If you drink wine like coke - it is place for you.
Sep 2017 • Friends
If you drink wine like coke and if you love disneyland - it is great place for you. But if you love and understand wine, you should avoid this place.
Yes, I know, Mr. Thummerer is well known and great winemaker, but today degustations in his winery are only money-maker machine. Our guide in vineyard Eva - daughter of Mr. Vilmos - did't know and couldn't recognize varieties on her own vineyard. The tasting was conducted by his granddaughter. She was only able to say generals about tested wines, did mistakes, describing winemaking technology. Nothing new, nothing interesting for me. Actually food was not bad, wines correct (only 6 basic wines in whole degustation), but nothing more. Definitely it was not worth 10000 forints.
I know a lot of cellars in Eger region, where you can spend time in excellent atmosphere, testing more interesting, less commercial wines, discussing directly with winemaker.
Its a pity, but truth.

Delightful lunch and tour.

Short stay in Eger, an hour and a half north of Budapest, on a whim decided to visit the Thummerer winery. An excellent decision!
Tour given by Eva Thummerer, a thoroughly pleasant and knowledgeable lady. She answered all our questions with a smile and was keen to pass on her passion and enthusiasm. Her husband is the chef, they make a great team.
Short tour, 30 mins, followed by lunch. Undoubtedly one of the best meals we have had in Hungary. Slow cooked duck, veal and vegetables. Six wines to accompany the three courses, with an explanation by Eva on each wine. My favourite, not an easy choice, was the Bikaver.
All in all, highly recommended.

Very Disappointing!
Sep 2016 • Couples
Today we went to the Thummerer Pince. I wanted to buy a lot of wine for my own wine Collection. As we arrived there the seller lady was so unkindly to us that I lost my taste and intention - so we went home without one bottle of wine. I also wanted to make a wine Menu - but this unkindeness destroyed all my motivations!

Great Wine Tasting
Apr 2016 • Business
I was as a tour guide with a group in this winery. We had a fantastic evening - with excellent food and wine tasting. My favourite wine was their rose. My group had traditional local food from the oven, for me they prepared vegetarian food - with really good taste - it was a real gastronomical experience - also made in their oven. If you visit the region of Eger, it is a must.

Exceptional dinner
Oct 2015 • Friends
This is an amazing cellar with enormous stocks of wine. The tour provided a history of the caves/cellars and the migration into the wine business. The dinner was exceptional The duck and pork roasts were slow cooked in a massive oven for many hours and the end result was the best duck I have ever tasted. We were treated to about 6 different wines over the course of our scrumptious meal.

Wonderful experience in every way
Jun 2014 • Couples
Our excursion to the Thummerer winery was really outstanding. The food, THE WINES, and the whole atmosphere was a wonderful experience. This is a small winery and I think that our guide had made reservations in advance. Do go there for lunch since the food was beautifully prepared and delicious. And the wine pairings really made the meal. And, do visit the cellars (they give a guided tour) since they are interesting, lovely, and quite attractive. All in all, a must-do visit if you are anywhere near Eger.

The best winery to visit in the Eger Region!
Sep 2014 • Couples
On a recent overnight trip to Eger, my Hungarian cousin, my husband, and I had the pleasure of touring this family-owned winery, and then having a scrumptious supper in the cellar.

As the laws in Hungary allow a 0% blood-alcohol level when driving, we decided to take a taxi from our apartment in Eger out into the countryside to the winery, and then back again after our meal was finished. This was a wise choice, as the wine pairings offered with the substantial meal would have been a shame to miss!. If you arrange for a taxi, try to negotiate a cheaper round-trip price than the first one you are quoted,

We were the only English-speaking guests visiting that evening, so having my bilingual cousin with us was a bonus. As well, the winery owner’s daughter, Eva Thummerer, spoke excellent English, and she was very happy to explain things to us as the night progressed.

We started with a tour of the wine cellars, which were extensive and interesting. The cellars have been carved into volcanic rock, and have natural climate control. One of the largest wine-aging barrels in Hungary is located here! There was noble mold growing throughout the cellar, and this added to the old-world charm.

After the tour, our meal began in one of the cellars. This was a lovely venue for this wonderful meal! We began with a plate of Hungarian-made artisan cheeses. The winery staff travels over 70 KM to buy this cheese from a small, craft cheese-making company. All of the choices were very tasty! The main course consisted of roasted potatoes and oven-roasted duck that were cooked in separate crocks for hours inside a kiln. This method of cooking made the meat and potatoes tender and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Rounded off with fresh cabbage salad, the freshest bread you could imagine, and crisp pickles, this meal would rival any first-class restaurant in Budapest!

The white and red wines were paired perfectly with the food selections. Traditional Hungarian desserts finished of the meal, which were paired with a sweet white wine. Thanks so very much to Eva Thummerer for being more than generous with her time that evening, as she stopped by our table before every course to explain the food and the wine in English.

We were able to buy wines after the meal, and the prices were unbelievably reasonable. This winery earns a high rating for many reasons!

Excellent introduction to Hungarian wines
Sep 2014 • Friends
As part of a boarding group, I were treated to a tour of this family-owned winery's extensive cellars, cut into volcanic tuff and covered with black mold, followed by dinner and wine tasting.

The owner's daughter led the tour and conducted the tasting. We learned about the cellaring methods used in this part of Hungary, both oak barrels and steel vats. Thummerer makes a wide variety of wines, including the Hungarian specialties Egri Bikavér (bull's blood) and tokaj.

Dinner included tastings of seven of the wines, along with an excellent meal of Hungarian cuisine at its best. We learned about each of the wines as they were presented, and of course bottles were available for sale later (at prices far more reasonable than at the airport, I later discovered).

I would recommend this experience to anyone visiting the Eger area.
