Favourite pub in Newark
Jan 2020 • Solo
I often visit the fox and crown; they have an excellent selection of drinks and the bar staff are very knowledgable and helpful - they always help me pick a drink they know I’ll love! You can really tell the manager is really passionate about beer and the pub in general which shines through in the drinks available and the service. I always find the atmosphere to be really lovely, I wouldn’t hesitate to go and have a drink alone in there. The food menu is very reasonably priced and they have a great selection (including vegan options which aren’t just the standard tomato pasta). I would certainly recommend people give it a try!

Superb pub

Visited after the Christmas light switch on. There was a great atmosphere with a good mix of people of all ages.

It is a well run pub with friendly staff and a good range of well kept beers.

Highly recommended.

Good pub with old fashioned values
Oct 2019
Just off the main square this Castle Rock pub is a real haven in Newark Town Centre. We visited on a Friday lunchtime - the service was very friendly and efficient. Had a lovely pint of Harvest Pale and a BLT ciabatta and chips and salad - £4.95 for the food - a bargain! WIll go again when in Newark.

Dog friendly pub
Oct 2019 • Friends
My husband and I have been to the Fox and Crown a few time. It’s a great normal pub; nice beer, nice food, nice people. It also allows dogs which is a bonus.

Ploughman’s, pies and dirty fries were smashing.

Indiana Joughin and The Search For A Better Mash
Oct 2019 • Solo
So I came in for some food and a pint of a stonking hangover from a particularly heavy Tuesday night sesh, and I grabbed a steak pie and chips or mash, and well my boy aren't I glad I went for the mash. This mash is the greatest I've ever tasted, who ever made it must have dabbled in the mystic culinary arts of mash making!
Having tasted this I couldn't shake it from the brain, and it caused me to travel the world to find something that came close, but oh allackaday, twas none to be discovered! So the next natural progression was to search the stars.
I snuck into Area 51 a couple of days AFTER the famous first raid so they weren't expecting me, and hopped aboard a ship and took off. I travelled long and hard, through toil and and danger till I reached Neptune's moons where to my great surprise I found David Bowie and all the other great spacefarers; Carl Sagan, the Aliens who brought Jesus to Earth, Jimi Hendrix, Kalpana Chawla, and, for some bizarre reason the really attractive delivery lad who came in the first time I had that incredible mash! So I continued on, but the delivery fella had heard tell of the mash lords who dwelled on THE 9TH PLANET!!!! so I headed there.
On the dawn of my 46th year of space travel I drifted into a mighty space palace atop the lofty heights of the Mountains of Mash (bit of a Nightmare but that amount of mash can't support it's self so it's all a bit goopy, goooooop) and there, at long last I found them, the Masters of Mash! And lo I listened and they told me the secrets, and I learned that the chef at The Fox and Crown had taken a very similar trip but in pilgrimage to this holy place and learnt the sacred arts. Then they sent me back as a prophet, to spread the good word of Pie and Mash!

Cause of the time I've been away and the fundamental laws of physics I means that although I have the body of a 46 year old, I have a mind that's closer to 172, it's a lot for a mind to take.

TL:DR This pie and mash is damn good 10/10 would recommend

Wow, what an incredible review. Were I to take a similar journey round the world, through the stars, moons and beyond - I am certain I would never find another reviewer quite as complimentary and creative as you. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your meal - and the mish mash of experiences which followed. We look forward to welcoming you back soon, when you're next in our neck of the galaxy. Cheers, Rosie

Lovely little pub, disappointed by food
Jul 2019 • Couples
Lovely little pub and very friendly staff however I was slightly disappointed with the Ploughman's Platter, was expecting this to come out on a board or something but instead I got this which looked a little bit careless and thrown together, a board and some garnish would make all the difference presentation wise. My wife did however enjoy her meal which was the pie with mash, peas, carrots and gravy 😊

Hi there Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I am glad to hear you found the pub to be lovely, and particularly that our staff were friendly. I am also pleased to hear your wife enjoyed her pie, however it is disappointing to read that you were not happy with the presentation of your platter. The photo taken is indeed an accurate representation of the meal, it is not served with a garnish - as of recently, none of our meals are served with garnishes (although some include a fuller side salad as part of the meal). This is part of our commitment to reducing food waste, as we found that when we did serve garnishes & coleslaw etc although it does make the plate look nicer on arrival, most of this food ended up sadly thrown straight in the bin untouched. If you would prefer some salad with your ploughman's platter, please ask our staff as we will be very happy to accommodate requests with food orders. We have found overwhelmingly that our customers prefer proper plates instead of boards - this is something we trialled but scrapped after customer feedback. We do have some boards which are used for buffets etc so again, please ask the staff if this is your preference, as we will be happy to use one if available. I hope we can welcome you back to The Fox and Crown soon. Kind regards, Rosie

Hi Graham, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I’m sorry to hear you’re disappointed with the prices on our new menu. We’ve put a lot of work into producing something which would suit our customers, and have had some really positive feedback. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to always please everyone and that does seem to be the case here. We received a lot of comments asking for more options with our cobs, and so decided to offer the flexibility of a “pick your own filling/s” approach. The cost of buying in different ingredients varies greatly, so the menu and ordering process would be quite complicated if we priced each filling individually. We felt it best to keep things simple and priced our cobs at £2.50 for one filling, and £3.00 for two fillings. This price was calculated, as with everything we serve in our pubs, in line with cost prices and competitor pricing. I hope this clarifies and that we will see you again soon.
