Info about this attraction is misleading because it is normally FREE unless there is a special exhibition included in your tour, e.g. the Archibald prize entrants in May. On our visit we enjoyed a guided free tour of about 45 minutes, brunch in the Cafe, and bought some souvenirs in the comprehensive gift shop. It was a Monday, but very busy and oh so noisy with lots of school groups. Apart from the guided tour, the noise cacophony bouncing off parquentry floors and hard surfaces was very unpleasant. Some soothing music through noise-cancelling headphones would have provided a much more relaxing experience to go with the wonderful art and sculptures on display. Did love the Australian masterpieces though - Tom Roberts, McCubbin, John Glover, Streeton, Boyd, Dobell, etc, and a few of the Archibald Prize winners that are permanently on display such as Dobell's Margaret Olley. Will be back......but next time possibly with one of those golf tourament signs to hold up which says Quiet Please!!

A huge collection. Walking from the botanical gardens behind the Opera House, you can enjoy beautiful views of the seaside and greenery as you arrive at the new building (annex). This building was designed by a duo of Japanese architects (SANAA), and you'll feel the same style as the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, which was also designed by SANAA. Both the annex and main building are beautiful buildings, but the artworks are also huge, including contemporary art, Aboriginal art, and art from all over the world, not just Australia. There are also some Japanese works in the main building's collection. While there is a fee for some of the special exhibitions, most can be enjoyed for free (this really shows the dignity and depth of Sydney's cityscape). If you take your time looking around, you could easily spend a whole day just here.

This is a beautiful gallery. So much to look at and admire and I loved that they put a lot of art work together to maximise your viewing rather than have to walk far between installations. There is a mix of old masters, contemporary and Aboriginal works often in the same place which I really liked the juxtaposition of. In the grand courts which is the original building they hung the paintings off hanging rails in some spaces which makes sense to protect the historic walls. I hadn’t seen this in a gallery before. My favourite was Michael Parekowhai’s huge statue of Captain Cook which I’d seen before in Auckland (probably I’m biased being a kiwi but it’s fabulous!) It’s open every day which is great as some galleries/museums close on either Monday or Tuesday. We only spent an hour or so as I had hubby with me who was less of an art fan and it was almost lunchtime. We didn’t make it to the newer seperate building but hopefully will be back again next year.

This is probably the best museum for Western Art in Asia. Of course you cannot use the same standard as the Met or the Louvre to benchmark against. But this is most definitely a very well curated and laid out museum with an eclectic display of art covering many genres. It beats many second tier museums in Europe. It is a very good use of 2-3 hours to visit both the North and South galleries. Best of all, entry is free of charge. The surrounding environment in the Botanic Gardens is SK a bonus. Kudos to the NSW government for making this free and maximising enjoyment for all.

This gallery is free to visit and feels like Sydney’s principal art museum. The Grand Courts galleries contain lots of large formate pictures from the 19th century, mostly from Australia and England. The gallery was buying art in the 1800s and somehow managed to buy paintings mostly from European and British artists who have been forgotten. Bad luck. There is a great Cezanne; good Monet, Whistler and Pissarro. In the art gallery’s early days, the focus seems to have been on acquiring pre Raphaelites and they did buy some great ones if that’s your thing. More interesting to me was the paintings from Australian artists, most of whom were new to me and very nice to see. The European old masters fit into a few galleries and were nice enough if not especially great; I suspect this is the only collection of old masters in Sydney so it’s nice that the gallery gives some space where people can learn about art history. Good Bronzino, good Moroni and a great Reynolds. The 20th century modern galleries were uneven but there are nice paintings by Modigliani and a great Bacon. The Asian collection seemed weak but the Yiribana galleries for aboriginal art seemed impressive. The building is lovely and stately. The new addition is impressive. And best of all it’s free!

