About
Take a speed boat from Sanur to one of Bali’s most enchanting locations. This spectacular island is outlined by towering limestone cliffs and surrounded by azure waters. The best way to experience Nusa Penida is via a day tour, which includes hotel transfers, boat tickets, and entry fees to the island. This grants you access to top sights such as the Insta-famous Kelingking Beach, Paluang Cliff, and Crystal Bay—a popular spot for snorkeling and catching the sunset. If you have more time on your hands, rent a scooter and discover Teletubbies Hill and the Nusa Penida Treehouse. Photo ops are aplenty, so get your cameras ready. – Tripadvisor

Nusa Penida is like Bali’s little sibling – smaller, quieter, but oh-so-stunning. It’s the Instagram model of the Bali province, with views so breathtaking they might just knock your flip-flops off. Only 25 kilometers from Bali (basically a stone's throw if you have a really good arm), this exotic island offers scenery so good you’ll forget how many stairs you’ve climbed to get those perfect photos. Sure, you can do a whirlwind day trip from Bali and cram everything into a few hours, but honestly, why rush? Stay a few days, soak in the vibes, and give your camera a workout. Between the jaw-dropping photo ops, scenic hikes, and crystal-clear beaches, Nusa Penida is a paradise for both adventurers and people who just want to lie on the sand pretending to read a book. Getting to Nusa Penida is straightforward – hop on a speedboat or a ferry from Sanur Beach in Bali. The speedboat ride takes about 45 minutes, which is just enough time to reapply sunscreen or practice your "I woke up like this" selfie pose. With multiple departures daily, you’re spoiled for choice. Once you’re on the island, the West is where the party’s at: Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Crystal Bay, and Paluang Cliff are the star attractions. Over on the East side, you’ll find the dazzling Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach, perfect for those who like their beaches with a side of dramatic cliffs. Fair warning, though – with the influx of tourists, the island could use a serious Marie Kondo clean-up session. So, while you’re snapping your millionth photo, remember to leave nothing but footprints and maybe pick up a bit of trash. Let’s keep this gem sparkling for everyone to enjoy

The island is absolutely beautiful with rugged cliffs and turquoise blue Sea, however the infrastructure is virtually nonexistent considering the amount of tourists visiting the island in recent years. There are plenty of new hotels, restaurants, clubs and tour companies and fastboats. There are no new roads, neither is there any proper signage. The roads are full of potholes and can be very dangerous. Doing the day trip means you have to hurry along, which leaves less time for caution and accidents, some fatal are happening every day. Certain areas on cliff sides which can be hit by sudden high waves should be roped off. Motorbikes should not available for tourists to rent until the roads are replaced/repaired to at least minimal international standard. We had a good trip as we decided to stay three nights and arranged to be driven each afternoon. This way we arrived at the highlight attractions after the crowds had left. Car and driver tours are relatively inexpensive, we paid $60 per 5 hour day. Driver doubled as a guide and photographer.

Very beautiful island, but the infrastructure is catastrophic. The internet is not very good and sometimes not at all, the streets are very small and full of potholes. The island is also very littered, especially in the tourist hotspots, but that is not necessarily the fault of the tourists but because there is not a single rubbish bin here. The rubbish is thrown into pits and burned. I would not recommend anyone who is not reasonably sporty, fit and not between 16 and 55 years old to go down to the beaches. It is very dangerous and you can easily trip or slip. In addition, there are extremely many tourists standing in the middle of the way to take photos, especially a lot of Chinese people are there and wanted to take photos with me (I am not a celebrity). So as I said, I would not recommend anyone who is reasonably sporty to go down the steep slopes, it can be fatal. You should also be careful where you go into the water. There are places with strong currents, you can even see them from far above. But apart from that, the view is of course very beautiful. I am staying at the Raja Lima Hotel and I would definitely recommend it. From here you can see Diamond Beach and, if the weather is good, you can even see the island of Lombok.

Pilau Nusa Penida offers a memorable culinary experience that perfectly captures the essence of Nusa Penida's vibrant food scene. This charming eatery combines fresh, local ingredients with traditional Indonesian flavors, creating dishes that are both flavorful and satisfying. The standout here is their rendition of Nasi Pilau (Pilau rice), a fragrant, spice-laden rice dish that pairs wonderfully with a variety of meats or seafood. The atmosphere is laid-back, with a rustic yet cozy vibe that reflects the island's natural beauty. Whether you're a traveler or a local, Pilau Nusa Penida is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in authentic island cuisine with a touch of modern flair.

