The car park is on the hillside overlooking the village and is subject to Northumberland County Council charges which at the time of our visit were £2.80 for 1 hour; £5.00 for 2 hours, £6.50 for 3 hours and £9.00 for up to 24 hours. People were parking by the roadside a little further back to avoid the charges.
It’s a reasonably steep paved hill downwards, and a bit steeper coming back up!
The village seems to consist of a green surrounded by little cottages and a quaint pub, The Ship Inn, and beyond here there is easy access to the beach.
The beach is sandy and was very exposed to the wind on the day we visited making it an unlikely spot to be sunbathing (possibly in common with many Northumbrian beaches). It stretches for miles continuously right along to Embleton Bay and Dunstanburgh Castle ruins which are worth a visit. There is access near the golf club at Dunstan Steads if you wish to get a bit closer to the castle and park for free.
Mindful of the parking charges here we only took a short stroll on this occasion prior to heading back to the village for a quick look inside the pub. No time for refreshments with the meter running but it looked quaint and was very busy. They seemed to have organized some live music which was a surprise for such a small, remote location.
If you can avoid the parking charges it’s another lengthy sandy beach similar to others in the area.

I understand pubs have had it tough on lockdown but £7.50 for a dry pie served outside. ITS GREED! A pie in a cardboard box 📦. Sorry that’s just not on and if the menu was clearer I wouldn’t have purchased the food.

Low Newton at the north end of Embleton bay has its own sheltered area: sheltered by its own cove like space and by the higher land on the northern flank of the cove. The sand is soft and clean and the water is relatively fresh form rocks but it is an area for the mooring fo a few small leisure craft. Behind the beach the lovely square of ex-fishermen's cottages are neatly lined up (mostly NT holiday lets now) around the very excellent Ship Inn. There are public toilets at the back of the square of cottages but parking is farther afield at Upper Newton or (with a walk of a t least a mile) at the Embleton Gold club area.

We were really looking forward to visiting this beach. However, the car park (which was virtually empty) was prohibitively expensive - over £11 for a few hours! This is beyond reasonable - paying that would leave no money to spend in the village. We drove in, saw the price and drove off.

The Ship Inn is a tremendous pub where you will get a warm welcome and enjoy some first class food and drink.
They have set themselves up brilliantly to cope with current restrictions (best seen) which makes you feel safe but takes nothing away from the atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

This was a lovely place for an early walk. Parked up easily, toilets available. Accidentally discovered a nature/bird reserve which was lovely. The hides were locked due to Covid which was a shame but managed to peep through the fence at reservoir.
No snacks or drinks available until 11am.

Thursday 26 August 2021, my husband and I went to visit the coastal village of Low Newton By The Sea, which is owned by The National Trust and is notable for the diversity of birds that can be observed in the area.
We spent time walking along the beach, which was very bracing and very refreshing. This is a lovely place to come if you want a bracing walk, or just walk at any time of the year.

We have visited most if not all of the beaches in Northumberland & this is definitely up there with the very best.
We parked in the free parking when you first enter the village with a 20 min walk then to the beach.
It is a stunning expansive beach & is a must visit.

Park in High Newton, or on the roadside and save charges. The beach is sandy and exquisite and you can walk along the coast path for miles with wonderful views.
The little village square is gorgeous, though there's nothing really to tell you anything about it. The Ship Inn does food (we didn't try) and great local ales. For food you take pot luck at lunch but have to book days in advance for evening.
Definitely worth a detour. .

A beautiful little place with a golden sandy beach and quaint little green served by the Ship pub.
Be warned small car park which fills quickly so park on the verge and have a little walk if it’s full. Well worth a visit. Oh and the toilets are sadly lacking otherwise it would be 5 star!
