The lake is the heart of Canberra and whether you are into fitness -hire a bike walk run- or relaxing it has somuch to offer. Sit at regatta point on the hill and take it all in while the captain cook fountain erupts or go to the yacht club on south shore for a drink and food. walk over and around the bridges is a beautiful walk. Its all good. just dont go swimming in winter.

We've visited Canberra numerous times but never really stopped to enjoy the lake or stroll around it's foreshore, until now. It won't be our last stroll either. It was so relaxing, so nice to chill out and enjoy a calming break. I think next we'll have a picnic and stay longer.

The lake is quite stunning and the central part of Canberra is positioned around the waters. Everyone seems to be drawn to it with walkers, cyclists and electric scooters all making use of the tracks. We rode our bikes around the 28km circumference which took about 2.5 hrs and was a relatively easy ride for beginners with a couple slightly hilly sections at the far Western end of the lake but still doable. There is plenty of bird life and so many spots to stop and visit sights and galleries etc as well as plenty of spaces for picnics everywhere. A truly magnificent lake. We even saw the New Year’s Eve fireworks which were held on the lake and that too was spectacular.

Kids tool their scooters while we walked around the lake, wide path all the way round the lake. Beautiful scenery, lake one side park on the other. Worth going for a stroll and checking it out.

We had a stroll along the lake near the High Court and NGA while we were waiting for the NGA to open. It's a beautiful lake. We discovered some wonderful outdoor sculptures at the back of the NGA on the lake side

Lake Burley Griffin is a man-made lake in the centre of the national capital, created by damming the Molongolo River. The lake dates from 1963, I saw to as a child before it had filled up. Lake Burley Griffin provides a scenic backdrop for many of Canberra's imposing monumemtal structures. Walter Burley Griffin was an American town planner and architect who provided the layout for the national capital. Unfortunatelty, his plans were not always followed. By the way, you can take a cruise on Lake Burley Griffin, it's quite illuminating.

Every time we drove past the lake we would check to see if the 'fountain' was operating. Once it was we drove to free-park by the lake and just relaxed on the lawns watching people cycling and walking around the lake. Given Canberra is not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing place in the nation and other cities would better qualify as the nation's capital, this man-made lake is a nice place to while away the time. And the fountain is quite an impressive jet!

Lake Burley Griffin is quite beautiful to look at and to walk around. The walking/scooter path on the Capital side of the lake is a lovely outing.
To see the lake from above, head to either the Mt Ainslie Lookout or up to the Telstra Tower.

Very pretty area but the parking costs are horrendous in the main area of the lake. Lots of concrete paths for walking or cycling, (which hold heat), and way too much construction going on. Grassed areas are well maintained, and besides construction, the area foreshore is kept clean, unlike the lake water.

To get from any part of Canberra to another the lake is always visible. There are a number of bridges that transverse the lake and it contains a wide walking path along the shoreline. There are a number of fountains within and even some paddle boats to hire.

Hi - where did you hire the paddle boats from in Canberra?
Written November 24, 2016
The Southern Cross Yacht club is where we hire catamarans for the day.
Sadly Mr. Spokes bike and paddle boat hire was closed earlier this year . The ACT government bought out the business for residential development. It was the end to one of Canberra's iconic attractions.
I have a tried a Google search, but to no avail.Canberra is a beautiful city, just a little understated and under estimated.

We are going to Canberra with our aged parents next week. I am wondering whether there is any motorised scooters that I could rent for my Dad for use at the lake. Thank you

I am not sure about scooter hire around Lake Burley Griffin but there are hire shops in Canberra where you can hire mobility scooters for long or short term rent. One is called The Wheelchair Factory. I can't endorse the business because I haven't used them. They are not too far from Lake Burley Griffin but you will still need a car to get from the shop to the lake. I hope this helps. Enjoy your stay in Canberra. It is a beautiful city. Be sure to go to Questacon.

Hi. Traveling down in 3 weeks with teenagers. I believe there is a Segway tour you can do around the lake parliamentary buildings. Can anybody offer any feedback or advice about this Segway tour. Sounds ideal for teenagers as well as adults. Thank you.

Hi,
Yes, there is a Segway tour. It leaves from Queen Elizabeth Terrace, between Questacon and the National Gallery. The company (Canberra Segway Experience) has a website - it's worth checking for minimum age, weight range, etc. My kids haven't been on it, as they are too young, but the shoreline track is great, so I guess the Segway ride would be a lot of fun.

I've seen the Segway tours start down at the edge of Lane Burley Griffen. They always do a practise before getting started. Looks great. On the Acton side of the lake there is a bike hire place which may work well if your teens are up for exploring other parts of the lake.

Hi, is there parking near the lake
Written June 12, 2015
A lot more than there used to be now they have introduced pay parking in the Parliamentary Triangle. Short term parking with a lot more choice. Best spot as others have indicated is on the southside around where the National Gallery, Questacon and High Court are.