The speed boat ride was good but once you reach the shore its a mix of happiness and sadness one side is the natural beauty on the other dirt and huge number of tourists that has completely compromised the natural beauty of the islands. Even our guide agreed that west islands are losing their beauty due to huge traffic of tourists. The roads are dirty and risky it feels the revenue being generated is not going in the infrastructure but sonewhere else. However, it is a must visit place for the casual tourist but at this stage, nature takes a back seat while the island has become a instagram island.

Okay, nice hotel, 3 rooms, Khamara, nice and quiet, very good restaurant. The cuisine in Indonesia has deteriorated a lot in recent years, but at Khamara it is good food. Penida pressure, plastic, plastic and did I say plastic?? Very bad roads, snorkeling with trip, from the beach there is something to see but that is moderate and you have to take into account the strong currents. Trips to the manta rays is like ajax going to play in the arena, not normally crowded, really not fun anymore. After 35 years of Indonesia I don't really have to go there anymore because of all the pollution and walking backwards from the indo kitchen

I will admit that we decided not to travel to all the beachy destinations whilst on the island that many review badly. Remembering that many other countries will try to scam you then Penida being just an hour from Kuta is likely no different. Plenty of dive boats head here to dive and snorkel as the island gets many currents. But food is pretty good and as always the majority of local people are very friendly and happy. Roads can get busy but thats what tourism does. I am sure though that many independent travelers like us will say its worth visiting for a few days to relax away from Dempasar and the likes.

I can only recommend this island if you have some time to be here. Day trips are a bust! We stayed 5 nights on Nusa Penida to the east (near Athu Beach). Were always on the road by motorcycle at the times when the day tours were either not there yet or were already gone. Were in beautiful places partly almost alone. For us the highlight of the entire Bali trip (We were still Gili Air, Lombock, Denpassar, Amed and Ubud). Getting to the beaches requires sturdy footwear and some common sense in assessing the risk of going into the water.

Pande was our guide and he was lovely. Picked us right up from the terminal and drove us around in AC with good music. Great tour, saw everything. He even let us wait in the car while it rained waiting for the ferry.

You have to stay there, not go there in the day. In my opinion it is better than Bali, which is now clogged with tourists (luckily we went in March), like all Southeast Asia. Of course, then there are those who are great travelers, and have seen much else elsewhere. But even I, in my own small way, have been traveling for fifty years, and at almost 69 years I have been traveling the island with the scooter ridden by my son, and my wife with the one ridden by my son's girlfriend. And this despite the streets. Sure, Kelingking beach is the world, but Crystal beach, Atuh beach and Coral beach are much, much better. I recommend staying at Meket bungalow, a little paradise.

We booked the entire trip, 3 x Beach (Kelingking, Broken, Angle Bilabong) and 3 stations for snorkeling (Manta, Gamat, Crystal bay).

What no one told us before that the beach tour just pushes photo stops in crowds of tourists across roads that are in a bad state, car to car lined up across the island.
In addition, the island is completely littered. Sustainable waste disposal on this island is a long way off and it is not due to developed countries or tourists. Even in the temple complexes, the plastic bottles are lying around.

The only positive was the snorkeling tour, although there is not much to see here. The reefs have already partially died, one was already completely destroyed. Mantay Bay we overrated, they are only seen in the morning, otherwise there is nothing to see in the bay. Therefore, we are not in the water here and continue to the next stop.

At 7am we were picked up at the hotel in Seminyak, 8pm we were back. The only meaningful activity on a 13-hour excursion was on the snorkel boat and took 90 minutes. The rest of the time we spent waiting for a ferry/boat or trips over pretty bad roads.
I call this a massive waste of time on holiday!!

I write about the island of Noosa Penida in general, not this location. Didn't like the word at all. Broken roads, construction everywhere, very dirty, beach where crystal bay strong waves and rocks from the waves fly at you. The snorkeling we were going for doesn't work. Paying almost 100 bucks to watch Kelingking is such a big deal. Basically, I think for that kind of money, there are better places to be in Bali. Maybe in five to 10 years they'll get this place cleaned up, but for now, this is the place I didn't like best in Bali.

