Inside the Montesarchio castle, it summarizes the thousand-year history of the place and its symbolic centres: Caudium (Montesarchio), Saticula (Sant'Agata de' Goti), Telesia (San Salvatore Telesino). Excursus from prehistory to the first centuries BC with a large section dedicated to necropolis finds and especially vases (craters). The most significant ones find a unitary location inside what were once the cells of the Bourbon prison in a private and interactive environment. Guided voice and direct video projections on the painted subjects enhance the details, disseminating their myth and history. Well kept, it deserves many more visitors. One of those hidden treasures, a place of culture, which has nothing to envy of more famous national museums.

We fell upon this museum unexpectedly as we visited the castle and the beautiful views. This museum is a gem and worth visiting when travelling to or through Montesarchio. Although our guide spoke only Italian, our son was able to translate a bit for us and we learned about the significance of the area and the ancient artifacts. For such an ancient structure, the museum is modern and offers different forms of media to enjoy the experience. Loved it!

This is just across the parking lot from the Castello. Admission is free and they would not even accept a donation. Well worth the visit and the guard was more than helpful to us, even though he spoke no English and we spoke very little Italian. A very nice collection is a beautiful setting.

This castle used to be an orphanage run by nuns. I went to this orphanage as a child. I left in 1973. This is now a museum, which I visited for the first time since I left, I expected some sort of history about the castle itself, there was none, no mention or sigh that this was ever an orphanage, or what it was used as prior. Everything is in Italian, considering that they are trying to attract tourists, no translation in any other language is offered.
I will not be visiting again, as I would rather remember it as it was.

The National Archaeological Museum of Sannio Caudino is located in the local castle, used by the Bourbons as a state prison, with opening hours 9-19. In the section dedicated to vases, mostly figurative craters of Attic and Italiot production, "The Rape of Europe" stands out, with red figures, better known as the "Vase of Assteas" (famous Greek ceramist) of 340 BC, exhumed from a necropolis in Sant'Agata de' Goti. Stolen and exhibited at the Getty Museum in Malibú from 1981 to 2005, it is referred to as the "most beautiful vase in the world" for its fine workmanship, realistic style and accurate details in the representation of mythological figures and characters. The state of preservation is perfect; the colors, strokes and representations are vivid, as in the time it was made, making the goblet crater a unique piece. Before being permanently placed, since 2013, at this Museum, it was housed in prestigious venues, such as the Quirinale and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
The presence of "other unique finds" make the visit even more interesting such as: Pleistocene finds (millstones), Neolithic stone tools (flint arrowheads), the marble sphinx, very small oinochoe, the askos of the Lord of animals, the apotropaic eyed cups (kylikes) of the Samnite period.
The adjoining watchtower is of Lombard foundation on foundations of pre-Roman times, then enlarged by the Normans, reinforced by the Angevins and fortified by the Aragonese.
The cost of the ticket for the whole complex is 5€. There is no problem for free parking.

A wonderful and well-kept castle, rich in history. You will find the "Europa vase", the most beautiful in the world, the red-figure craters, the burials, the cells and the various visual explanations. A journey into history. Not to be missed.

Ciao.
