I didn't visit the museum but I did take a trip on the Beyer-Garratt 6029 steam train that visited the central west of NSW. This is the largest operating steam locomotive in the Southern Hemisphere. This train is housed in the Canberra Railway Museum and I am sure you can view it there. If this train pulls into a station... More

Sunday morning with young family. Enthusiastic staff. Very small collection of railway memorabilia inside. A handful of various train carriages from the past century that could be boarded and viewed as well as two diesel engines. No steam engines on display unfortunately as that was the primary interest in going. Cheap enough and kept the children happy for the morning.

We went to the museum expecting it to be bigger than what it was! It is all run by volunteers and I would presume a tight budget. The trains you could go in were really good - well done to the volunteers who are restoring them! The volunteers who were there were very nice and helpful! We enjoyed it just... More

The Canberra Railway Museum is the home of the mighty 6029 Beyer Garrett which has been brilliantly restored to running order by the volunteers. While this is a fantastic effort and was undoubtly a huge financial commitment by the museum, there needs to be a plan for the remaining exhibits.

This was a terrible waste of time and money. Nothing to see, nothing to do. Terrible food. One steam train running backwards on the track. The main attraction, the mighty Garrett was not fired up and was parked so no pics could be taken of it with ugly temporary steps in front of it. The cabin was so crowded hardly... More

Having spent a great day with friends in Canberra visiting the War Memorial we decided to go the railway museum ,entry was $10 per adult once in side there was nothing much to see ,yes you climb on board the Garrett but that was it , ok for little kids on the miniature railway . Food well that was terrible... More

So you thought it was going to be a 70 min steam train trip to Queenbeyan.... Wrong! 30 minutes at least spent shuffling slowly forward, stopping and waiting. Then reverse back to the beginning where you started from. No explanation or advance warning was given by the operators. Then you start up again only to find that the actual trip... More

Very disappointing experience, failed to meet the hype or expectations. Compared to similar museums was found to be lacking in exhibits available for perusal or access. For a special weekend it just didn't offer value for money for rail enthusiasts.

A small place in Canberra, the old station and museum-y stuff inside is teensy and adorable! The cool stuff is the sweet old train cars you get to walk through and explore. A great variety of old train cars from the 1800s to the 1970s are yours to appreciate. Pro tip - you can enter the train car barn and... More

This is a great way for big boys to spend some time in Canberra. Although I must say I am not a boy, but I certainly enjoyed this railway museum. The young guide was thorough with his knowledge & the volunteer restores were extremely friendly. This was a little gem.
