About
It was Britain's deadliest conflict and one which shaped our modern world. Why did brother take up arms against brother and how did a once all-powerful monarch lose his head to the axeman? Discover how the people of Newark survived three sieges by dodging cannon fire, hammering flat family silver to make coins, only for plague to ravage the town. Put yourself on the front line, feel the weight of armour and weapons and aim to destroy the Governor's House as a Parliamentarian gunner. Which Side Will You Choose? New for Spring 2018, two new exhibitions: Cutting Edge: The Changing Tools of War and Shaking the Foundations: The Quest for Democracy. Exhibition covered with normal admission prices!

If you are intersted in history this is a must visit attraction in Newark. The premises is spotless. The information gleaned from here was second to none and the exhibits are really good and informative

What a brilliant find! Spent ages here, there is so much to see. Some fabulous exhibits. Even stuff from the Royal Armouries. A quiz to do, dressing up, lots of activities. Great for a rainy day. Very informative, friendly staff. Talked for ages to the lady on the entrance desk. Brilliant.

An excellent visit today hosted by the very professional Mrs Twentyman who taught us about how to fire a Matchlock musket, civil war medicine and also how to keep witches from your door.
Today`s visit was free with tours and living history and was outstanding, especially as a taster.
Very professional indeed.

My son is extremely interested in British history and he was let down by this museum. It was small, mismatched and seemed rather thrown together. I'm not sure if it's Covid related or always the way however it was very boring and quick to walk through. I understand they need the entrance fee for the upkeep, however it it not worth the money.

Sorry you didn't enjoy your experience that much peachyknick. We are continuing to open more spaces in the museum and now have three floors and seven galleries to explore with five dedicated to fascinating Civil War history and two to Newark's journey from pre-history to the present day. We hope you might consider visiting again at some point as more and more interactives are reintroduced. It's also worth keeping an eye on our website events page for more ways to engage with our collection.

Visited museum midweek having parked in Applegate car park virtually opposite the museum for basically a pound an hour can use cash or debit card in machine. Went to museum with my 15 yrs old Grandson at reduced rates and we spent a very pleasant 90 minutes there.
Storyboards, portraits, armour/uniform and weaponry on display. And what looked to me to be modern interactive displays which would appeal to youngsters. For the more morbidly interested there was a section containing a pair of severed ears in a jug, Charles the 1st blood and the needle and thread set used to stitch his head back to his body for burial. Nice.
Staff were pleasant and very friendly and a mask is asked to be worn if poss.
There are a couple of sights in the market place associated with the Civil war and of course the castle ruins.
Make use of the refreshments offered in St Marys church. 2 mugs of coffee and a wedge of Cheese scone and butter £3 the lot.
A short drive to Southwell to view the Saracens head and Archbishops Palace where Charles spent his last night and following morning of freedom completed the history lesson for the day.

It was half price entry, though at £4 each it was still overpriced. What a dry dull boring place they have made it. Very few artefacts, and a minimal number of information boards. You would be better of reading a book. It really didn’t do anything to bring the story alive. Very poor.

Hi PBPG, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your experience that much. As you can see from many of our other reviews and average rating, most reviewers have appreciated the range of objects and thoughtful interpretation carefully curated by our Collections and Exhibitions team. I hope in the future you might give us another chance as we are continuing to open more spaces in the museum and now have three floors and seven galleries to explore with five dedicated to fascinating Civil War history and two to Newark's journey from pre-history to the present day. We are also reopening our cinema this week which shows immersive films giving you a glimpse at life in the 17th century and key Civil War characters. It's also worth keeping an eye on our website events page for more ways to engage with our collection including chances to discover some of the 95,000 objects in our Resource Centre which we have just offered for Heritage Open Days and plan to do again in the future.

This is an interesting museum, which combines a local museum for Newark with a special Civil War Museum.
However, I don't think it really justifies the entry ticket price.
Best visited for one of the special temporary exhibitions and / or events including re-enactors, conferences and lectures in order to get your money's worth!
