More than the Ramana Ashram itself, this is the place to really feel his energy. It is a fairly easy and steady climb up here (about 30 mins), but unless you come early in the morning, it will get very hot and sunny. While you can climb up here any time after 7AM, unfortunately the caretaker does not arrive until 8.15 to open the gates. So start your climb at 7, and then sit on the steps outside overlooking the town below you. Once the gate is opened, you will be drawn inside by the sheer force of Ramana's energy. Spend as much time as you want in the calm, cool cave, that is very comfortable to sit. There are mats and cushions, so need to bring your own.

The Skandasramam is a cave, where Bhagwan Ramana Maharshi lived from 1916 to 1922.We can approach the Skandasramam from side of the Ramanashramam. For reaching this cave you have to climb uphill for 1.4 kms,This is an ideal place for meditation. From there you can get a birds eye view of Arunachaleshwarar templewhich is the biggest temple in the world dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is open from 8.15 am to 4.30 pm.

Myself along with my parents got to visit Thiruvannamalai last weekend, we took an auto to visit the spiritual attractions inside the city. The auto diver (Sakthi) was so helpful, he climbed the hill along with us. We need to climb the hill for 10 more minutes from Virupaksha cave.

Rama Maharishi stayed at Virupaksha cave for nearly 16 years, after that stayed at Skandasramam for few years. The atmosphere was so tranquil and the best place for doing meditation. We really had awesome time there.

Reviewing places like this is showing torch to Sun. One can not. Its a very personal experience. Unique in nature. Just being here one can feel the silencing of the mind. More than reading hundred thousand books. Must must must experience. Only for sincere seekers.

A swami chants here each day at about 8 am, when the ashram opens for the day. Listen to the chant, be absorbed in it, and meditate deeply and find the peace within that is your very being. Start from Ramana Ashram about 7:30.

We spent a couple of hours at this Ashram. It was a highly spiritual experience which had a calming effect.

This is the place of meditation of Skand Rishi long back and Ramana Maharishi in 20th century. The long decades these saints have spent meditating here is felt when one sits here.

I found the experience very powerful.

Part of Ramanashram this place is open from 8 am to 5 pm . Do not miss the first article at 8 am - a Swami sings here from the docks at the time of lighting the first lamp I'd the day . The walk from Ramanashram to here is very steep - not a vise for peopke with knee problems, elderly , and with serious health problems . It is place to meditate . Rule Silence is strictly followed. Water available here but , no food . Beware of monkeys - may snatch you bag if it has food . Very serene and a big blessing ! Must visit !

It is located inside the Sri Ramana Ashram and place is to resembles the peaceful and silence like Sri Ramana Ashram. Walking up from Ramana ashram, I had no idea that footwear was allowed during the climb. I wish I had worn mine. Also, would recommend carrying water, fruit in a slingbag. And perhaps a walking stick if you are much older and have trouble with your knees. It is over 1 km plus of a hike, DO it slowly. There will be other people along the way, some of them do it in groups. There will be monkeys at the ashram so don't carry eatables and water openly, unless you want to be grabbed at or followed. hehe I wore a red scarf, so one monkey climbed all over me at the ashram. They are naughty little creatures, I'll tell you that. But it did not harm me in any way. I wish my fears had let me interact with it more. You can reach the place in 30-45 mins depending on your walking speed. It is situated at a height and it is quite the climb, especially for non-hikers like me. I met a wandering saint on the way up. He welcomed me and was sitting by some of the rocks, he asked me what I was doing there and we made small talk. But I was alone and apprehensive about continuing the conversation so I quickly made my way up. I wondered about him later. Seems to be a regular there. You might meet him on the way up. Leave your footwear outside, keep your mobile on silent mode before entering. There is an entry way where you can sit and two rooms with a sitting area inside. You will find others sitting and meditating/reading. Beautiful place :)

You go back to Maharishis time when you go here. The breezy walk up the mountain path itself takes you to another world. You can see the Arunachaleshwar temple from the top. You could go to Skandashram from Ramanashram or from the main town itself. There are some books kept in Skandashram. There are timings for the Ashram. I think it closes by 5pm or so. On could go to Virupakasha cave from Skandashram. It s about 5 mins of steep stairs going down the hill.
