About
The Purangi Winery was established in 1985 the 37th Winery in New Zealand. The Evans Family who moved from Hong Kong were welcomed as settlers by the district in 1966. Our products are made in the traditional manner with purest ingredients hence the company name Purangi Estate Ltd or "PurEst". In 2009 we built a wood fired pizza oven and launched the Purangi Winery Pizzeria which has been more and more popular. We produce many of the ingredients for the pizzas, making the pesto and pizza sauce and using a wide range of fresh herbs and vegetables from our garden. Our bar in the Coromandel invites you to enjoy all our homemade products: Cider, Wines, Long Drinks and (in winter) Mulled Wine as well as a wide range of national and international beers. Relax in our family friendly environment. WE ARE IN THE PROGRESS OF RELOCATING AND ARE NOT OPEN UNTILE FURTHER NOTICE!

- Janice R1 contributionGo here! Fantastic! If I could give this place ten stars, I would. So far one of the best places I’ve been to. It’s not the typical winery where you get three glasses of wine and left to your own devices. You get a little bit of everything, and Danny explains it all. Definite must see.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 9, 2023
- vagabondodelmondo205 contributionsDefinitely stop hereWe had a great experience here. It was fascinating to taste the many varieties of fruit wines and liqueurs, including lemon gin and persimmon wine. The proprietor is entertaining and full of interesting facts and stories about the area. Top it off with an amazing view of the most beautiful valley and bay imaginable! According to the proprietor, the winery moved up to this hillside location (right off the main highway) recently. So the cleverly reused shipping containers repurposed as the winery's business are a bit ramshackle, but don't let this put you off. The wines and spirits are delicious.Visited May 2022Written May 16, 2022
- Allan P1 contributionWorth the visitCalled in with friends recently, what a find. Very rustic and first thoughts were, are you sure its still operating. Met by owner and the interesting banter commenced. Learned quite a bit of the local history as well as tasting some very interesting tipples. Well worth a visit.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 6, 2023
- Martin B5 contributionsOne of the highlights of our trip to New ZealandWe stumbled onto this place while exploring the Coromandel last summer. On reflection, it was one of the highlights of our trip. The owner has a running stream of banter that has to be heard to be believed. He could have missed his calling as a stand up comedian or commentator. He has a razor sharp wit and a true "gift of gab". They had a very interesting and eclectic collection of wines and liquors. I was particularly fond of the lemon gin and dearly wish there was a way I could get more of it here in the USA. I've been hoarding the bottle I brought back and it's almost gone. The pizza was excellent and we sat out on the grass under a Kiwi bush to eat it. It was a very authentic and unpretentious place. I wish there were many more places like this and less of the snooty wineries that seem to be the norm.Visited February 2016Traveled with familyWritten July 2, 2016
- Rob CWellington, New Zealand56 contributionsGreat pizza, lovely peopleI got a bit lost late at night looking for somewhere to eat and happened upon the Purangi Winery. It was ten minutes after kitchen closing but they were happy to make me a fresh pizza, with herbs picked fresh from the garden outside. They even brought me a sample glass of cider to try while I was waiting! Great pizza, lovely people.Visited February 2015Traveled soloWritten February 17, 2015

- nowgraham5 contributionsMagical findLooking for a light lunch and maybe a tasting after our hike to Cathdral Cove we stumbled on this little beauty. We weren't sure if it was open as there seemed to be a bit of action with trailers and utes. Luckily we forged ahead and were welcomed with the offer to taste a range of fruit liqueurs, wine, cider and spirits. The owner was in the middle of relocating the business up the road and the place was a hive of activity. He made time to tell us about his unique products and listened to our travel tales. The inviting smell of the wood fired pizza oven proved too great and we tucked in to a truly tasty pizza in a delightful and quirky garden setting. We soaked up the early may sunshine and the delicious cider - sitting here writing this review I regret not adding a bottle or two to my take away order. I well recommend this great little place and hope we can find it in its relocation when we return.Visited May 2017Traveled as a coupleWritten April 30, 2017
- BagginsWhixall13 contributionsFabulous place, wonderful welcomePopped in here early evening (on a very very wet day!! - a month's rainfall in one day) for a quick glass of kiwi fruit wine .... wrong time of year for it but the owner couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. We ended up being invited into the 'tasting bar' and tried a range of wines, liqueurs and spirits, on our very own 'tour' .... all this with good humour, much information, and despite being busy with pizza making and many other guests. Definitely recommend the passion fruit and feijoia liqueurs - our little taste of NZ back in Blighty. Thank you for making our final evening in NZ a particularly memorable one. Hope to be back ....Visited April 2017Traveled as a coupleWritten April 29, 2017
- Royce A6 contributionsHighlight of the area!!Can't say enough good things for Danny and the crew and the awesome range of liquors, wine, and food they serve up. Danny greets you with a 'show' about the history of feijoas that will surprise you and is awesome for a laugh. The pizzas and squid are delicious and the cidar and liquors have a great fresh taste of feijoa. Relaxed atmosphere is welcoming. Bonus that they offer freedom camping, the only place I've found in coromandel to allow it, so you can spend that money on drinks instead!!Visited November 2016Traveled with friendsWritten November 26, 2016

As a lot of travellers I think, we were looking for a free camping. And finally was the best experience we had in the Coromandel. We had a free testing and delicious pizza. We left with a bottle of feijoa liquor to offer to some friends in Auckland. They loved it!!

Stumbled across this place at night - we were all hungry as. The host looked after us very well and has some great yarns. The best oven baked pizzas, and the feijoa liquor tasting a real treat. This place has its own individual vibe. A must visit place if you are in the area. A memorable experience!