I would double check the hours and make sure that this isn’t just the spring thing, but what a treat to wander around the art gallery at night! And I don’t know if this is common on every Wednesday night, but they let us eat in the members’ cafeteria. What’s to love? Big spacious rooms that allow for large format pieces. The museum showcases Australian art as well as international art. The building itself is impressive. Wonderful older architecture. Two buildings to explore: Naala Badu (north building) and Naala Nura (south building). Don’t miss the exterior sculptures! Did I mention they were open until 10 PM on Wednesdays? And that they have spots for buying champagne and wine?
Thank you so much for your review! We are indeed open until 10pm every Wednesday night throughout the year. We call these nights "Art After Hours" and alongside the pop up bars we often have free weekly programming of music, talks, cinema and more. Hope you can make it back soon!

This is overall a good gallery, but not without exception. Their curators' labelling needs urgent attention. The name of Australia's near neighbour is New Zealand, not Aotearoa New Zealand. Who are they to incorrectly name another nation? If New Zealand were to formally change its name, then this would be acceptable, but no such change has taken place. This led me to question the accuracy of all information provided about artists' pieces. Not good enough.

We went to the new section of the art gallery Naala Badu (North Building). There were multiple free workshops on for kids for Hive as part of Sydney Festival. There are some wonderful exhibitions which we all enjoyed and brunch in Mod dining. The workshops our grand-daughter sampled included Shadow house, Dreaming on the Picnic blanket and flight of fancy. Best transport option is the Met train to Martin Place and walk via domain. Tip some of the workshop activities start at 9am (before the standard 10am opening) get there early and enjoy those before it gets crowded.

A great museum with a lot to see, and it's completely free. From famous painters like Vincent van Gogh to modern art, everything is there. Open until 10 p.m. on Wednesdays. I can definitely recommend it and I would plan at least 2 hours.

Really interesting for all the ages. A big deal also because it's free! Great museum, with all types of art, from the classic to the modern. A must see in Sydney, good to spend an afternoon when it's raining.

The highlight of the gallery right now is the Matisse exhibition, ‘Life & Spirit’ with over 100 works on loan from the Pompidou Centre, Paris.
It is worth noting that a large chunk of the gallery, including the Grand Courts, is not open to the public at the moment. The gallery is undergoing large-scale renovation and re-design works. Unfortunately this leaves a big gap in your visit to the gallery. However the Matisse exhibition is wonderful.
The works cover 6 decades and cover such a range of styles and topics, with such dramatic and vibrant colour. Perhaps the best part is the Chapel of the Rosary room. A confirmed atheist, Matisse collaborated on the chapel project with two Dominican friars and nuns, later in life when he was in 70s.
Before you leave, take some extra time to go down the escalators to see the free ‘Matisse Alive’ exhibition. Whilst you won’t see any works by Matisse himself, you’ll see a display of paintings, video and collage by 4 contemporary artists who were inspired by Matisse. It’s an interesting addition to the main show.
TIPS:
* Entry to the Gallery is free but the Matisse Exhibition is $30 ($25 for members) . NSW Dine & Discover vouchers can be used. I didn’t think of this until too late, but they can only be used by buying your ticket at the gallery and cannot be used if booking online.
* It finishes 13 March 2022.
* Make sure to ask for the free booklet and audio at the very start of the exhibition. They are easily missed and I had to double back for one when I realised that I’d overlooked it.
* If your timing if right, you can join the free guided tour which runs daily 11.30am & 2pm (except weekends in March). Evening tours are held Wed 5.30 & 7pm.

We visited here based on reviews and something different to do, and it was free. The audio guide was a bust-worked on first item but never again-Wi-Fi kept dropping off and no cell service so it was useless. We enjoyed the first gallery with older paintings but that was about it.

Thank you for visiting the Art Gallery. We're glad you enjoyed the older paintings in Naala Nura and appreciate your feedback on improving the experience with the audio guide and wi-fi and will work on enhancing this for future visitors.

