From the moment we walked in we were made to feel welcome at this winery and restaurant. The restaurant only offers a 4 course ($85) or 6 course ($130) degustation. This can be paired with wines ($40,$50 or $100 depends on the quality). We had the 4 course menu with the $50 wines and they were excellent. The food was delicious for every course and while each was a complex set of ingredients and really well presented you didn’t feel overwhelmed by it all. Overall it was a great experience across nearly 3 hours which we would highly recommend.

My husband and I visited here recently. The winery has a lovely outlook and is the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine admiring the views. They also provide picnic rugs for free which is a nice touch. They have a good selection of wines and the wine tastings are free even though we bought a few bottles. They offer a great selection of generous sized platters, i.e. a cheese platter, charcuterie platter and a vegetarian platter. We ordered the charcuterie platter which had a good selection of meats, dips, smoked salmon, bread and pickled vegetables. I also asked if they could add some pumpkin frittata which they very kindly provided. It was a great afternoon, nice wine and food. We really enjoyed the ambience.

Well worth a visit if you are venturing into the Adelaide Hills. Stunning views and wine to match. We arranged a picnic lunch after tasting their selection of wines and selecting the Rose to go with our platter for two. Picnic blankets are provided and we found a shady spot on the lawn to eat, drink and enjoy the view. The restaurant looked popular but unfortunately can’t comment.

The occasion was a very special celebration of my graduation with family. This was the first time we have been able to gather the family under one roof to celebrate any of my graduations, in fact this is the first graduation celebration any family have been able to attend. This event was a big deal to us.

Upon our arrival we were told to go and park our car outside the winery due to a wedding scheduled that evening - we were there for the first lunch seating at 12.

We trudged up the muddy path to the restaurant - approx 1 long block of unsealed road - luckily I didn't wear heels.

We entered the restaurant and were ignored by 3 staff before anyone acknowledged our existence.

We were given the worst table next to the bar and the toilets - clear as a party of 6 we weren't important enough to warrant a decent table.

When the parking situation was mentioned to the staff were were rudely informed that they were a wedding venue - an basically tough luck.

The food was VERY dissapointing. The menu was inferior to what they had published on the net -crab instead of lobster and the amounts were tiny - we filled up on bread. The final course - beef cheek gnocchi was Fasta Pasta level and in no way fine dining.

There were no desserts - we were told that their supplier had had an accident so therefore there was no dessert for day.

The staff were young and inexperienced and clearly could not handle the pressure of a full restaurant and setting up for an event.

Overall it was a disaster for us. We were made to feel like second class patrons and I pity the people who are having their wedding there tonight - if they can't get the food right for a set degustation tasting menu I can only imagine that the food for the wedding will be very average indeed.

Very disappointed and as a local who was considering having future celebrations and occasions there I can say we will definately not be back.

A pretty ordinary dining experience to be honest. We had booked for our annual staff Christmas lunch and had selected the 5 course, 2 hour option as opposed to the 9 course, 4 hour option. We booked for 5 people and when we arrived, the table was set for 6. No big deal but a sign of things to come.

After having been shown to our table, we sat and another staff member came past and dropped a few menus on the table, no explanation. The menu listed our 5 courses and the suggested wine pairings...simple enough and reassuring that this seemed to indicate they were on top of things.

After ordering a bottle of bubbles (it was the first suggested wine pairing), a staff member proceeded to bring out a bottle and five glasses, place them in the middle of the table and walk off. I suppose we will pour ourselves? Now, this is a winery restaurant where you'd expect the wine to be celebrated. Not so. This also happened with every subsequent bottle we ordered throughout the day.

Over the to food....our starters of bread, olives and what we assumed was hummus was brought out and dumped on the table. We asked a passing staffer what we were about to eat. He informed us it was their house made hummus (another thing worth celebrating). Bread, olives and hummus, tasty enough.

On to the real issues with the food...after starters were cleared we went back to the wine list and ordered the 2nd suggested pairing. Imagine our confusion when 5 minutes later, the 3rd course of food as listed on the menu was brought to the table (again no explanation of what it was, which was made worse as it was warm and we weren't told so it went cold). A minute later, the 2nd food course was also brought to the table. Both courses were on large platters designed for sharing, not individual plates. This was now a sharing menu not a degustation.

What made this overly difficult was now we had 2 plates of food in front of us, making it near on impossible to follow the suggested wine pairings (as listed on the menu). Unfortunately, the food wasn't superb but more like food you'd expect at an average pub. The chicken/mushroom stew was particularly ordinary as it was cold by the time we got to it (we ate the food in the order listed on the menu, silly us).

Back to ordering wine...what to do. Trust that the main courses will come out one by one or order a wine that suits both. We put our trust in the restaurant and ordered wine number 4. Low and behold, 2 platters of main courses (beef and lamb) arrived at the table. Silly us again.

