About
A beautiful and secluded nature reserve. Creating the biggest reedbed in the East Midlands. RSPB and Tarmac Quarry are making a haven for wildlife. The site now has reedbed, mature woodland, wildflower rich meadows and wetland to explore on the trails. There is also pond dipping and kids activity packs available from the beach hut. There is free parking (donations welcome) and we are open dawn until dusk 365 days a year. At present the reserve can offer no café or toilet facilities but they can be found in the nearby village of Collingham (less than 5 minutes drive away). This is the perfect destination for a relaxing walk and some peace and quiet.

Such a beautiful site. You can walk, pond dip, or just stand and stare at the wildlife. I'll be back!

Excellent, well worth the effort 👍

A little know site but getting more popular every year. Wild life can be varied depending on time of year so visitors must be patient. Bitterns are known to inhabit the site. Thought to have bred 2019.
NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED ON SITE except guide dogs.

Worth a visit
Aug 2020
On our way to the start of the walks we were delighted to see a very large field of red clover which was a beautiful sight in itself. We enjoyed the Cromwell Trail where we spotted a few different varieties of birds, including Canada geese and great crested grebes. We liked going along the boardwalk and over the floating bridge, commenting on its excellent construction which allows you to get pleasantly close to the extensive reedbed. This is a well maintained nature reserve which can be enjoyed by all the family.

Little known reserve
Aug 2019
Even some local people i.e. in Newark, haven't heard of Langford or if they have haven't visited.I've lead our walking group here several times and they think it's a little gem! A big advantage is that the paths follow the raised bank around phase one so you're looking down onto the lake and the wild life.
It's unfortunate that the R.S.P.B. is unable to have a Visitor Centre as the entrance would be through the adjacent working quarry.

Thanks for your comments, yes we certainly do seem be hidden away, but are well appreciated when we people find us! Thanks for leading walks on the reserve, its a great way to get the message out that we are here. Maybe one day we will be able to relocate the entrance and have a visitor centre.

Nice reserve good walk.
Mar 2019
Went for a walk to the reserve. There is a bit of a walk from the car park to the reserve. A bit disappointed sheen we got there because the reception hide was locked up. Took a walk round part of the lake and enjoyed enjoyed it. Heard a Bittern whilst walking round, it was heard on the bit of the lake we didn't get round. On way back to car we saw a Fox stranding on the path watching us.
Definitely a place to return to finish walking around the lake.

Glad that you made it, and that you enjoyed your visit to Langford. Well done for hearing the bittern, we have three at the moment so are hoping that two pair up. Definitely hope that you return to complete your walk and hope that the Beach Hut will be open on that day to welcome you.

Well Bill Bailey was right....we were cycling on 64 cycle route which passes by and decided to pop in....fantastic range of flowers and butterfly’s and damsel flies and then there were the birds. We were greeted by a couple of enthusiastic volunteers at the hide .....lovely spot.

Great transformation

Very well worked conversion of former gravel works (with extraction still taking place nearby). Peaceful, plenty of birdlife, and generally not very busy. A lot of effort has gone into making this attraction accessible, and somewhere that you would want to come to again and again.

Hi - really pleased you enjoyed your visit with us. We are very proud of the hard work that has been done to make the reserve so peaceful (amazing when you consider how near we are to the working quarry). I hope you saw lots of different species, and that you visit us again soon.

Beautiful place for a peaceful walk
Mar 2019 • Couples
Moved to the area recently and I was looking for somewhere for my boyfriend and I to go for a nice Saturday morning walk. Langford Lowfields is absolutely beautiful, and while we saw quite a few people around on our walk, it was so peaceful and quiet which allowed us to see many birds and enjoy the views.

There’s a decent amount of parking and a suggested donation of £1.

Unexpected pleasure
Jan 2019 • Couples
Husband said "google longford Lowfields,Bill Bailey recommends it"..
I thought "great, here we go"...
However off we went, and what we found was a truly lovely nature reserve.
You wont find a coffee and gift shop. You won't find hordes of people taking their weekend constitutional walk .However you will find peace and quite, a plethora of bird life and lovely volunteers .
Well done and who knew ... clearly Bill Bailey did .

Nice Walks
Aug 2018 • Solo
Parked up and a little surprised by the length of the walk to the reed beds. Nice place for walks, not much wildlife to be seen on this occasion and a shame no facilities in terms of refreshment or toilets. It was ok but think RSPB has better sights. Having said that it’s relatively quiet and very scenic.

Thank you for your feedback. We are as yet not fully operational and there is much work to be done at the reserve. One day we will have our very own visitor centre, but not for some time yet. We are trialling selling refreshments at the Beach Hut - cookies, flapjack and water, but these are only available when the Beach Hut is open due to there being no electricity. It has been very quiet on the reserve for wildlife due to the heat but we usually have a good range. I'm glad you enjoyed the peace and quiet - it is often commented that the reserve is very tranquil. I hope you will come again soon.
