If you stay in Ancona in summer or autumn and the temperature of the sea is still nice, you really have to go to Portonovo to the beach. I liked it much more than typical tourist beaches like in Rimini and so on, as here, it's mostly locals who enjoy the beach. You can easily get there by public bus, but mind the departure times back, if you miss the last bus back to Ancona, it might get a bit difficult.…

The delightful natural setting of Portonovo is ruined by crass low grade commercial development and noise. On a summer afternoon or evening expect to be blasted out by rival sources of noise from different sides of the beach. Portonovo is a paradise for cars with vehicles encountered round every twist and turn of the byways behind the beach. The boat houses and fishermen’s huts behind the beach are faded and peeling, making the place look like an abandoned industrial zone. The cuisine in the better known restaurants is as expected, though all the fuss about mussels is hard to understand if you have spent any time in Brussels. Overall, the natural splendour of the site is overshadowed by tasteless and intrusive human development.…
