Earlier churches had stood on the site. It is one of the largest parish churches in the country. It is the size of a cathedral. Two Chantry chapels are remaining from the middle ages,

This church needs a really good clean and some money spending on it to get it back up to what it was.

Amazing building, grand, beautifully maintained church. Impressive stained glass windows.
A peaceful place where you can sit quietly, contemplate and pray.

Beautiful and Historic Parish Church in the Centre of Newark
Dec 2019
St Mary's is a beautiful and historic building in the centre of Newark. At certain times of year the tower is open and it's worth booking a trip up to see the view of the market town and beyond. Visits to the crypt can be made on the same occasions. There is a small cafe at the back of the church that's open regularly and serves good cakes. The annual Christmas Tree festival is on for a week at the beginning of December and is definitely worth visiting. This year there were over 150 trees. A range of services are offered to welcome everyone to church.

St Mary Magdalene Church. Newark on Trent
Dec 2019
If you get a chance when in Newark to visit the church, even just for a coffee and cake it is well worth it. On certain days throughout the year there is a tour where you can go up the tower to the bottom of the spire and the guide will inform you of the history of the church and all for £2. I have done this twice, but then again I do love Newark on Trent. Also at the moment the Christmas tree display is on, well worth a look.

BEAUTIFUL CHURCH
Nov 2019
Often played in here - a really lovely church with much history and much to admire. Often every day and quite a few concerts performed throughout the year.

"As I am now, so you will be."
Oct 2019
Lovely church in centre of Newark and convenient for the Market place Town Hall , shops and pubs. Visited Newark mid week and parked at the street level Appleton Gate car park. Lots of spaces and cost £2.50 - 3 hours. Car park to church is 2-3 minutes walk past the Palace theatre/ Civil War Museum.
You know you are in for a treat as you approach the glass panelled entrance doors and are able to catch an early glimpse of the stunning interior.
A welcoming church it has a cafe to the left just inside the entrance.
It was a lovely surprise to see that the wooden pews had not been replaced by modern seating.
Tudor rose ceiling, beautiful stained glass windows, a golden screen behind the altar and a wooden version in the armed forces chapel together with personal histories and photos of local fallen soldiers of WW1 a nice touch.
But its the little things which intrigue and fascinate me in such a building for example the 17th century graffiti on the wooden desks abutting the nave and the delightful if slightly alarming 16th century painting of the Dance of Death painted on two panels of the southern chantry chapel. Do not miss it - a simple but effective warning of inevitable death!
But on a lighter note have a brew and a bite to eat in the cafe. £1 for a mug of filter coffee, a couple of quid for a filled jacket potato and then relax on the sofa and contemplate the surroundings for 20mins or so.
Drop a pound or so in the donation box and there - you have had a pleasant hour or so.