By this stage, we had decided to make comment to management who told us the menu is always supposed to be a sharing experience and the wine pairings are merely a suggestion, even though they are impossible to execute. It would be like a vegetarian restaurant suggest the beef dish. Nice try, but no dice.

On to dessert, pavlova. Again, 2 platters of pav arrived and were enjoyed by the table. The highlight dish of the day.

We left Bird in Hand disappointed by the service, the food and the lack of attention paid to the wine (they are a winery after all). Most of all, we felt duped by the way the menu and experience is promoted and ultimately delivered. Had it been described as a sharing menu and the wine pairings left off the menu, but rather explained by attentive, knowledgeable staff, we would have enjoyed an experience that much more closely matched to what was sold.

As a venue that you need to travel to, there are many better throughout SA and in the Adelaide Hills. A shame because the setting is beautiful and some of the wines are terrific.

Hi Daniel, We are disappointed that your expectations were not met on your visit to our restaurant. It seems, we missed the mark with the delivery of our menu and execution of service on the day, as our menu is in fact a Food Flight, that is served in a Shared Style and our wines are listed as a recommendation on the menu only. Thank you for your comments, and the opportunity to respond and we will definitely share this among the team and endeavour to provide excellence for every visitor. We do hope to see you again soon to enjoy our beautiful setting and terrific wines. Warm regards The team at Bird in Hand

Rang and booked for a bus load of people to attend the winery & was told to leave when came with a bus load of people for a 30th celebration after approximately an hour the apparent “owner” approached and told us to leave after telling our group that we were “not the people she wanted here” as we ate our own packet of chips on a grass area on the property; after being denied food service. our group of people spent more then enough on there wine and just came to celebrate a special event, have been to many wineries in the Adelaide hills & never been treated this way, have always worked in customer service & hospitality in the past and it’s actually surprising there is businesses and people out there that think they can treat people & discriminate this way. I will never recommend this place to anyone.

Went to Bird in Hand as part of our weekend getaway drive through the hills. Beautiful setting overlooking the country side. Met with a young lady who shared with us some history of the farm and then went through a great selection of wines. The 2 things about the visit and my purchase I feel are important - Firstly I never felt pressured to purchase any of the wines (this has been the case with other wineries I have visited) and then after purchasing the wine and having it sent home to Melbourne 2 bottles were damaged in the shipment. I sent an email and they have replaced the 2 bottles for me. Now that is service that you don't get too often.
Keep up the great wine and service.

Had a wonderful experience at this winery. The staff member who provided us with the samples was attentive and very informative. She was happy to answer questions and was chatty and friendly. The inside of the building is very rustic and it was pleasant to look around. The outdoor setting is beautiful and it is worth paying a visit to the toilets - beautifully outfitted. There is plenty of parking. We visited it as part of a tour and it is a great place to visit.

Gave it the benefit of the doubt after having an almost comical experience (in a bad way) on our first visit when we arrived early for a friends wedding and where keen to try some of the highly talked about "Bird in Hand" wines only to be told that if you where here for the wedding you couldn't taste any. Lol, right, confirm this is a cellar door ? Is my money no good (provided your Wine was up to the hype) because I am attending a wedding ?
I should point out it is not the staff but the manager who confronted us with this news. She fails to where a name tag, probably at fear or public retribution due her terrible customer service.
We just yesterday went on a Sunday Winery tour with some friends and against better judgement put "Bird in Hand" on our itinerary again. And again, where extremely disappointed due the exact same women with the exact same attitude and agenda. Her manner and demeanor actually stopped 5 people in the group from making the purchases they had planned, just to out of principle. We made the compliant to her in person and were then privileged to some more of her delightful "this is how it is here, if you don't like it leave" as well as the snide comment again as we promptly took her advice. The catalyst for all of this was we had a group booking for 10 (which she doesn't like either apparently, gee sorry) and after trying 5 of the nice, but less desirable wines we were told the tasting was over. We then went to the cellar door and simply wanted to try the Chardonnay, Merlot and the Fortified Merlot (which is not an issue so long as you don't have a group booking and obviously not part of the group tasting) as I had heard good things and was keen to purchase accordingly. This was obviously denied and when all the fun and games began.
After all your suggestions for us perhaps I can give you one. Adjust the attitude or get out of customer service !
Perhaps after the success of "Bird in Hand Winery" the "corporate" manner out ways the "personnel" ? Such a shame.
As you can see from other reviews on here this is obviously not an isolated incident (which I can certainly attest to after having experienced it twice in the last two, and final, visits)
I would just like to point out this is not aimed at the staff who were friendly and as you would except of a beautiful winery on a Sunday. They did actually try to help us out with the tasting but had their hands tied by the manager. Visually beautiful place and apparently nice wines, but never again for this group of ten !!
