Kids enjoyed the stray cats. Zoo is a waste of time with animals you can see anywhere. If you like churchy stuff you will probably like the church. Free Turkish delight was the highlight.

Free entry but donation boxes spread around. Very peaceful and nice to quietly enjoy the views. Ladies must use one of the robes provided upon entry. It is a lovely place but not sure why they have the animals there, especially the deers outside in the blazing sun, we didn't like seeing that and not much room for them to move around.

At only 3 km from Lefkada on a grassy hill is the Holy Monastery of the Virgin Faneromeni for centuries represents the religious center of the island as the oldest and biggest monastery. The monastery is dedicated to the Dormition (Assumption), which is also the patron of the island and is celebrated on the island. According to tradition, in this place there was once a temple of goddess Artemis. When the Apostle Paul went through Nikopoli neighboring Prevezα sent to the island of his three students, Akilas, Sosion and Herodion. Last (Herodion) are kneeling praying with faith in God and the figure of the goddess Artemis, fell and broke into pieces. At this spot, Christians built a small temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After that, the Apostle Paul ordained Sosion for first bishop of Lefkada.

Nice view, but no better than stopping on the roadside. Cannot endorse this place due to the terrible conditions the animals are kept in. One dead parrot and a bunch of dehydrated deer do not make a zoo. Bus-loads of tourists are hardly compatible with the traditional serenity of a monastery... one might even go so far as to accuse them of chasing the euro over enlightenment of the soul.

A beautiful place. An active monastery with Greek Orthodox monks on site. Attractive church open to visits. The various buildings are well maintained.
We saw the animals being fed in the zoo. And we played with several little frisky kittens.
A majestic view from its great height over the land and sea beyond.
Well worth a visit.

Faneromeny Monastery is the most important religious center on Lefkada island, dedicated to the Mother of God, is 4 km from Lefkada Town. Being the protector of the island, the Mother of God is celebrated on the Holy Trinity Monday (the first Monday after Pentecost), a day when a lot of believers come to attend the service. The entrance is free, as well as in the ecclesiastical museum, but photography is forbidden in the museum. According to tradition, this was a place of worship for the goddess Artemis, but in the year 63, when the Apostle Paul passed through the area, he sent to the island three of his disciples who prayed and the statue of the goddess broke and the locals built here a little church. The name comes from the wooden icon, which the Mother of God has outlined it herself. The monastery is built on a hill at an altitude of 135 m in the south-western village of Fryni. At the entrance there is a very large parking space, free of charge. Attractive for children is the small zoo.

You'll find the Monastery a few miles out of the capital Lefkada and sitting up a hill with views over the city and coast line. Closed between 2pm and 4pm. Ladies must be dressed appropriately, but robes are supplied, a small chapel, courtyards and gift shop. Shame we didn't see any monks, but respect their privacy. The zoo has a few varieties of birds and squirrels. Lovely views

The monastery and grounds are beautiful with fantastic views. No admission costs and welcoming to visitors. Only downside is the 'dinner lady' cotton robes for the ladies to cover shoulders and knees lol!

An important religious center and historic site for the island; consisting of a Greek Orthodox Church, monastery garden, museum (with rare Byzantine icons/old holy manuscripts) and a small zoo! The Monastery is located above Lefkada town, easy to find and access/park en-route to Agios Nikita and offers stunning views over the northern side of the bay and the town . The zoo is great fun for both adults and kids alike. There is no entrance fee although you can make donations.

Afgelopen mei bezocht ik het prachtige klooster. Op de muur/ achterzijde vh klooster ( kant van het uitzicht naar zee) staat een symbool in de muur met twee spiraalvormen . Ik zou graag de betekenis daarvan willen weten ?