The island is an overcrowded tourist trap littered with plastic, the roads are horrible and the traffic even worse. To get the famous Kelingking photo taken you have to stand in line at a construction site. So unless you can afford a helicopter or a private boat to go around the island don't waste your money. Stay on Bali.

Over hyped island thanks to Instagram. The island does indeed have some beautiful spots and there are some fun activities to do like snorkelling and swimming with manta rays. However, I do not recommend staying on the island itself. I was sold all kinds of dreams about amazing beaches and a tropical paradise and escape from the hustle and bustle of some of the other cities in Bali but found myself wanting to return to Bali ASAP. I initially booked a hotel for 3 nights but stayed only 2 and left early in the morning as quickly as possible.

The island has got no accessible beaches except for Crystal Bay and Kelingking Beach and the latter one can hardly be said to be accessible given how difficult the climb down (and climb up!) can be if you’re not fit. Nor is the climb down really safe given how steep it is and the poor infrastructure designed to climb down/up. These are literally the only two decent beaches on the island that can be accessed, everything else is impossible to access and you can’t simply just pack up your things in the morning and pop down to the beach for a swim or to sunbathe.

Getting around the island is impossible as well. You have two options: use a scooter OR a taxi driver but taxis here are insanely expensive. A 10 minute (4km) car ride from a restaurant to our hotel cost us 150k which is crazy when you consider GoJek from Canggu to Sanur the day before cost us less than that and that was 55mins and 20km! You can rent out a scooter here but even experienced riders will have a difficult time given how poor the roads and other associated infrastructure is. You can book a driver for the day but this will set you back some 600-800k and don’t be surprised when after all this your driver asks you to pay for their lunch meal as well.

As for the island itself, beyond the Instagram sites, there is nothing else. The forests and surrounding area are all littered with trash. The only decent restaurant appears to be Penida Colada in the North which gets insanely busy and requires people to queue for space. Beyond that, there is literally nothing else. It’s incredibly underdeveloped.

The locals appear to be pouring a lot of money into building hotel accommodation for tourists and you can see construction work everywhere. However, I think they should instead be focusing on investing in better roads and other infrastructure because right now, staying here a couple days is not very enjoyable.

Don’t be fooled by the Instagram photos. This is not the paradise you are made to believe by Instagram influencers. Please remember that they’re basically marketing professionals, their job is to sell you something and the Instagram posts can be very deceiving.

The villa where I was staying organised a guide to meet me on the island so I could swim with the manta rays. I got the fast boat across from Sunar and arrived around 9.00am in the morning. The port was very busy with drivers and name cards picking up their guests. I looked for my guide but after half an hour I realised he wasn't there to meet me. Okay, I thought I'm on my own and need to sort my own snorkelling out. Nusa Penida is not like Bali, smaller and more basic with lots of huts along the front offering tours. I went along them all and no one had availability for a me on any of the tours. About to give up I tried another hut and a lovely man helped me find a boat and got me last minute onto a three stop snorkelling trip for £15.00, he was an absolute star. We visited three reefs, they first was absolutely amazing and you got carried along by the current over the reef. The second two stops where good to but no where near as spectacular as the first, breath-taking. We then stopped an another part of the island having speed along on the speed boat taking in the sights along the way and the lovely man who had got me on the boat was there to meet me. He had arranged for a taxi to take me back to the harbour which turned out to be a moped!!! I hopped on the back and was whisked along the road back to the harbour at break neck speed, a little scary but very exciting. Before I got the fast boat back to Sunar I stopped for beer and a pizza a Murat Beach Club to enjoy the views then I headed back to Bali. I didn't see much of the island as I went to snorkel, unfortunately I didn't see any manta rays but I had a fabulous exciting and totally unexpected brilliant day. Note when you are waiting for your boat at the harbour there is no shade and if your boat is late the heat is very intense so make sure you have water.

