Never found such expensive place with hardly anything to see or mostly boring. Most of the population is elderly and that reflects in the style of this area. Have seen a few specialists and they were most entitled and overly expensive. Southern Highlands terrible value for money. Cold climate and just not a vibrant but gloomy area. Not worth spending your money and time

These tours are for people who want a taste of countrylife just for one day in one of New South Wales most beautiful areas, the Southern Highlands. Get to taste fresh local produce, pick fruit and chestnuts when in season, and speak first hand with farmers. See how a modern dairy works, how gourmet potatoes are grown and learn how to bottle fruit. Driving down lovely country roads and lanes, you enter some of the many farming properties abound in this area. Jill and Nick are your hosts who conduct these most informative tours.

We traveled from Sydney out to the Southern Highlands. Our destination was the Joadja Creek Heritage site but there is so much to see on the way there. We stopped at McVitty winery on the way out there for lunch and it was fabulous with an amazing view. The entire countryside is stunning and so worth the trip out from Sydney. We will be back to explore more.
Don't miss out on:

The drive out there does seem like you are driving out to the middle of nowhere but don't get discouraged. It is 100% worth it. It is great for adults and kids and the proprietors are a delight.
Here is where we had lunch. Be sure to call ahead for a reservation. The view from the restaurant is stunning.

This is easily accessed from Sydney by car. Its 120km away and allows you about 3.5 hours excluding stops.
Its Australian high country and coastal hinterland, interlaced with hills and valleys, waterfalls and streams, quaint villages, cosy restaurants, antique shops and elegant places to stay.
The tour takes in spectacular Seven Mile Beach and the pretty town of Berry, before heading to Kangaroo valley, sleepy bundanoon and the antique shops of Berrima and Bowral. You will find Minnamurra Falls an exhilarating treat, with its boardwalk through the rainforest.
Seven Mile beach is a beach flanked by dunes and hardy coastal vegetation, including forest and swamp. its an ideal spot for swimming, fishing and picnicking.
Berry is a town surrounded by dairy country, known for its main street lined with shady trees , antique and craft shops, tea rooms and historic buildings
kangaroo Valley is idyllic for canoeing and has a lovely castellated suspension bridge called Hampden Bridge. Lovely for trails and walks.
Fitzroy falls plunge 80 mt into the subtropical rainforest below. The falls has access to disabled and contains spectacular views and good walks.
Bundanoon Has romantic guesthouses and a glow worm cave which makes this a very popular destination.
Berrima is the only georgian village in the highlands. It is without a shadow of a doubt, the most picturesque.
Bowral holds a famous tulip festival every year and is home to cricket's Bradman Museum. Lovely town with ye old world charm.

Went to the southern highlands with 3 girlfriends, and stayed in the tiny little town of Wingello. We went wine tasting and explored other towns in the area. A beautiful part of NSW, and a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of Sydney.

Wow plenty of places to explore for all the family, gardens with a WOW even the teen's loved this, Bradman's the pools, quaint little shopping through out the whole Highlands. A great place to eat and explore local produce, cooking and tasting. Always something on during the week or weekend. Close by train service to get you around if no transport. Will be back again.

I had read quite a few tourist sites that said how lovely and quaint the little towns through the southern highlands were but unfortunately I was a little disappointed as I drove from Sydney to Canberra. We stopped at Mittagong, Berrima, Bowral and Goulburn.
Berrima did have some lovely old buildings and a few shops but not a lot. Bowral had some nice houses and gardens and lots of coffee shops. We visited the Don Bradman museum which was interesting but expensive at $20 per person, but I assume they are self funded.
Maybe I just stopped at the wrong towns.

We decided to spend a few days in the southern highlands over the Easter break as we hadn't been down there for a few years.
We stayed at Sutton Forest, in a lovely historic place called Hilllview Heritage Hotel. While we loved the accommodation, the area was a let down in several ways.
Firstly, there was next to nothing restaurant wise open on Monday or Tuesday evenings. Given it was Easter Monday (but also school holidays) but, on checking various restaurant opening hours, it seems to be a regular thing that they close on these days. As this area has a reputation for being a tourist destination, we found this intriguing (and also annoying). The only places open were in Bowral and consisted of 2 pubs, a rather average looking Thai restaurant and 2 pizza places. Oh, and the very expensive, Katers Restaurant. Most places are only open for lunch and mainly in week ends.
The other thing we noticed was that the village atmosphere, again which the area is renowned for, has been completely destroyed. The previously quaint towns of Bowral, Mittagong and Moss Vale are pretty much Sydney suburbs now - new housing developments = more shops like Subway and Kmart=more people = less atmosphere. The message is, if you want quaint, stick to Berrima-forget the rest.
Berrima is still quaint and worth a wander. Don't expect antique shops though-there is only 1 and that was closed. There are other signs in the town advertising antique shops but they are either closed down or full of new wares. The lovely old historic Australian manor on the hill was closed too and only open on week ends.
So, the message is, folks, if you visit the Southern Highlands, make sure you on on a Saturday or Sunday otherwise, most attractions, and restaurants, are closed.

The Southern Highlands is a region south of Sydney full of wonderful surprises, little towns, villages, farms, parks, and coastal beauty. Travel inland and the traveler will pass vineyards, quaint homes, and lovely trees. Make it a day trip or in our case we did a five day road trip. We could have stayed longer. This is a wonderful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city scene.