Came here recently for an Art Treasure Hunt with a group of friends. So many wonderful galleries to look through and enjoy. Wonderful pieces of art works hanging on the walls including modern art pieces/sculptures. Free entry for most of the gallery and some special exhibitions are ticketed. Visit the Art Gallery Restaurant for a coffee or bite for lunch and don't miss visiting the Gallery shop. All in all a very inspiring place to visit. Make sure you leave a good 2-3 hours to spend here.

There wasn’t one artwork that I would consider a masterpiece or think I want to come and see this again. I searched for hidden gems and found none. Even the European galleries seemed filled out with artists I hadn’t heard of. The diversity quotient and wallpaper art was at a very high level. Contrast this gallery with Melbourne where hidden gems abound and curated interesting displays drew the viewer in.

We visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales on Sunday May 14th when it opened at 10 am to view the Archibald 2023 prize exhibition (which I found out is also the Wynne and Sulman prizes). We purchased tickets (though the queuing for that was odd as there were no clear entry and exit points) and was able to immediately enter the exhibition. The first room was very busy so we jumped ahead and then came back to it. Sometimes we missed the winners because you have to read the signs carefully. The Young Archibald paintings were also incredible. We had time at the end to view the older Australian artists' painting. such as Streeton, Fox, etc. I am glad I visited here as when the Archibald exhibition comes to Victoria it is only on display in one regional museum.

Went here in early May to see the Archibald 2023. Even though we had to queue in a long line before seeing the exhibit it moved very quickly. There were soo many amazing artworks, (some painted by famous people & some of famous people) all vying one of several art prizes in offer; The Packing Room, Wynne, Sulman & the Archibald prizes. There were also many artworks hoping to win the Young Archibald Prize. You can spend several hours looking at the amazing artworks. There is also a cafe where you can grab a bite to eat or a drink, as well as a gift shop full of lovely gifs.

Regular visitor to the Art Gallery for cafe lunch & then paid exhibitions and shop. Liked the new sections that opened not so long ago in the old building. Today, visited the brand new North Wing. Ugh. A triumph of glass, empty spaces, paid eateries and long escalators. Whilst I enjoyed the new Aboriginal exhibition space & outdoor floral artwork, I do hope going forward this new wing is filled with more ART because at present it feels like a very expensive multi floor empty glasshouse.

I usually visit when in Sydney, on my latest, longer than usual, trip, I finally got to see the entirety of this enormous place.
The Matisse exhibition, which is now closed, was fantastic but very crowded despite the timed entry system (which is fair enough, there are now no state government capacity limits).
The free temporary exhibitions were good too, they were all contemporary, which I liked (contemporary art isn't for everyone though, and if you are a fan there are better contemporary art places in Sydney).
The permanent collection had a few great pieces (an early Van Gogh, an interesting Canaletto, and quite a few pre-Raphaelites) but was generally not terribly interesting.
The cafe was, for a museum cafe, very good.
The location is very inconvenient, I don't think it's worth making the long walk here unless you plan to stay at least a few hours.
Masks and vaccines certificates are not required, about 3/4s of visitors were wearing masks.
The online ticketing system (for the paid exhibitions) is easy to use, so you can skip the queue, without committing to a fixed time in advance, by buying your ticket on your phone whilst in the lobby.

Our first visit since the new north wing was opened. Can't say we enjoyed the new building overly much although the three giant bronzes in the courtyard were rather fun. As for the main gallery; brilliant as always. A splendid exterior with many fine spaces. The eclectic mix of paintings and sculptures from the 19th century to contemporary pieces offers something for everyone. We were particularly taken by a number of fine works by Victorian and Edwardian women artists previously unkown to us. If you have any interest in art of any period this fine gallery is well worth a couple of hours of your time.

The Mucha exhibition was extremely disappointing. It was so dark in many of the rooms that I stopped trying to see the art and read the information. Quickest gallery visit ever- cause I couldn't see it! What a wasted flight from QLD to Sydney to see Mucha again, after having seen his work in Prague when I was backpacking. The lady at the door said that I was not the first person to ask why the lighting was so poor. Really badly done.
