The High Court sits in an impressive building on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. The High Court is Australia's supreme court, it rules on important cases, including cases relating to the Australian Constitution. It is usually possible to gain entry to the courtroom.

The High Court is the most important court in Australia. Its most important role is to decide on questions of constitutional law. The building is impressive, you may be able to have a look around when the Court is not sitting. It is also the final court of appeal on criminal matters.

We were fascinated during our visit to the High Court - including our teenagers! On arrival, we met a staff member who was available in the foyer to provide information about the Court if we wanted it. We were invited to sit in a court room and listen to a staff member as he made a presentation to a visiting school group, including examples of cases explained in a way visitors could easily understand. From what I can see, there are no scheduled public tours, but staff are available to engage with you when you visit. We wished we had more time there to look at the Australian Constitution Centre on site. An impressive building, friendly staff, and convenient (paid) parking. Thank you to the staff for a wonderful visit.

One of Canberra’s best kept visitor secrets. We were not sure if the building was open for visitors but were able to enter and listen to the talk by the guide in Court 1-excellent and informative. Free entry. There is also an Info Centre about the Constitution but this was closed. Great way to spend an hour. Next door to the Portrait Gallery and close walk to Old Parliament House (when it reopens).

Friends in Canberra told me to go visit. Court was in session with full bench in Court 1 and I was able to go in and watch it in action. Especially interesting that the judges were all over the law and nailed the barrister a couple times wiht some very detailed questions on specific things. Had a long chat with of the staff upstairs and she provided a lot of information on the courts and the building.

A spare of the moment thing, just completed the Lake cruise near by.
Free entry.
It was open with a tour guide.

We didn't really expect much when visiting, but to our surprise we had 2 free tours which explained the High Court in very interesting terms. The visit was fairly short but a great way to finish our day of sightseeing. Try it - you will be pleasantly surprised.

The building itself is 42 years old and still impressive sitting on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. We did not go inside but with extra planning should have.

If you're a parent hoping to give your child a bit of education on there trip to Canberra, I recommend the High Court. And all for one reason... His name is Cecil. He's the tour guide in court room 2. He is charming, polite and has a way with children. I went with my family which included my niece's and nephews of ages 4-16. All naturally groaned and moaned at the thought of the high Court but after some Cecil charm they admitted to having a good time.

The acoustics in this building is impressive. The cafe has wonderful views. Worth a stroll through or to sit in Court Room 1.
