We were following the book bench trail, so had to go inside to find one of them. It was a pleasant surprise to see an interesting Victorian style indoor market with a restaurant and a number of shops. It's a cut through to the Town Hall and market so worth a look

The Buttermarket shopping centre is certainly a beautiful building, dating back to 1774, a real joy to walk through and admire. Such a pity it's almost empty, you can just about count the number of open outlets on one hand. The upstairs section is sadly closed off, it surely can't be long before the downstairs area follows suit. Visually wonderful, such a waste.

The Buttermarket Shopping Centre in a unique old building and it is the only covered shopping centre in Newark. You can walk in from Middle Gate or the Market Place. There are all sorts of shops and on the first floor is a cafe with seating overlooking the shopping area below. Very relaxing and bright in a historic old building.

The middle Gate side of the Buttermarket has truly been transformed now with a great cafe/bar and wonderful fair trade shop. The staff in both places are warm and friendly to make your visit a great experience. You can get some beautiful things from the shop including furniture, gifts and jewellery and it's well priced too. Great music that just makes you want to dance. Had a delicious meal and several drinks at the eatery across the way where it's relaxed and very home from home feel to it. Couldn't recommend both enough, try it you'll have a great time

What is going on at the Buttermarket? All the retail units were empty when they should have had occupants for Christmas trade. Such a shame.

Lots of independent traders, newly opened again so still a couple of units free but worth a visit to meet and purchase from local artists and creatives.

The worst thing they ever did was change this from the Town Hall to The Buttermarket. When I was young it was a bustling place with a wonderful cafe (not the one thats there now) Now it is depressing, besides a the bath bomb shop and the eyebrow lady there is nothing much in there. No surprise really with the ludicrous rents they charge businesses to be in there.
A real shame that out local council would rather see empty units than reduce the rents.

Interesting building to see and look round but not much inside. Shame it isn't been used to it's full potential because it would be a lovely if all the shops were occupied.

Went to look at the re-vamped and revived Buttermarket. A lovely vibrant feel. Cakes, pizza and soup to choose from and a good selection of art and craft stalls. Will be visiting again soon as it feels like a brilliant work in progress.

Almost empty for the last 2 years, the 18th century gorgeous building now known as The Buttermarket has been bought by the local Council and filled with local business folk and has just re-opened. Loads of small craft, jewellery, eco cosmetics and household furnishings and clothes (for kids and women) plus cakes and brownies, soup wagon, vegan food and photographers, an aquarium shop, a fabric shop and a quiet corner. It's an unbelievably lively and vibrant place again. Busiest on Thur/Fri/Sat. I think its closed Sunday and Monday. They've got buskers on Saturdays too.
Really cool place now..
