually down to a little last minute design change. During the creation it was decided that the Opera House would house just one main hall that was to be multipurpose and could facilitate classical concerts as well as Opera, however, at the last minute it was decided that classical music should take precedent due to it's popularity at the time, whilst Opera should be relegated to a smaller and newly created theatre. We hope to you will come and visit us again soon. Kind regards, Team SOH

We had a great tour guide. She was very knowledgeable and friendly. She also took us into a theatre where they were rehearsing for one of their upcoming shows. At the conclusion of our tour, some individuals in our group were able to purchase tickets for a show that evening that is normally sold out. We returned to the Opera House at sunset to view the Badu Gili Water Light display that was projected on the eastern Bennelong sail. This was available twice a night with the first one at sunset. It was a free experience and very well done. I am not sure if this was just being offered while we visited in February or if it’s available year round. Check with the Opera House to obtain the viewing times.

The place is a must visit. You don't really need a tour guide to take you around the place. You can just go and see the beauty free of cost. I would recommend the best time to go is at dusk when the sun is setting and the night just kicks on. You get to see how this beauty stands at both the sunlight and the moon light.

Dear singhShivy, Thank you for your wonderful review! You're absolutely right, dusk is a great time to come to the Sydney Opera House. At that time you can see the sunset over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the orange hues of twilight are reflected of the sails, and our indigenous light show is projected on Bennelong Sail. Everyone is more than welcome to wander through our Box Office foyers to see our internal architecture. However, if you would like to see the architecture in our theatres then a tour of the Sydney Opera House is a must! See you again soon. Kind regards, Team SOH