One day snorkelling trip from Sanur.
Very poor experience. Booked via vendors on the promo made.
It was like a cattle market.
Waited for an hour to be picked up from 7.15am.
Then shuttled to a cafe at the harbour with about 300 other people.
All then taken to the ferry in mass and loaded on large boats.
Then on the island sent to another holding area and spoilt into smaller boats.
Our boat had about 20 people squashed on. Some people had no seats.
Getting in and off the boat with do many people difficult.
Stops at each snorkelling point very quick and felt rushed.
Snorkelling very disappointing.
No Mantas and coral poor.
Nice fish on one stop.
Large swell so boat really unstable with so many people on.
Wouldn’t recommend if you have been to other islands like Flores as snorkelling and whole experience very disappointing and really expensive extremely busy

We toured the island with an incredibly kind and attentive private driver (Agus Gede Koriana +62 82 145 100 800) The price was very reasonable… New car (which is not always the case on the island 🥶), careful and gentle driving, pleasant communication in good English (we learned a lot on the island)! As a bonus, a nice gift from him: editing a short film from photos taken of us during the day, it was a nice surprise! Thanks Agus! We recommend +++

Honestly, I wouldn’t do it again or recommend it to any of my friends.
It feels really scamy, not at all similar to Bali. In Bali, they know what hospitality means, but in my day spent at Nusa Penida was one frustrating experience after the other.
Bad infrastructure, lots of time spent on the car, the beaches are not that impressive to be worth all the trouble but the worst is that everyone there seems dead set to get the most possible money out of you. I will never forget how i was chased away from the beach after 10 minute since ordering a coke and a coconut because that was the maximum they allowed you to stay at a table for drinks, in order to get more tourists to sit down at their tables.
It really made the entire experience memorable and not in a good way.
Don’t waste your time on this, go have a nice day in Uluwatu or around there instead

Instagram and TikTok have majorly overrated this island. There are some nice picture points on this island, Kelingking and Broken beach are stunning, but this island is hugely overrated!
Firstly the island is covered in garbage, so the island is infested with flies, you’ll be hard pressed to find a restaurant/cafe that isn’t filled with hundreds of flies buzzing around constantly. 90% of your time here you’ll spend swatting away flies.
Yes some of the views are pretty spectacular, but they’re all very far away from each other as the island is quite big, and any road off of the very few main ones, are absolutely awful. Not even just potholes, they’re gravely and full of massive dips and rocks, really quite dangerous on a scooter.
Your only choice of transport around the island are expensive taxis or scooters, so if you do stay, save yourself some money and just stay by the harbour. Everything from the harbour is about the same time away, and there are plenty of restaurants around.
The few views there are, are crammed full of tourists, so unless you visit places early (you can only do that with one or two if you’ve got a packed day!!) you’ll just be fighting to get a picture that isn’t packed full of other tourists.
Crystal bay isn’t even worth visiting in my opinion, the beach isn’t nice, it’s packed full of tourists, there are lots of dogs running around, and the sea is quite rough.
They’ll charge you 5,000idr to park at all of these spots too.
The beaches on the North west of the island are a lot less crammed and are calm and beautiful!
As with most of the other places in Bali, watch out for the dogs! Most are okay during the day, but they get very territorial and aggressive at night, so unless you’re on the Main Street, please don’t walk anywhere! It’s not worth the risk of being attacked.
The hotels here are all 3 star or below, even the pricier ones still aren’t great, and it’s definitely not worth the money to stay here!
Book a day tour here from Bali, you’ll be able to cover all of the main sights on the West coast (unless maybe you wanted to spend all of your day on Kelingking beach if you’re brave enough to venture down!), it’s not worth the stay!

We went on a full day tour of Nusa Penida with Dream Journey Bali, which included 1/2 day of snorkelling and 1/2 day trip around the island. It was a 12 hour day and most of the morning was spent standing around waiting. We were picked up at 7am and sat around for an hour and 1/2 before we actually got on the boat to go to the island. Then after a 40 min boat ride we sat around for another 2 hours before we actually got to go snorkelling. In total we spent about 30mins in the water. We got back to the docks and waited yet again for another hour and a bit, then we were put into a van and the driver drove like a mad man to our lunch destination which every other tour company on the island was at the same restaurant so it was a S@#$ show !!!!!! We finally got back into the van and got to our first island destination at 3pm. We had 4 places to visit and had to be back at the docks by 5pm so we didn't miss the last ferry back. Needless to say it was VERY rushed.
This island could and should be as beautiful as all the pictures but its not, there is rubbish everywhere all over the island, and unfortunately it has been turned a literal tip !!!!
