This cemetery near the western shore of Lake Sevan is full of 12th Century katchkar tombstones many of which depict scenes from the life of the deceased. At the main entrance an ancient woman will, for a modest tip, escort you to the most interesting ones and explain in broken English, the significance of them. Rest rooms are at the shop across the street.

Being a bit of a history buff, I have found that visiting village cemeteries provides a significant background to the place you are visiting.
This may seem a little unusual and macabre, but a great deal of history can be found through headstones.
This cemetery, has great historical significance to Armenia and has the largest number of Cross-Stones in the country.
Our tour through the cemetery was made even more relevant due to our guide who interpreted much of what we were observing.
Certainly unique. Worth visiting, especially if you have someone who can "bring the history of the cemetery to life". So to speak!!!!

Site of many many khachkars above lake Sevan. It’s very impressive as there are hundreds of the khachkars in the grave yard dating from the 13th century and earlier. The inscriptions and pictures carved in the tomb stones are very beautiful and interesting. The grave yard also has modern day burial sites so is still a used location. Definitely worth a visit.

This cemetery is quite amazing. has many Khachkars (Carved Stone Crosses) and lots of interesting grave sites. You can spend a lot of time soaking up the history and the feeling of the place. Well worth visiting.

This is an extraordinary cemetery full of khachkars. There is a lot of history behind it and without a guide you miss out a lot. Fortunately, I was with one; otherwise you need to rely on the sign-posting.
I arrived here just before sun down and the light was ideal for photography.
Apart from the khachkars there are a few small chapels,
The whole place is steeped in history.
Old Babushka types will pester you a bit trying to sell souvenirs but generally it is a nice-kind of place although it is a cemetery!

..is also an ordinary cemetery.
However tempting it may be, tourists are advised to keep to the "visitors part", that contains most of the really old khachkars.
Read up on the topic, get a really good guide book or make print-outs, otherwise you will miss the most interesting parts. There are very informative signboards along the cemetery wall, but they are useless once you inside the wall.

This cemetery dates back to the medieval period and there are ones from this century. Some, during the Russian times, don’t have the traditional Aremenian headstone.

but one probably needs a guide to see the really special ones. We saw a couple, one depicting a wedding, another a farmer with his oxen. Of course lots of ornately carved crosses and the older ones with a very simple cross.

This cemetery is notable for the number and range of khachkars and is a surprisingly interesting place to visit.
