Fantastic
Apr 2021
Fantastic service from the server who went out of his way to bring us drinks and food. We had some very nice and very big plates of ploughmans from their sister pub The Chancery. With a seat outside in the sun in their garden area we had a lovely time.

Worth a visit
Apr 2019
My wife and I popped in for a Bank Holiday afternoon pint.
Lovely unspoilt pub with a decent range of ales - Harvey’s Best, Seafarer, Landlord, Black Sheep. Fine selection of gins and whiskeys too.
An enjoyable lack of music being played allowed us to have a conversation - always a bonus.
Toilets are in the garden and well presented.
Nice range of books on the mantelpiece above the fireplace.
We were made to feel welcome. We’ve passed this pub many times on the bus but finally got the chance to visit. Glad we did.

Jolly - Really!!!!
Aug 2017 • Friends
Like a previous reviewer stated I was in the Jolly Woodman recently and got an unexpected call. I don't normally takes calls in a pub but wasn't sure if it was my phone ringing or not. It happened to be my phone and while looking at the screen and being in the process of switching it off I received a few pokes to my arm from the guy who runs it (Joe I think his name is) who bluntly and rudely told me to take it outside, I haven't been prodded like that since I was about 8 by my mother!! On other occasions I've seen other people on their mobiles and nothing has been mentioned. One day around 4pm I took my children in there as my son had just returned from being away on a school trip. We were sitting down having a lovely conversation and Joe walked in and told the barmen to move us from the seat we were sitting in as we were too near the bar. If it was a busy time I would have understood but we were the only ones in there and weren't staying for long, we then had to move to a seat 5 ft away - pathetic. unfortunately I think it a regulars pub and if your face doesn't fit Joe simply doesn't want you in there. Like the pub but the person who runs it spoils what could be a really nice pub.

Not so Jolly.

I've been here over numerous years & went yesterday. The Timothy Taylor was ok (the best Saracens Head St Helens) but went into the main bar. The seats are a bit grubby & I'm convinced I could smell "dog" whilst sitting there. The Bull is dog friendly but you never smell this. Mate turned up & at the bar he got a call unexpected from his mum whilst on the phone we were keenly pointed out a small sign behind the bar - no calls to be taken on mobiles by staff. Well we finished our drinks & went up to the Sister pub The Chancery. I've always felt this pub is a regulars only. If you see the reviews then regulars are mentioned all the time. It's not the best pub in Beckenham in my opinion & always feel as a visitor the regulars run this pub - this is my opinion over a number of years reminding me of the slaughtered lamb!!!We won't be going back. The Chancery is a welcoming place see review.

A good old fashioned pub
Jul 2016
If you're looking for a quiet place to enjoy a drink and chat, this is the pub for you! No music, ( There is a telly) but I've only seen it on once for the rugby. Everyone is friendly, even on your first visit, someone will say hello or smile at you. It can get squashed in the evening, always a sign of a good place to be, but no one is averse to turning sideways, squeezing in a bit or leaning backwards to let you past. I've been visiting on and off for about 3 years and still love going there. There is seating outside at the front and back . I've never made it to either although I keep promising myself I will. Maybe next time?

A proper English pub

Like stepping back in time, The Jolly Woodman is the perfect antidote to all that's bad in high street pubs. No loud music, just good beer, and good company.

Best pub in Beckenham
Feb 2016 • Friends
Charming, small, cosy but - despite some reviews I have seen - warm and welcoming. It is not a foodies pub, it is a pub pub. The beer is well kept, and there are normally at least four real ales on hand-pumps, Tim Taylor Landlord often being on and being my choice generally. If you can find that well kept then that is what I am drinking.
There are tables outside on the small and quiet street, and a small yard like garden to the rear. The loos are outside too. The decor is a little dated, but that is part of its charm too. It is worn and comfy like a pair of old beloved slippers.
This is not for everyone, but in my eyes it can do no wrong.

(If you need more grandeur, more class and more food - !! - then the pub next door, the Chancery, is the best gastro-pub in Beckenham.)

A really lovely proper pub. Small and friendly. Situated within a beautiful little area of quaint cottages.
